K e n n z e i c h n e n d für d e n v i e l s c h i c h t i g e n K o m m u n i k a t i o n s p r o z e ß d e r W a l l -f a h r t ist d e r enge B e z u g d e r W a l l -f a h r e r z u m T r a n s z e n d e n t e n ; d e n n die W a l l f a h r t b i l d e t eine F o r m religiösen H a n d e l n s , d i e n i c h t aus-schließlich a u f eine diesseitige, reale L e b e n s e r f a h r u n g B e z u g n i m m t . D a b e i w a r der B e w e g g r u n d , eine b e s t i m m t e Kultstätte a u f z u s u c h e n , n i c h t z u l e t z t d u r c h eine m e h r o d e r m i n d e r k o n k r e t e V o r s t e l l u n g v o n d e n s p e z i f i s c h e n E i g e n s c h a f t e n des b e t r e f f e n d e n K u l t g e g e n s t a n

-des b e e i n f l u ß t .3 9 2 D i e V e r e h r u n g v o n H e i l i g e n v e r b a n d s i c h stets m i t d e r V o r s t e l l u n g , daß diese als Fürsprecher b e i d e r allmächtigen G o t t h e i t i n e i n e m v o m W a l l f a h r e r v e r b a l i s i e r t e n A n l i e g e n v o r s t e l l i g w e r -d e n k ö n n t e n .

I m M i t t e l p u n k t d e r W a l l f a h r t n a c h E l c h i n g e n steht die G o t t e s -m u t t e r M a r i a , die e n t s p r e c h e n d d e -m k i r c h l i c h e n D o g -m a v o n der G o t t e s m u t t e r s c h a f t d i e u n m i t t e l b a r s t e B e z i e h u n g silier H e i l i g e n z u G o t t b e s i t z t . A u s i h r e r F u n k t i o n als u n i v e r s e l l s t e Fürsprecherin i n a l l e n L e b e n s s i t u a t i o n e n erklärt s i c h z u m i n d e s t t e i l w e i s e die g r o ß e Popularität m a r i a n i s c h e r Wallfahrtsstätten. S o k o n n t e s i c h d e r W a l l f a h r e r i n E l c h i n -g e n , w i e i n d e n m e i s t e n W a l l f a h r t s o r t e n , für sein A n l i e g e n d e r zusätzlichen Fürsprache v o n w e i t e r e n H e i l i g e n v e r s i c h e r n . "Jetzt sprich zu den Heiligen. Ich grüsse euch auch, O ihr liebe Heiligen! zu deren Ehre dise Kirch und Altar geweyhet seynd, und deren Heiligthum und Bilder allhie aufbehalten und geehrt wer-den. Ich komm hieher euch zu besuchen, zu grossen, zu ehren, an-zuruffen, und zu bitten, daß ihr meiner bey GOtt wolt ingedenck seyn. Ich befehle mich in alle H. Für eine vielfältige H e i l i g e n v e r e h r u n g h a t t e das K l o s t e r d i e e n t s p r e c h e n d e n R a h m e n b e d i n g u n g e n g e s c h a f f e n . L e i d e r läßt s i c h d i e I n t e n -sität d e r j e w e i l i g e n V e r e h r u n g d u r c h d i e W a l l f a h r e r e b e n s o w e n i g f e s t s t e l l e n w i e d i e F r a g e n a c h der A r t u n d W e i s e , i n d e r diese H e i l i g e n b i l d e r d u r c h d i e W a l l f a h r e r für i h r e A n l i e g e n f u n k t i o n a l i s i e r t w u r -d e n . I n i h r e r h e u t e m e i s t a u f -die B e -d e u t u n g eines K u n s t g e g e n s t a n -d e s r e d u z i e r t e n F o r m fällt es s c h w e r , j e n e f u n k t i o n a l e K o m p o n e n t e z u e r m e s s e n , d i e s o l c h e K u l t u n d H e i l i g e n b i l d e r für die W a l l f a h r e r b e -sessen h a b e n m ö g e n .

