Dear David,

Yesterday Mrs Dobson took us to an underground prison called the London Dungeon. It must be much older than she is. In one room, a man in a black robe was looking straight into my eyes when he shouted, “I’ll punish you for your sins and hang you by the neck for your crimes!” It still makes my hair stand on end when I think of it. Then we went into a room where a man was lying on a big table. I hope he was already dead because another man with a big knife cut open his belly and took out his heart, his liver and all the rest. It gave me the creeps. We all screamed when we felt drops of blood on our faces. It’s nothing for people with a weak heart, but Mrs Dobson liked it.

Then Mrs Dobson said that she was hungry and took us to “the restaurant”. Well, it was very scary, too. Have you ever eaten a pizza with eyeballs and fingers on it? “If you like this sort of food, your Dad can book the place for your birthday parties,” Mrs Dobson said. Betsy and I couldn’t sleep that night because we felt sick. Tomorrow Mrs Dobson is going to take us to London Zoo. I hope it’s a real zoo with real animals!

They have a good dinner with lots of Italian wine, fresh bread, excellent sausages and cheese. They creep into their tent very early and fall asleep at once.

In the middle of the night Holmes wakes Doctor Watson.

For a while they lie side by side and look up at the sky.

“Watson, look up. What do you see?”

“Well, I see a full moon and thousands of twinkling stars.”

Task 2

Last weekend after a beach party, three British tourists stole seven-year-old Dirk, a penguin, from Sea World in Australia. The men broke into the aqua- rium and went for a swim with the dolphins. They also took a video of them- selves swimming with the dolphins. Then they jumped into the penguin pool, kidnapped Dirk and took him to their hotel room.

“We were so drunk that we didn’t know what we were doing,” said one of the men when the police arrested (verhaften) them. “When we woke up in the morning, we couldn’t believe our eyes. There was this 13-inch-tall (1 inch = 2,54 cm) animal walking up and down in the room. We were afraid he might die and did our best to care for him. He was quite tame (zahm). We fed him and put him under the shower. We didn’t know what to do with the animal, so we smuggled Dirk out of the hotel in a rucksack and let him free in a canal.”

Dirk swam through the canal out into the open sea and was found by the sea patrol

before the sharks (Haie) could eat him. Dirk is now back at Sea World with his girlfriend Peaches.

Task 1

Read the four e-mails and highlight any words you don’t know. Then look them up in an English- German dictionary.

Mails from abroad

Hi Jane,

You wouldn’t believe how hot Vancouver can get in the summer. It took us all by surprise when we arrived here three months ago. Mum and Dad are happy because they’ve both found good jobs here in Canada. My new school is very different from my old school in Bristol. Vancouver is a port, too, and very international. There are kids in my class from Japan, Bosnia and Poland, so I’m nothing unusual. They’re OK, too. I’ve even found a new girlfriend and I’ve attached a photo of us having a kiss. Don’t scream – it’s just a joke! The truth is, I’m really missing you.

LoveDanny

1

Dear Cathy,

Do you miss your old friends here in Christchurch? In his last mail, your dad told me that he enjoyed his new job flying to the oil rigs, but the weather there in Aberdeen was often very bad.

It must be very cold there! I told your dad to find a warmer place for his next job. A helicopter pilot can find work anywhere – perhaps one day you and your dad will come back to New Zealand?

I’m sending you some warm pullovers. Do you remember Timmy? He was only a tiny kitten when you left. Look how big he is now.

LoveGrandma Bates

2

Dear Colin and Moira,

Greenville is a wonderful place to live. It’s a small town right in the middle of Maine and the people here are all very relaxed and cool. It’s as different from London as it’s possible to be!

There are forests and lakes all around us. The photo shows one of our new American neigh- bours. All the family wear masks. They’re real bandits!

Yours Alan

3

Dear Tina,

Yaapeet is a funny name, isn’t it? There are lots of funny place names here in Victoria. I haven’t seen much of Australia yet. I miss Wales and you and my other friends back in Llanelli, but I’ve been too busy to feel sad. This is a beautiful area and it’s near a big lake and the Wyperfeld National Park. I went there last week with my parents. I took this photo of a mother and her child.

Do you know they can only eat eucalyptus leaves?

Love Gwenneth

A pair of trick thieves

Last August we toured the north of England in our car. One day Mum and Dad decided to drive to Whitby across the North Yorkshire Moors. We stopped in Guisborough and bought some warm meat pies at a pie shop.

They smelled wonderful. “Don’t eat them now,” Mum said. “We can eat them on the way.” The moors (Heidelandschaft) were very beautiful. We stopped at a nice spot and took a blanket and our meat pies out of the car. Just then we saw a large dog. It was lim- ping (humpeln) and it came towards us and stopped several

metres away. It sat down and looked at us in a friendly way.

It was a beautiful dog. I think it was a golden retriever.

We all walked over to it and my sister put her arms around its

neck. Mum and Dad patted (tätscheln) its nose and I took a photo. Just then I heard a noise behind me and when

I turned around, I saw a small black and white mongrel (Mischling) with our bag of meat pies in its mouth! Dad saw it at the same time and we both ran towards it,

shouting and waving our hands.

The mongrel ran off with the plastic bag hanging from its mouth. It knew we couldn’t catch it. It stopped about two hundred metres away and watched us carefully. Then we noticed the retriever running towards it. “It’s going to chase that nasty mongrel away and bring our meat pies back,” my sister said. But then we noticed that it wasn’t limping now. And when they met, they rubbed noses in a friend- ly way. The mongrel dropped the bag and they both lay down and calmly ate our meat pies. Dad laughed. “Those are two clever trick thieves. One got our attention and the other got our food. Never mind. We’ll soon be in Whitby and there’s a wonderful fish and chip restaurant right next to the car park.”
