Temporal adverbs (with accusative and genitive)
In certain contexts the accusative and genitive cases of nouns can be used adverbially, without a preposition, to express ideas of time.
Adverbial time phrases with the accusative
A noun denoting time can be used in the accusative case to express duration of time or a specific point in time or period in time.
The accusative can be used to indicate a length of time
The period of time lies entirely in the past, present or future, and the accusative usually corresponds to English for.
Ich war einen Monat in Deutschland. - I was in Germany for a month.
Er lebte viele Jahre im Ausland. - He stayed abroad for many years.
Ich bin jede Woche einen Tag in Wien. - I am in Vienna one day every week.
Er lag den ganzen Tag im Bett. - He lay in bed the whole day/all day long.
den ganzen Sommer (lang)– all summer, for the whole of the summer den ganzen Winter (hindurch/über) – throughout the winter
sein ganzes Leben (lang) – all his life/for his whole life
Wo warst du die ganze Zeit? – Where were you the whole time?
eine ganze Weile – for quite a while
The accusative can be used to indicate a specific time
Particulary in phrases denoting a period of time, corresponding to English last week, next year, etc.:
Er kommt jeden Tag/jede Woche. – He comes every day/every week.
Sie fährt alle vierzehn Tage nach Wien. – She goes to Vienna every two weeks.
Er kommt jede halbe Stunde vorbei. – He comes past every half hour.
Wir besuchen sie nächsten/kommenden Dienstag. – We are visiting her next Tuesday.
Wir besuchen sie nächste/kommende Woche. – We are visiting her next week.
Wir werden dieses Jahr nicht verreisen. – We are not going away this year.
Ich sah sie letzten/vorigen/vergangenen Freitag. - I saw her last Friday.
Ich sah sie letzte/vorige/vergangene Woche. - I saw her last week.
In many contexts a prepositional phrase can be use as an alternative to a phrase in the accusative case:
am nächsten/kommenden Dienstag - nächsten/kommenden Dienstag – next Tuesday
am letzten/vorigen/vergangenen Freitag - letzten/vorigen/vergangenen Freitag – next Friday in der nächsten/kommenden Woche - nächste/kommende Woche = next week
in diesem Jahr - dieses Jahr – this year
Anfang, Mitte and Ende, unlike their English equivalents, are used without a preposition, i.e. in the accusative, in time phrases:
Er starb Anfang/Mitte/Ende Januar. – He died at the beginning/in the middle/at the end of January.
Ich fahre schon Anfang/Mitte/Ende nächster Woche. – I am leaving at the beginning/in the middle/at the end of next week.
Note that if Anfang and Ende are used without a following time phrase, they are preceded by am, e.g. am Anfang – at the beginning; am Ende – at the end.
Adverbial time phrases with the genitive
The genitive case of nouns denoting time can refer to indefinite or habitual time:
eines Tages – one day
eines schönen Tages – one fine day eines Sonntags – one Sunday eines Morgens – one morning
eines Nachts (although die Nacht is feminine) – one night
Some genitive phrases have become simple adverbs, and they are written with a small initial letter:
morgens, vormittags – in the mornings
nachmittags, abends – in the afternoons, in the evenings nachts – at night
dienstags, freitags – on Tuesdays, on Fridays
wochentags, werktags – on weekdays, on working days donnerstagsabends – on Thursday evenings
von morgens bis abends – from morning till night morgens und abends – morning and evening
Position of the adverbials
The position of the adverbial adjuncts is very free, but there are some weak tendencies:
1. temporal adverbials (time) 2. modal adverbials (manner) 3. local adverbials (place)
Ich fahre um neun Uhr mit dem Auto zum Restaurant.
Examples
subject – verb – prepositional phrase (
time–
manner-
place)
Die Mädchen lesen um neun Uhr im Wohnzimmer.
Die Jungen spielen um sieben Uhr dreißig im Schlafzimmer.
Die Manager sitzen um Viertel nach neun am Tisch.
Die Frau fährt um halb zehn mit dem Auto in die Stadt.
subject – verb – prepositional phrase (
time) – accusative object
Ich werde in fünf Minuten einen Kaffee trinken.
Du wirst am Nachmittag ein Buch lesen.
Er wird morgen ein neues Auto kaufen.