A b t i n s e i n e m A n l i e g e n , als e r d a r a u f h i n w i e s , daß gerade dieser D o r n i m K l o s t e r "vornemlich" d u r c h die "angedeitete schmerzhafte bru-derschaft" eine "wohlfüegende Verehrung" e r f a h r e n w ü r d e . A n der E c h t h e i t w u r d e n i c h t g e z w e i f e l t , u n d d i e F r a g e n a c h d e r H e r k u n f t spielte n u r i n s o f e r n eine R o l l e , als sie für d i e e v e n t u e l l e K o n s t r u i e -r u n g e i n e -r L e g e n d e d u -r c h d i e E i n b e z i e h u n g d e -r b i s h e -r i g e n W u n d e -r aussagekräftig w a r . A u f a k t i v e A b s c h n i t t e , w i e das p r o z e s sionsweise G e h e n , f o l g t e n für d e n A n w e s e n d e n eher passive E l e m e n -t e , nämlich s o l c h e des E r l e b e n s v o n Z e r e m o n i e n o d e r A u f f ü h r u n g e n , u n d b e s i n n l i c h e w e c h s e l t e n m i t äußerst e f f e k t v o l l e n Aktivitäten ab.

D e r a n d i e s e m F e s t t a g b e t r i e b e n e A u f w a n d w a r bis d a h i n i m K l o s t e r E l c h i n g e n u n b e k a n n t . Dieses so t y p i s c h b a r o c k a n m u t e n d e , v o m K o n v e n t m i n u t i ö s g e p l a n t e T r a n s l a t i o n s f e s t besaß z w e i f e l l o s m e h r e -re F u n k t i o n e n . E s d i e n t e n i c h t n u r d e r S e l b s t d a r s t e l l u n g des K l o s t e r s , s o n d e r n s o l l t e d u r c h die H e r v o r h e b u n g seiner R e l i q u i e n s c h ä t z e a u c h die B e d e u t u n g des O r t s als Kultstätte p o p u l a r i s i e r e n . D i e F e i e r l i c h -k e i t h a t t e d u r c h die V e r h e r r l i c h u n g der h i m m l i s c h e n Märtyrer aber a u c h e i n e n d i d a k t i s c h - d e m o n s t r a t i v e n C h a r a k t e r , d e r d e n G l ä u b i g e n e i n e n A b g l a n z d e r h i m m l i s c h e n H e r r l i c h k e i t e r f a h r e n ließ.

Fromme Brüder und Schwestern! Ist dieß nicht die ste Lehrart, wo die Lehrmeisterin sich eines solchen Zeigers be-dient, der das leibliche und geistliche Aug des Lernenden reizet?

Wen aber reizet und lockt dieser Marianische Elchingische Lehr=

Zeiger nicht? Er ist kostbarer, denn alle Corallen. Er ist gewachsen im rothenMeer der Haupt=Schmerzen JEsu. Er ist kostbarer, denn aller Rubin. Das rubinrothe Blut Jesu aus den Wunden seines hoch-würdigsten Hauptes hat ihn gefärbt, geadelt, und geheiliget.

Wie eine gute Lehrart MariS der Elchingischen Lehr=Mutter! Se-het! der Wunder=Zeiger derselben führet die Lernenden gleichsam von selbst zum Begriffe aller Wahrheiten des sittlichen Christen-thums. Wie! sagt uns nicht dieser geheiligte Zeiger, was uns jegli-cher Dorn im sittlichen Verstände sagt: daß wir unser üppiges Fleisch sollen stechen, züchtigen, peinigen, und mit Bußwerken abtodten? Denn spricht ein heiliger Bernardus: Keineswegs will es sich geziemen, daß unter einem mit oSrnern gecrSnten Haup-te ein sich zSrHaup-telndes Glied sey. Sagt dieser Zeiger uns nicht, was dort Christus im Evangelio, daß die Reichtümer, die Welt= und Geld=sorgen, die Wollüste, DÖrner seyn, welche den aufgehenden Saamen des göttlichen Wortes ersticken, und wir deswegen uns derselben moglichstermassen entschlagen und entladen sollten?

