Dynamic Catholic, Alive! - The Living Bread from Heaven

The readings are filled with beautiful truths this Sunday. We are re- minded that we need the spiritual sustenance that only God can pro- vide for us, just as He did for the first Christians. In our task of evan- gelization, the Eucharist is central for spurring us on to bring the Good News to others. John 6 is certainly a chapter of the Bible with which we must be very familiar. Jesus is the true bread from heaven, the One who is able to give us the food that will lead us to eternal life. Consider the importance of the Eucharist in your own spiritual journey and take a moment to think of ways that you can spend more time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Perhaps your parish has a Eucharistic adoration chapel or at least adoration time one day a week. Could you make it to a weekday Mass a few times a week to receive the nourishment you need to be more charitable to your spouse, children, siblings, and coworkers. Jesus gives us the life we need. Let’s be grateful for the great gift that is the Eucha-

rist! archstl.org/dynamic

Stewardship

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!”

1 KINGS 19:7

Jesus knows that our stewardship journey will be difficult; we are not designed to do it on our own. Fortunately, Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all ± the gift of the Eucharist; His own body and blood. When we join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength and courage to be His joyful disciples.

Sessions focus on the beliefs of the Catholic Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacra- ments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter sea- son. You are welcome to participate in the process with your ques- tions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting.

Pastor’s Pen

Once more, a reflection from Fr. Richard Rohr’s daily email from the Center for Contemplation and Action as we continue the Bread of Life Discourse.

The Eucharisticmime, and that is what it is²a story enacted through motions more than words²has four main aspects that we are to imitate from Jesus’ first enactment (presented in varying ways in Matthew 26:2628; Mark 14: 2224; Luke 22:1720, and another way by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:23 26)…

1)You also should take your full life in your hands. In very physical and scandalously incarnational language, table bread is daringly called “my body” and wine is called “my blood.” You are saying a radical “yes” to both the physical universe itself and the bloody suffering of your own life and all the world.

2)You thenthank God(eucharisteoin Greek), who is the Origin of all that life and who allows and uses the death that life includes. (During the Eucharistic Prayer, you are reminded of the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ.) You are making a choice for gratitude, abundance, and appreciation for Another, which has the power to radically decenter you. Your life and death are pure gift and must be given away in trust.

3)You choose to break your life and death wide open. You let your life be broken, used up, and you don’t spend your life protecting yourself. In handing over the small self you discover your True Self in God. “Unless the single grain of wheat dies, it remains just a grain of wheat” (John12:24). The crushed grain and grapes become the broken bread and the intoxicating wine. There is no other way for the transformation to happen.

4)You then chew on this mystery for all the rest of your days!Divine truth is known by participation with and practice of, not by more thinking or discussing or even believing. You eventually have to “eat”

the truth more than ever understand it.

Eucharist is a living mime, done first by Jesus and slowly, ever so slowly, also imitated by us.

We should hold ourselves apart from this meal only if we are not at least willing to try to live this way.

That is the only real meaning of it being a “sacrificial meal.” Jesus did it “once and for all” and we are still considering whether we want to join in. It is not moral unworthiness as much as simple

unreadiness that might keep us away from the table²and probably, if I were honest, it should have kept me from eating and drinking most days of my life when I had no intention or desire to take, give thanks, break open, and eat.

FYI ± the pattern of who is scheduled for what mass has changed, beginning as of Aug. 45. As a rule, the priest who has the Saturday 5p mass now has the Sunday 9am; and whomever has the Sunday mass at 7:30 also does the 11 am. We will continue to alternate masses each weekend.

Plumbing update: There w ere a LOT o f rocks and mud and pieces of clay pipe w hich had accumulated in the main storm drain over the course of who knows how much time. Currently, they are still removing the fist size rocks and fragments in that main run. It is unclear whether the tile fragments they are finding are part of the main run, indicating a broken pipe, or just the remains from the original source of the problem. Stay tuned…

College Students Campus Ministry

College students, parents and grandparents of college students connect with your Newman Center and campus ministry before you leave for college. The Newman Centers are NOT notified by colleges that Catholic students are on campus so many college students never locate their Catholic ministry or church at all. Your assistance is greatly needed to help our young people stay close to their faith and grow in their relationship with Our Lord. It is through their con- nection with their college Catholic community that they will be able to make good Catholic friends, continue their formation and grow as they discern what direction God has for their lives. Please enter the student’s information in the NewmanConnection http://newmanconnection.com/so the student is notified of Newman Center’s activities

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Do you like to read the Bible? Would you like to share the message with the children of our parish? If you answered “YES”, please consider volunteering to be a leader for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word dur- ing the 9 a.m. Mass. Each week during the 9 a.m. mass children be- tween the ages of PREK through Grade 4 are dismissed to listen to the Word of God pro- claimed from the Children’s Lectionary. The readings for the most part are the same readings heard at Mass, but are written in an appropriate manner for young children. As many as 30+ children have enjoyed this program, listening to God’s Word, discussing its mean- ing, and applying it to their own lives. Each week chil- dren are given materials to help them better under- stand God’s message. Everything you need (including a guide) is provided for you. Leaders are placed on a rotation schedule. Teen assistants are also needed.

For more information please contact Donna Maurer at 6352499. Please note that all volunteers must attend or have attended the Protecting God’s Children work- shop.
