A g r o u p o f s c u l p t u r e d f i g u r e s and r e l i e f s d a t i n g from the M i d d l e Ages and c l o s e l y r e l a t e d t o one o f the most i n t r i g u i n g l e g e n d s o f Regensburg, t h a t o f the D o l l i n g e r Saga, has g i v e n r i s e t o more t h a n one u n s o l v e d m y s t e r y . The group p o r t r a y s a k i n g and a j o u s t , b o t h o f them c o n n e c t e d w i t h the t a l e o f a townsman who f o u g h t a pagan k n i g h t f o r h i s K i n g ; but i t a l s o i n c l u d e s an enigma, i n the f i g u r e o f an E n g l i s h s a i n t , H o l y Oswald, k i n g and m a r t y r , who d i e d f o r h i s f a i t h as e a r l y as t h e s e v e n t h c e n t u r y i n N o r t h u m b r i a ,

I t has been c l a i m e d t h a t the Oswald f i g u r e has l i t t l e , i f a n y t h i n g , t o do w i t h the group, ^ and the i n s c r i p t i o n s under

2 t h e s t a t u e s do not p r o v i d e much h e l p f u l i n f o r m a t i o n . The t h i r t e e n t h - c e n t u r y donor may s i m p l y have i n t e n d e d t o honour h i s p a t r o n s a i n t by a d d i n g him t o t h e group, b u t t h i s i s mere c o n j e c t u r e . The s u g g e s t i o n t h a t the l e g e n d a r y b a t t l e took p l a c e on the S a i n t ' s F e a s t Day, t h e f i f t h o f A u g u s t , i s no better."^ Both assumptions are e q u a l l y u n s a t i s f a c t o r y as an e x p l a n a t i o n of the i n c l u s i o n o f S t . Oswald i n the g r o u p . The s o l u t i o n i s f a r more t o be sought i n t h e l e g e n d and a t t r i b u t e s o f t h e S a i n t h i m s e l f ; i t i s t h e y w h i c h e x p l a i n the c e n t r a l f u n c t i o n o f the Oswald s t a t u e and the i n t e r d e p e n d e n c e o f t h e f i g u r e s i n the ensemble.

The f a c t t h a t the m a n u s c r i p t c o n t a i n s o n l y t h o s e passages w h i c h d e a l d i r e c t l y w i t h the l i f e o f t h e S a i n t i s a c l e a r i n - d i c a t i o n t h a t t h e w r i t e r was e x c l u s i v e l y i n t e r e s t e d i n St.Os- w a l d . P e r h a p s Regensburg was, even a t t h a t t i m e , the c e n t r e o f a f l o u r i s h i n g p o p u l a r c u l t . ^ How and when the l a t t e r was b r o u g h t t h e r e , however, remains a m a t t e r f o r c o n j e c t u r e . Sev- e r a l s u g g e s t i o n s have been made i n t h i s r e s p e c t :

1. T h a t t h e c u l t was b r o u g h t t o E c h t e r n a c h b y W i l l i b r o r d , whence i t s p r e a d v i a t h e R h i n e a r e a t o F r a n c o n i a a n d B a v a r i a ;1^

2. T h a t t h e c u l t was b r o u g h t t o R e g e n s b u r g b y way o f F u l d a , p o s s i b l y d u r i n g t h e t i m e o f B o n i f a c e , a n d t h a t t h e B e n e d i c t i n e s w e r e i n -

3. T h a t t h e c u l t was b r o u g h t t o W e s t p h a l i a b y t h e G u e l p h n o b i l i t y i n t h e t w e l f t h c e n t u r y a n d m o v e d f r o m t h e r e t o R e g e n s b u r g a n d S o u t h e r n B a v a r i a ;

4. T h a t t h e c u l t was p r o p a g a t e d b y S c o t t i s h monks, m o r e l ^ a n l i k e l y b y t h o s e o f t h e M o n a s t e r y o f S t . J a m e s i n R e g e n s b u r g .

