Today he is the chairman of Go Ahead!, an aid and development organisation that helps children in South Africa where he also lives. Jan says the early experiences in Africa had a big influence on his character and career plans.

Originally it was his father’s dream. His dad had always wanted to travel from Cape Town in South Africa to Nairobi in Kenya. So one day in 1994, Mr Bildhauer shipped a car to Cape Town, and the family – Jan, his younger brother and their parents – made their dreams come true. In the following years they returned to Africa five times, staying for four to eight weeks on the continent.