Sagt uns dieser ho chv er ehrliche Zeiger nicht, was dort ein H. Kir-chenlehrer Hieronymus: daß Christus mit Dornern ist gecrSnet worden, au£ daß Er uns die blühende Crone des himmlischen Reichs erwürbe? Daß wir also gerne mit Christo leiden sollen, um mit Ihm ewiggecront zu werden? Endlich lasset uns auch verneh-men, wie deutlich die Lehrart unserer Elchingischen Gnaden=Mut-ter ist? Eine seltene Sach! Ihr Wunder=Zeiger führet alle Sitten-lehren und Regeln eures heiligen Schmerzen=Bundes klar, be-stimmt, ja wunderstimmig mit sich. "^{4 3 4}

M a r i a A n n a B i l l m a y e r i n v o n B i b e r a c h z e l l .4 5 0 J u s t i n a B S n z i n v o n B r u n n e n , die "an beyden Fussen gantz contract oder gelfihmet" war, legte "mit grossem Vertrauen ein an unserer Gnaden=Bildnuß der schmertzhafften Mutter angerühretes Bildlein auf die schmertzhaff-te Ort, und erhalschmertzhaff-tet dardurch ihre Gesundheit".^ I n d e r A n a l o g i e v o n e i g e n e m S c h m e r z z u m S c h m e r z d e r E l c h i n g e r G o t t e s m u t t e r dürfte für d e n H i l f e s u c h e n d e n eine n i c h t u n w e s e n t l i c h e W i r k u n g v o n s o l c h e n M a r i e n S c h m e r z K u l t b i l d e r n ausgegangen s e i n . D a ß d u r c h B e -rührung m i t d e m K u l t b i l d die d i e s e m i n n e w o h n e n d e K r a f t auf das W a l l f a h r t s b i l d c h e n übertragen w e r d e n k o n n t e , e n t s p r a c h z w a r n i c h t der k i r c h l i c h e n L e h r m e i n u n g , d e r z u f o l g e n u r G o t t selbst W u n d e r w i r k e n k a n n u n d K u l t b i l d e r v o n s i c h aus k e i n e b e s o n d e r e n Kräfte b e -s i t z e n , d e n n o c h h a n d e l t e e-s -s i c h u m eine w e i t v e r b r e i t e t e V o r -s t e l l u n g , d i e a u c h v o n d e n E l c h i n g e r B e n e d i k t i n e r n d u r c h M i r a k e l b e r i c h t e u n terstützt w u r d e . D i e P r a x i s g i n g so w e i t , d a ß , w i e b e i d e n D e v o t i o -n a l b i l d k o p i e -n , e i -n W a l l f a h r t s b i l d c h e -n , w e -n -n a u c h r e l a t i v s e l t e -n , selbst z u m K u l t b i l d w e r d e n k o n n t e .4 5 2 D i e H e i l u n g v o n p h y s i s c h u n d p s y c h i s c h K r a n k e n , aber a u c h a p o t r o p ä i s c h e Kräfte w a r e n d e n W a l l f a h r t s b i l d c h e n z u g e s c h r i e b e n e W i r k u n g e n , die s i c h die M e n s c h e n j e -n e r Z e i t z u -n u t z e m a c h t e -n , w i e f o l g e -n d e r M i r a k e l b e r i c h t a -n s c h a u l i c h d a r l e g t :

"Catharina Starckin, von Nereßheim, wäre schon eine geraume Zeit, sowol von bösen Leuten, als dem höllischen Feind selbsten sehr geplaget. Derowegen käme sie zu einem Geistlichen Herrn in Nereßheim, allda HÜlff und Rath zu suchen. Von diesem empfang-te sie ein Gnaden=Bildlein der schmertzhaffempfang-ten Mutempfang-ter von