W h i l e many p o s s i b l e s o l u t i o n s t o t h i s p r o b l e m have been t a k e n i n t o c o n s i d e r a t i o n , the f a r more i m p o r t a n t q u e s t i o n of t h e u n d e r l y i n g p r i n c i p l e b e h i n d t h e d i s s e m i n a t i o n of the c u l t o f S t . Oswald t o the C o n t i n e n t , and o f t h e r e a s o n f o r i t s e a r l y p o p u l a r i t y , has h e r e t o f o r e been o v e r l o o k e d . From the s e v e n t h t o t h e t e n t h c e n t u r y , E n g l a n d and the C o n t i n e n t were swept by a wave o f v e n e r a t i o n f o r the Holy C r o s s . I g n i t e d , no d o u b t , by the r e s t o r a t i o n of the T r u e C r o s s t o Jerusalem by H e r a c l i u s i n the s e v e n t h c e n t u r y , and the d i s c o v e r y of a fragment o f t h e C r o s s i n S t . P e t e r ' s i n Rome a t the b e g i n -

n i n g o f t h e e i g h t h , the c u l t of the C r o s s no doubt d i d much t o a i d t h e growth o f t h e l e g e n d of S t . Oswald.

In e a r l y E n g l a n d he was b e s t known as the N o r t h u m b r i a n champion o f the c r o s s , f o r w i t h h i s b a r e hands he e r e c t e d a wooden c r o s s on the s i t e o f an a p p r o a c h i n g b a t t l e and then k n e l t t o p r a y w i t h h i s army, b e f o r e g o i n g on t o d e f e a t t h e

pagan h o s t . A c c o r d i n g t o l e g e n d , t h a t was t h e f i r s t o f t h o u - sands o f wooden and s t o n e c r o s s e s t o be e r e c t e d i n Northum- b r i a , and the deed was c o n n e c t e d t h e m a t i c a l l y w i t h the l e g - ends o f C o n s t a n t i n e (who l i k e w i s e c a r r i e d the s i g n o f the c r o s s as h i s b a t t l e s t a n d a r d ) ana o f h i s mother H e l e n (who was t h o u g h t t o have d i s c o v e r e d t h e remains o f the True C r o s s i n J e r u s a l e m ) . The s u b j e c t gave r i s e t o an abundance o f poe- t r y and p r o s e , p a r t i c u l a r l y i n A n g l o - S a x o n , and the F e a s t o f the I n v e n t i o n o f the C r o s s was e l e v a t e d t o one o f the h i g h e s t i n t h e e a r l y c h u r c h .1 7 A l c u i n , who d i d much t o shape t h e l i t - urgy o f t h e F r a n k i s h C h u r c h , i n c l u d i n g t h e i n s t i t u t i o n o f F e a s t Days and t h e i r r i t u a l , was p r o b a b l y g i v e n a fragment of t h e T r u e C r o s s i n c o m p l i a n c e w i t h h i s r e q u e s t o f 796. But i t i s l i t t l e known t h a t he a l s o composed a hymn i n p r a i s e o f

Oswald, and t h a t A d a l w i n , the B i s h o p o f Regensburg, s p e n t 1 9

s e v e r a l months w i t h him i n the s p r i n g o f 801. T h i s c o u l d , of c o u r s e , be one o f t h e f i r s t i n s t a n c e s o f d i r e c t c o n t a c t between Regensburg and t h e c u l t o f S t . Oswald, and the e a r - l i e s t Regensburg c h u r c h c a l e n d a r does c o n t a i n t h e F e a s t Day o f t h e S a i n t .2 0 But i t s u f f i c e s t o say t h a t t h e c u l t u r a l and r e l i g i o u s t i e s between e a r l y E n g l a n d and the C o n t i n e n t were so m a n i f o l d t h a t they r e s u l t e d i n a w i d e s p r e a d and i n t e n s i v e v e n e r a t i o n o f t h e S a i n t i n B a v a r i a , the A l p s , and even as f a r as V i e n n a .2 1

A c c o r d i n g t o t h e o r i g i n a l l e g e n d , Oswald was the k i n g o f t h e N o r t h u m b r i a n s . Due t o a d v e r s e c i r c u m s t a n c e s he was f o r c e d t o f l e e , f o r a t i m e , t o I r e l a n d , where he was c o n v e r t e d t o C h r i s t i a n i t y . He became a f o l l o w e r o f S t . Columba and opened t h e way f o r I r i s h m i s s i o n a r y a c t i v i t y i n n o r t h e r n E n g l a n d , where he i s c r e d i t e d w i t h h a v i n g c o n v e r t e d h i s e n t i r e r e a l m

