Brief description of the project
The programme helps people to improve their well-being through gaining their understanding of the key issues and providing practical guidance on how to develop workable solutions. Marks and Spencer have a long tradition in realising Workplace Health Promotion. It seems important to include Mental Health Promotion in these concepts.
Aims of the project
· Improving the psychosocial health and remove stigma associated with mental health in the work-place.
· Improving the skills, well-being and behaviour of the line managers.
· Providing a mechanism for early detection and intervention of mental health issues.
· Creating a more positive attitude in the stores.
· Increasing the quality of the customer experience and the level of discretionary effort.
· Increasing staff attendance levels.
Method of Intervention
· Help given by the trainer to aid understanding of a participant’s detailed personal profile.
· Teaching cognitive behavioural skills to provide the participants with a toolkit of resources
· Building support amongst the group
· Offering the opportunity to meet the Trainer outside of the workshop for counselling Duration of the project
From 2001 to 2003 (test phase is termed).
Target group/Participants
Approximately 2000 section managers in the company’s 350 UK stores. Participants are aged from early 20s to late 50s. Most of the section managers are female.
Co-operation/Participants’ involvement
· Resource Systems Harrogate UK, specialists in improving well-being at work in partnership with
· Marks & Spencer’s Occupational Health Services Outcomes of the project
The programme is positioned as a positive step in managing pressure, not as a remedial programme for people who can’t cope. It therefore helps to increase the awareness of pressure and stress in the business and hopefully remove the stigma associated with mental ill health.
Indicators that these goals are being achieved include:
· Improved PMI scores
· Improved relationships at work and productivity
· Fewer cases of work related mental ill health Contact:
