Burgers or bananas?

At the beginning of the school year 2006/2007 things started changing at British schools:

School canteens no longer offer cheap bangers* or burgers, and vending machines have to sell healthier options instead of crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks.

This is a result of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s campaign against “junk food”.

His statistics show that 15.5% of children under 11 in Great Britain are now obese and their number is growing very fast.

Jamie Oliver argued that bad eating habits cause diseases that could make the current generation to be the first to die before its parents.

His message had the British worried. So over 270,000 people signed an on-line petition that supports J. Oliver's “Feed me better” campaign for healthier food.

Finally school food became a political topic.

Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Labour Party introduced nutritional standards for school meals.

Now every school has to offer fruit like apples, oranges and bananas and a variety of tea, juice and yoghurt drinks with less than 5% of sugar. Chewing gum, toffees, all chocolate products, snacks and meats high in fat are banned from school canteens.

Students can have, for example, bread products like bagels, freshly made cakes, dried fruit, yoghurt and unsalted popcorn.

But how to convince a “fast food junkie” of eating more food made from fresh ingredients?

So Jamie Oliver created his reality show “Jamie’s School Dinners”. There he teaches British kids and their parents how to make healthy soups and salads. He uses fresh vegetables and fruit that are unknown to many people.

Even many school chefs and the so-called “dinner ladies”, can learn a lot about basic cooking skills in Jamie's programme.

It is a hard learning process for everybody, but it’s a first positive step into a healthy future for the kids. (Adapted from www.commercialexploitation.org)

School dinners around the world

In my country,Taiwan, the children under 12 have lunch at school. Some schools have big kitchens and there are several cooks to prepare the food. Usually there is rice, two kinds of vegetables, meat and a bowl of soup. You can eat like you would eat at your home. The pupils pay money every month.