t o the f a i t h . The c r o s s he e r e c t e d g a i n e d a r e p u t a t i o n f o r i t s m i r a c u l o u s h e a l i n g p r o p e r t i e s , and f r a g m e n t s were r e v e r e d as r e l i c s . Oswald became a symbol o f the C h r i s t i a n k i n g , and o f the vanquishment o f pagans t h r o u g h t h e Crux i n v i c t a , t h e v i c t o r i o u s s i g n o f the C r o s s . L a t e r Oswald l i v e d a model

l i f e , becoming famous f o r h i s s e l f - a b n e g a t i o n and g e n e r o s - i t y t o t h e p o o r . He founded the famous L i n d i s f a r n e Monas- t e r y and e n t r u s t e d h i s f r i e n d A i d a n w i t h i t s d i r e c t i o n . One o f the m a j o r l e g e n d s i s t h a t o f the E a s t e r D i n n e r , when Os- w a l d was approached by b e g g a r s and commanded h i s s e r v a n t s t o g i v e them not o n l y the f o o d from h i s t a b l e , but the s i l -

v e r d i s h on which i t was s e r v e d as w e l l . The f i r s t known v i t a of S t . Oswald's i s found i n Bede's H i s t o r i a E c c l e s i -

23 astioa, but t h e r e are l a t e r E n g l i s h v e r s i o n s as w e l l . T h a t o f the monk R e g i n a l d (1165) has e m b r o i d e r e d the l e g - end t o i n c l u d e e l e m e n t s t h a t p l a y an i m p o r t a n t p a r t i n Ger- man p o p u l a r v e r s i o n s of the l a t e r M i d d l e Ages (a r o y a l b r i d e ,

a w i l y r a v e n ) . C o n t i n e n t a l v e r s i o n s o f the l e g e n d t e n d t o n e g l e c t the r o l e o f the c r o s s i n the Oswald c u l t , and con- c e n t r a t e on o t h e r elements i n s t e a d .

F a r more i n t r i g u i n g i s t h e way i n which the f i g u r e o f the S a i n t i s p o r t r a y e d i n Regensburg, and the t r a n s f o r m a t i o n w h i c h l i t e r a r y t r e a t m e n t and the c h a n g i n g a t t i t u d e s o f a new age b r i n g a b o u t . The e a r l i e s t i c o n o g r a p h i c r e p r e s e n t a - t i o n s o f S t . Oswald i n B a v a r i a - more t h a n one of them i n Regensburg - have p r o v i d e d v a l u a b l e c l u e s as t o the popu- l a r i z a t i o n o f the l e g e n d , t h e metamorphosis o f the k i n g and m a r t y r i n t o a B a v a r i a n i z e d g u a r d i a n s a i n t o f townspeople

and f a r m e r s , and the r i s e o f a c o m p l e t e l y new v e r s i o n i n t h e form o f the M i n s t r e l ' s T a l e {Spielmannsepos) .

S e v e r a l monuments t e s t i f y t o the p o p u l a r i t y of the Os- wald c u l t i n Regensburg d u r i n g the t h i r t e e n t h and f o u r - t e e n t h c e n t u r i e s . Among o t h e r s , t h e r e a r e the l a r g e s t a i n e d - g l a s s window i n t h e s o u t h e r n nave o f t h e C a t h e d r a l , d a t e d

V a r i o u s f a c e t s o f t h e o r i g i n a l l e g e n d are p r e s e r v e d i n the i c o n o g r a p h y o f t h e S a i n t as seen i n Regensburg. In E n g - l a n d , t h e Oswald f i g u r e g e n e r a l l y h e l d a s c e p t r e i n t h e one hand, s y m b o l i z i n g h i s s t a t u s as s a i n t l y k i n g ; and a c r o s s i n t h e o t h e r , s y m b o l i z i n g h i s r o l e as p r o p o n e n t o f the c r o s s i n E n g l a n d and v i c t o r o v e r t h e h e a t h e n i n the S i g n of t h e C r o s s . Sometimes, however, a h i g h , c o v e r e d d i s h , o f t e n r e - f e r r e d t o as a c i b o r i u m o r p y x i s - l i k e c o n t a i n e r , was sub- s t i t u t e d f o r the c r o s s t o s y m b o l i z e the s i l v e r d i s h he had

