Mother’s Day
Three rich brothers, Fred, Tom and Bill, want to do something special for their old mother on Mother’s Day. Fred, the first brother, remembers that his mother lives in a very small flat. So he gives her a big house with a garden. Tom, the second brother, remembers that his mother has weak legs. So he buys her a Mercedes, with a chauffeur. Bill, the third brother, remembers that his mother loves to read the newspaper every day, but now she can’t see well. So he gets her an intelligent parrot that can read the newspaper aloud to her.
Soon, the brothers get thank-you letters from their mother. The first son’s letter says, “Dear Tom, thank you for the nice house, but it’s much too big! I’m old and can’t clean all the rooms.” The second son gets a thank-you letter that reads, “Dear Fred, thank you for the car. But I don’t go to town very often, so I don’t need a car. And I don’t like the chauffeur.” The third son’s letter says,
“My darling Bill, you know just what your mother loves! The chicken was excellent!”

A surprise birthday party
Name:
Station 8
Task 1
Read the following text and highlight all the words for food in one colour and all the drinks in another colour.
Kate: It’s my sister Alison’s birthday on Friday. Let’s organize a surprise birthday party for her.
Colin: That’s a good idea. We can all do something.
Kate: I can bake a big cake.
Colin: She likes chocolate and coconut and marzipan.
Tessa: Those are the things you like, Colin.
Sean: Me too! And lots of cream.
Kate: OK, OK, a chocolate-coconut cream-marzipan cake. That’s difficult. I’ll need some help.
Tessa: I can help you with the cake. I can make some snacks, too: ham and cheese sandwiches, meat balls and potato salad.
Kate: Thanks, Tessa. And we can go shopping together for all the things we’ll need. What are you boys doing?
Colin: I’ll go shopping, too. I’ll buy drinks: milk for milk shakes, lemonade, cola, ginger beer, orange juice and apple juice.
Sean: I’ll come with you and buy crisps, peanuts, and cheese crackers. Is that everything?
Tessa: No, some fruit would be good. I can buy some strawberries and some grapes.
Kate: That’s enough food and drink. What else do we need for a party?
Tessa: Lots of people! I’ll write invitations to all Alison’s other friends. I can ask them to give us some money to buy the things we need. I’ll collect the money.
Kate: And I can write the invitations to our relatives.
Sean: We can’t have a party without music. I can bring my big CD-player and some CDs.
Tessa: Your CDs aren’t up to date! I’ll bring some of mine. They’re better.
Task 2
