Bewer

MEASUREMENTS OF GAS EXCHANGE IN YOUNG SPRUCE SAPLINGS DURING FUMIGATION WITH OZONE IN COMBINATION WITH NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND/OR SULPHUR DIOXIDE AT THE TIME OF SHOOT GROWTH
K . Gross1 and E. Wagner2
University of Freiburg ( FRG ) Institutes of 1silviculture and 2Biology II ABSTRACT
Fumigation of spruce plants ith 03 , NO2 and SO2 during late swnmer can reduce photosyn
thesis without the plants showing any visible symptoms . Earlier experiments have shown that photosynthesis of spruce plants fumigated with 03 shortly before and during shooting are re
latively insensitive to this toxic substance.
In order to confirm these observations, spruce saplings ( c . 80-100 cm in heigh ) were fumi
gated with 03 (150-190 ppb ) , NO2 ( 40-60 ppb ) and/or SO2 ( 80-90 ppb ) for 7-9 hours daily during the period of shooting and for several weeks afterwards. The fumigations were carried out in a small growth chamber under conditions otherwise favourable for gas exchange. It could be shown that the rapid rise in photo
synthesis associated with shooting was not hindered by the fumigations in any of the ca
ses measured. Furthermore, subsequent fumi
gation over a period of weeks did not result in any significant decrease in photosynthesis . From studies on the interaction of mono
terpenes and 03, the conclusion can be drawn that ( the increase in) monoterpene production occuring during growth of the young shoots counteracts potential injury by 03•
INTRODUCTION
Latent effects of the air pollutants on the photosynthetic apparatus of Norway spruce are known since many years ( Keller , 1977 ) . Fumi
gation experiments using seven year old spruce plants with mature shoots did show, that re
duction in photosynthesis was most of the time fully reversible . It was also observed that reduction of photosynthesis due to fumigation with 03'. recovered already during fumigation just prior and during the development of new shoots ( Gross, 1987 ) . To verify these obser
vations individual plants were fumigated for six weeks during shooting and thereafter with simultaneous recording of total gas exchange.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Material : Potted Norway spruce saplings ( Picea abies ( L . ) Karst . ) , 7 year old and 70 to 100 cm in hight .
Equipment : Two 1 m3 phytotrones for the whole plants separate conditioning for the roots and continuous monitoring of gas exchange.
Experimental conditions : _2 _
Lighting : PAR, 1,3 mmol .m . sec 1 ( global ) in the middle of the chamber ( top of plants,
1, 7 mmo1 .m-2. sec-l ) . _2WA, 25 W.m-2 ( planar ) ; WB , 2
w. m
( planar ) ; light was from metal halogen lamps closely simulating sun light .Photoperiod: 13 h light , 1 1 h dark Air temperature: see figures
Humidity: 6 , 5 Pa/kPa water vapour pressure deficit
Air turbulence: 2-4 m . sec-l during the day Co2 concentration : 320 ppm
Water supply: optimal
Fumigation: 03: 150-190 ppb 7 to 9 h daily NO2: 40-60 ppb 7 to 9 h daily
( together with 03 only) SO2: 80-90 ppb 9 to 10 h
daily during the day The concentrations of the gases were moni
tored by analysers for 03, SO2 and NOx.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Fig. 1 shows an example of recovery fr2m in
hibition of photosynthesis by 03 + NO just prior and during shooting . Similar results are presented in Fig. 2-5 .
The increase in net photosynthesis was hardly affected by the different fumigations . Addi
tional water stress ( Fig. 2) did not induce any damage.

photosynthesis and transpiration on vapour pressure deficit after -fumigation plants used in the experiment shown in reduction in net photosynthesis was observed 1-2 weeks after the completion of shooting.Similarly, after S02 fumigation transpiration was slightly reduced . In Fig. 1-6 , 9 and 10 photosynthesis increase during the course of fumigation . In most of the experiments a net photosynthesis and dark respiration in
fluenced by a sequence of fumigations with
fumigation probably resulted in conciderable damage as prior to fumigation transpiration in dry air was higher than after fumigation ( Fig . 10) . In all the experiments plants showed a higher respiration during flushing and sub
sequent shoot growt.h than after completion of growth . No visible damage upon fumigations could be observed .