cut up and d i s t r i b u t e d t o the p o o r . In Regensburg and e l s e w h e r e i n Germany, m e d i a e v a l p o r t r a y a l s seldom, i f e v e r , f e a t u r e t h e c r o s s . In a f r e s c o i n t h e Convent Church o f Nonnberg i n S a l z b u r g - one o f t h e e a r l i e s t r e p r e s e n t a t i o n s , d a t i n g from 1150 - t h e S a i n t i s shown w i t h t h e m a r t y r ' s palm; a c c o r d i n g t o l e g e n d , p a l m - b e a r i n g a n g e l s a p p e a r e d t o him i n a dream t o f o r e t e l l t h e manner o f h i s d e a t h . ^ ° E l s e w h e r e , however, he c a r r i e s t h e d i s h and t h e s c e p t r e . L a t e r German l e g e n d i n t h e form o f t h e M i n s t r e l ' s T a l e has e q u i p p e d t h e f i g u r e of t h e S a i n t w i t h the f u r t h e r i c o n o - g r a p h i c a t t r i b u t e s o f t h e r a v e n b e a r i n g a r i n g i n i t s beak and o f t e n s e a t e d upon the d i s h o r r o y a l o r b . And i t i s i n t h i s form t h a t we f i n d the s t a t u e a s s o c i a t e d w i t h the o t h - ers f o r m i n g the s o - c a l l e d D o l l i n g e r g r o u p . ^

The a r t i s t i c and l i t e r a r y m a n i f e s t a t i o n s of t h e Oswald l e g e n d are v e r y c l o s e l y r e l a t e d . Curschmann has c o n f i r m e d t h a t the M i n s t r e l ' s T a l e o f S t . Oswald may w e l l have o r i g - i n a t e d i n Regensburg d u r i n g t h e t w e l f t h and t h i r t e e n t h c e n -

t u r i e s , w h i l e Dünninger, who i s w e l l known f o r h i s r e - s e a r c h on the f o l k - l o r e o f Regensburg, was the f i r s t t o

p o i n t o u t t h e s i g n i f i c a n c e o f a passage i n t h e poem which r e a d s :

Oswalt daz sage ich dir vüvwar, so solt du der vierzehen not- helfazre einer sin / das solt du haben von den gendden min.

T h i s passage he saw i n c o n n e c t i o n w i t h t h e s t a i n e d - g l a s s C a t h e d r a l window, which shows Oswald and two o t h e r l o c a l

(and l a r g e l y B a v a r i a n ) s a i n t s , S t . L e o n h a r d and S t . B l a - s i u s , o f t e n c o u n t e d among t h e o t h e r f o u r t e e n known as the

Nothelfer. Dünninger goes on t o c o n c l u d e t h a t n o t o n l y the s e c u l a r t a l e o f Oswald, b u t a l s o t h e s a c r a l c u l t o f the F o u r t e e n H o l y H e l p e r s had t h e i r o r i g i n h e r e i n Regens-

b u r g , and t h a t Oswald was i n t e g r a l t o b o t h . T h i s i s no l e s s t r u e o f t h e D o l l i n g e r g r o u p , o f which Oswald once formed t h e c e n t r e , b u t here b o t h t h e a r t i s t i c and t h e l i t - e r a r y m a n i f e s t a t i o n s a r e c l o s e l y bound up w i t h t h e h i s t o r y and t r a d i t i o n o f Regensburg.

Today o n l y a r e p r o d u c t i o n o f t h e o r i g i n a l g r o u p i s t o be seen i n t h e s o - c a l l e d Dollingersaal, i n t h e r e c o n s t r u c t - ed p a t r i c i a n house which once b e l o n g e d t o t h e f a m i l y o f t h a t n a m e .3 5 Most s t r i k i n g i s t h e l a r g e b a s - r e l i e f (4.90 metres l o n g and 2.20 m e t r e s h i g h ) which d e p i c t s a j o u s t between two armed k n i g h t s , one o f whom has been p i e r c e d under t h e e a r by h i s opponent's l a n c e . On one s i d e s t a n d s the mounted s t a t u e o f K i n g Henry I , b u t t h e r e p r o d u c t i o n l a c k s an i m p o r t a n t f e a t u r e o f t h e o r i g i n a l . O l d woodcuts and e n g r a v i n g s i n d i c a t e t h a t t h e k i n g once h e l d a c r o s s i n h i s r i g h t hand - an a s p e c t w h i c h f i g u r e s s i g n i f i c a n t l y i n the b a l l a d . B o t h r e p r o d u c t i o n and t h e e n g r a v i n g s , however, show t h e k i n g w i t h a f a l c o n on h i s g l o v e d l e f t hand, a sym- b o l o f h i s nickname/ "The P o w l e r . "3^ On t h e o t h e r s i d e s t a n d s t h e monumental f i g u r e o f S t . Oswald, o v e r 2.20 me- t r e s h i g h . A l t h o u g h i n t h i s c a s e t h e o r i g i n a l s t a t u e has been p r e s e r v e d ( i t can be seen i n t h e M u n i c i p a l Museum),

