Baptism ! The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children and with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Preparation Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the Church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics. If they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind.

!

Anointing of the Sick ! This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of ad- vanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass if you would like to receive this sacrament.

!

Marriage ! This great sacrament of vocation is a joyous time, but also a time of very serious spiritual preparation.

The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre ! Cana, or another approved marriage preparation program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other details of the wedding particu- larly reception facilities.

!

Religious Education ! Our program helps parents educate their children about our Catholic faith and traditions.

We offer a comprehensive program for children in grades 1 ! 8 from September through April. Our program is combined with our linked sister parish, Sacred Heart in Bay Head, and classes are held there on Sundays fol- lowing the 9:15am Mass. For more information or to register call John Paglione, Religious Education Coordina- tor, at 732 ! 899 ! 1398, x5.

! ! SIMON’S SOUP KITCHEN!

!

“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me in”. Matthew 25:35!

!Simon’s Soup Kitchen is a taxexempt 501(c)(3) corpora- tion run by Council 8415 of the Knights of Columbus.

Their mission is to provide nutritious meals, free of charge, to anyone who is seeking nourishment or com- panionship in a safe, warm and caring environment. Eve- ryone is welcome, regardless of age, sex, race, financial need or religious beliefs. The Soup Kitchen operates out of the Parish Hall of Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Grant Avenue in Seaside Heights and serves meals on Tuesday and Friday evenings starting October 22nd at 5:30pm, through the end of April. It has just completed its’ four- teenth season. The Soup Kitchen receives all it’s funding through donations. While there is a sufficient supply of volunteer servers, there is a need for additional cooks and pot washers. The biggest need is your continued financial support. If you want to make a tax deductible donation, you can send it to Simon’s Soup Kitchen, PO Box 551, Seaside Pk., NJ 08752. If you are interested in volunteer- ing to help or have any questions, you can contact Nick Zaccaria at 7327931936.!

The Knights of Columbus, Council 8415 provides a container in the vestibule of the Church for the collection of used eyeglass- es. They are sent to “New Eyes for the

Needy.” The eyeglasses are tested and sorted by volunteers for use by medical missions and hospitals in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Africa, Asia and Central Europe as well as by American vet- erans. Please remember to drop your old eyeglass- es in the container. Thank you.

From Father Doug: !

“The Christian is cheerful, easy, kind, gentle, courteous, candid, unassuming; has no pretense, no affectation, no ambition, no singularity; because he has neither hope nor fear about this world. He is seri- ous, sober, discreet, grave, moderate, mild, with so little that is unusual or striking in his bearing, that he may easily be taken at first sight for an ordinary man.

! In this day especially it is very easy for men to be benevolent, liberal, and dispassionate. It costs nothing to be dispassionate when you feel nothing, to be cheerful when you have nothing to fear, to be generous or liberal when what you give is not your own, and to be benevolent and considerate when you have no principles and no opinions.” (St. John Henry Cardinal Newman) !

! This past Sunday Cardinal Newman was can- onized as a Saint o f the Universal Church. I was pre- sent in England when he was beatified by Pope Ben- edict XVI. It was an absolutely beautiful Mass, and it was easy to see Pope Benedict’s devotion and in- tense study of Newman.

Newman was a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism, as am I, yet his journey was far more difficult than mine. He was beloved by his people when he left the Church of England. Speaking of himself and all priests, he said in his final sermon as an Anglican called “The Parting of Friends”, he said

“if what he has said or done has ever made you take interest in him, and feel well inclined towards him;

remember such a one in time to come, though you hear him not, and pray for him, that in all things he may know God's will, and at all times he may be ready to fulfil it .”!

One of his gifts to us is a simple prayer, which reflects his motto “Cor ad Cor Loquitur”, “Heart speaks unto heart” in a clear and simple way.

“O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shad- ows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world lies hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last.” !

St. John Henry Cardinal Newman, pray for us. !

Curl Up With Hot Coffee!

That wonderfully warming cup of morning coffee may have health benefits. The caffeine in coffee stimulates the brain and nervous system, and may lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, mood problems, headaches, and even cavities. Scientists have discovered coffee’s many beneficial substances, including chlorogenic acid, a compound in the antioxi- dant family that may improve glucose (sugar) metabolism. Another perk is that coffee contains magnesium, a mineral that can also improve insulin sensitivity and enhance glucose tolerancethumbs up for preventing diabetes. Another plus is that coffee is naturally caloriefree. Just don’t load it up with extra calories from cream, sugar, whipped cream, and/or flavored syrup.!