The meaning o f the group and the s t o r y b e h i n d i t can h a r d l y be m i s i n t e r p r e t e d . I t i s e v i d e n t l y i n t e n d e d t o p o r - t r a y an e p i s o d e commemorated by the D o l l i n g e r B a l l a d , a pop- u l a r t a l e w i t h a t r a d i t i o n t h a t might e x t e n d back s e v e r a l hundred y e a r s and was w e l l - e n o u g h known t o f i n d i t s way i n - to Clemens B r e n t a n o ' s e a r l y c o l l e c t i o n o f f o l k - s o n g s en-

t i t l e d Des Knaben Wunderhorn (1805-08). I t i s t h e l e g e n d o f t h e S a i n t as t o l d by Bede t h a t d e t e r m i n e s the p r i n c i p a l f e a t u r e s o f the D o l l i n g e r s t o r y : i n b o t h cases the k i n g h i m s e l f e r e c t s a c r o s s on the s i t e o f t h e b a t t l e , t h u s e n s u r i n g v i c t o r y f o r the C h r i s t i a n s i d e o v e r a pagan a d v e r s a r y . In s p i t e o f the tendency of such c h r o n - i c l e s t o i n d u l g e i n f a b l e , t h e r e a r e some r e m a r k a b l e h i s - t o r i c a l c o r r o b o r a t i o n s o f the e a r l y i n t e g r a t i o n o f N i e d e r - münster Abbey i n t o the l e g e n d . S t . E r h a r d , t h e p a t r o n s a i n t and p o s s i b l e f o u n d e r o f t h e o r i g i n a l abbey was s a i d t o be a n a t i v e o f I r e l a n d , o r a t the v e r y l e a s t t o have r e c e i v e d h i s e d u c a t i o n i n I r i s h m o n a s t e r i e s ; hence, i t i s n o t a l t o g e t h e r i m p o s s i b l e t h a t he s h o u l d have been one o f t h o s e who h e l p e d

Moreover, K i n g Henry I had a s p e c i a l r e l a t i o n s h i p t o t h e same Abbey, f o r he c o n t r i b u t e d a newer, l a r g e r c h u r c h , and was l a t e r b u r i e d t h e r e i n 955. A t t h e same t i m e , h i s widow J u d i t h was r e g a r d e d as the f o u n d r e s s o f t h e r e l i g i o u s c o n - g r e g a t i o n w h i c h s u p p l a n t e d the o l d e r one and which c o n t i n - ued t o f l o u r i s h u n t i l t h e s e c u l a r i z a t i o n i n 1803. I n t h e l i g h t o f such c o n t i n u i t y i t seems most p r o b a b l e t h a t t h e nuns o f Niedermünster Abbey were i n s t r u m e n t a l i n p r e s e r v - i n g not o n l y t h e memory o f t h e i r S t . E r h a r d , b u t a l s o t h a t o f the D o l l i n g e r l e g e n d and S t . Oswald. The armour, as w e l l as t h e s t o r y b e h i n d i t , were do doubt a s o u r c e o f p r i d e f o r t h e c o n v e n t , as shown by t h e p a i n t i n g s i n t h e c h u r c h some-

But t h e l e g e n d and t h e p r o c e s s o f i t s growth c a n be seen i n a s o c i o l o g i c a l as w e l l as i n a h i s t o r i c a l l i g h t . The D o l - l i n g e r group o f s t a t u e s r e f l e c t s the m e n t a l i t y o f a time a t w h i c h the M i d d l e C l a s s was r i s i n g i n i m p o r t a n c e and w e a l t h , and s e t t h e tone i n Regensburg. The h e r o , h i m s e l f , i s a com- moner who r i s e s t o t h e rank o f k n i g h t h o o d - a c a s e o f v i c a r - i o u s w i s h - f u l f i l m e n t t y p i c a l o f t h a t found i n l a t e r mediae- v a l German n a r r a t i v e s . As has a l r e a d y been m e n t i o n e d , t h e r a v e n and t h e r i n g o f t h e Oswald s t a t u e a r e d e r i v e d from t h e M i n s t r e l ' s T a l e , i n which we see a s i m i l a r phenomenon.

Here we f i n d a c o m p l e t e l y new Oswald, one who has l i t t l e i n common w i t h t h e o r i g i n a l f i g u r e , as w e l l a s a r a d i c a l l y d i f - f e r e n t t r e a t m e n t o f a c t i o n , s e t t i n g , and atmosphere. In the s e c u l a r v e r s i o n , t h e S a i n t a p p e a r s i n r e a l i s t i c g a r b and has been degraded t o a c h i l d o f t h i s w o r l d . S e l f - g a i n a p p e a r s i n p l a c e o f s e l f - s a c r i f i c e , w e a l t h i n p l a c e o f p o v e r t y , i n - d i v i d u a l h a p p i n e s s a s opposed t o t h e common w e l f a r e - i n o t h e r words, t h e v a l u e s o f w e l l - t o - d o m e r c a n t i l e c i t i z e n s r a t h e r than t h e a s c e t i c o t h e r w o r l d l i n e s s g e n e r a l l y a t t r i b - u t e d t o t h e S a i n t . Even h i s character i n d e l e b i l i s a s a P r i e s t K i n g5 0 i s abandoned f o r w o r l d l y prowess and adven- t u r e .

But Oswald does n o t remain t h e p a t r o n s a i n t o f t h e n o b l e and t h e w e l l - t o - d o M i d d l e C l a s s a l o n e . I n a f u r t h e r s t a g e of development he i s seen a s t h e g u a r d i a n o f f a r m e r s and

l i v e s t o c k , and as such he has l i v e d on i n B a v a r i a n h a r - v e s t customs and f o l k t r a d i t i o n . A t one t i m e , the l a s t s h e a f of the l a s t f i e l d was l e f t s t a n d i n g when the g r a i n was c u t i n autumn; l a t e r i t was bound and b r a i d e d t o r e s e m b l e the f i g u r e o f a man, and d e c o r a t e d w i t h wreaths and f l o w e r s . The f i g u r e was c a l l e d Oswald, and the ceremony was seen as a t r i b u t e t o him i n o r d e r t o ensure good weather and a r i c h

h a r v e s t . The custom has been c o n n e c t e d by some w i t h the a n c i e n t Germanic w o r s h i p o f the Aasen (OE ds i s t h e word f o r 'god'), and w i t h Wo tan or Donar, a t h e o r y which i s more than c o n t r o v e r s i a l . ^ A t any r a t e , i t a p p e a r s t h a t the c u s - tom c o n t i n u e d t o e x i s t up t o t h e l a s t g e n e r a t i o n , and even i n E n g l a n d s i m i l a r o b s e r v a n c e s i n r u r a l d i s t r i c t s - the w i n d i n g o f wreaths, the t w i s t i n g o f r e e d s i n t o emblems o f S t . Oswald, the mowing o f hay - a r e c o n n e c t e d w i t h the F e a s t Day o f the S a i n t .5 4

Thus the c u l t o f S t . Oswald e v i d e n c e s a t r a n s f o r m a t i o n h i g h l y t y p i c a l o f s a i n t s ' l e g e n d s d u r i n g t h e M i d d l e Ages.

With the r i s e o f towns and a new m e r c a n t i l e M i d d l e C l a s s , the C h r i s t i a n k i n g f a d e s as a f i g u r e o f i m p o r t a n c e , and a new c o n c e p t o f the S a i n t emerges, one more i n k e e p i n g w i t h the v a l u e s o f the s o c i a l s t r a t u m i n which the c u l t i s

embedded. With the r i s e o f the p e a s a n t c l a s s , a f u r t h e r t r a n s f o r m a t i o n i s e f f e c t e d , and a r u s t i c , B a v a r i a n i z e d l o c a l p a t r o n s a i n t grows i n i m p o r t a n c e . In the c a s e o f Os- wald, we can say t h a t t h e s e t h r e e f a c e t s o f h i s c h a r a c t e r as an o b j e c t o f v e n e r a t i o n r e f l e c t the v a l u e s and s u c c e s - s i v e i m p o r t a n c e o f the M e d i a e v a l T h r e e E s t a t e s . Thus the s a i n t ' s f i g u r e i s r e v e a l e d as a m i r r o r o f the m e d i a e v a l s o c i a l c o n t e x t which l e d t o i t s l i t e r a r y and p o p u l a r meta- morphosis h e r e i n Regensburg - a l o n g way from E n g l a n d i n more s e n s e s than one.