Elchin-gen, damit sie sich durch Dero mächtigen Schutz wider alle Nach-stellung bewahren möchte. Als sie von dem Geistlichen entlassen, wurde ihr auf dem Weg sehr wehe, und als sie die schmertzhaffte Mutter in Dero Bildnuß eifrigist anruffte, brache sie viele Male-fitz-Sachen von sich. Damit aber solches Wesen sowol ihr als an-dern nicht mehr schaden möchte, sammlete sie alles mit beygeleg-ter heiliger Bildnuß in ein Schnupftuch, und warffe alles zu Hauß in den Offen, darauf drey mahl ein Feur gemacht worden. Den drit-ten Tag käme die Persohn wiederum zu dem Geistlichen, welcher dann gleich nach dem Bildlein fragte. Der Teufel aber antwortete aus der Persohn, ich habe es ins Feuer geworffen, auf weitere Frag, ob es verbrennet, sagt er: Nein. Der Geistliche schickte die Persohn so gleich nach Hauß, um das Bildlein zu suchen. Sie fände es auch unter der Aschen unverletzt, ausgenommen, an dem assersten Theilen ausser der Bildnuß selbsten in etwas weniges von dem Feur gezeichnet, da doch unterdessen sowohl das Schnupftuch als alles anderes verbrennet gewesen. Daß dieses Bildlein der schmertz-hafften Mutter also wunderbarlich seye erhalten worden, bezeuget dieser Geistliche eigenhändig unter priesterlicher Treu und Glau-ben den l.Jul. 1746."***

N o c h e i n w e i t e r e r F u n k t i o n s b e r e i c h erschließt s i c h u n m i t t e l b a r aus d e n d e m W a l l f a h r t s b i l d c h e n b e i g e d r u c k t e n G e b e t e n , w e n n es h e i ß t :

"O schmerzhafte Mutter Gottes, und reineste Jungfrau! in Verei-nigung des schmerzlichen Mitleidens, so du unter dem Kreuz dei-nes dahin sterbenden Sohns getragen, empfehle ich heut und al-lezeit, absonderlich aber in der Stund meines Hinscheidens, in dei-nen gebenedeyten Schutz mein Leib und Seel, ich lege dir in die Schooß deiner großen Barmherzigkeit all meinen Trost und Hoff-nung, Aengsten und Trübseligkeiten, mein Leben und End des Le-bens, damit, o schmerzvolle Gnaden=Mutter! durch dein heiligste

Vorbitt bey deinem für das menschliche Geschlecht gestorbenen Sohn Jesu Christo, alle meine Gedanken, Wort und Werk, zu mei-ner Seelen Nutzen und zeitlicher Wohlfahrt geordnet werden. "4 5 5

"Daß man das geweyhte Scapulier bey Tag und Nacht antragen

müsse, wofern man der Bruderschaffts=Gnaden und Freyheiten gemessen will Hiebey ist auch zu wissen, daß die Materi des Sca-puliers von allerhand Zeug und Tuch seyn könne: Die Färb aber nicht änderst, als schwartz seyn müsse. Es mag auch nach jedes Gefallen kleiner oder grösser: und also angetragen werden, daß es keine Verdrießlichkeit oder Beschwernuß verursache. H a t t e m a n d e n "höllischen Brand" m i t t e l s eines g e i s t l i c h e n H e i l -m i t t e l s z u b e k ä -m p f e n g e s u c h t , so g e s c h a h dies i n ähnlicher F o r -m a u c h i m K r a n k h e i t s f a l l v o n M e n s c h u n d T i e r . D o c h g i n g d e r F u n k t i o n s b e r e i c h des S k a p u l i e r s w e i t über d e n e i n e r m o d e r n e n M e d i z i n h i n a u s ; es w i r d i n M i r a k e l b e -r i c h t e n seh-r t -r e f f l i c h als "Kleid des Heyls" b e z e i c h n e t .

D i f f e r e n z i e r t e r e E r g e b -nisse über die i n t e n t i o n a l e n u n d f u n k t i o n a l e n A s p e k t e d e r M e d a i l l e n k ö n n e n fast ausschließlich d u r c h i n h a l t l i c h e u n d i k o n o g r a p h i s c h e A n a l y s e n g e w o n n e n w e r d e n .

A u f d e n M e d a i l l e n v o r d e r s e i t e n ist durchgängig das K u l t b i l d d e r S c h m e r z h a f t e n G o t t e s m u t t e r i n i h r e r t y p i s c h e n a t t r i b u t i v e n D a r s t e l -l u n g a b g e b i -l d e t ( A b b . 5 5 — 5 7 ) . N i c h t d i e künst-lerische A u s g e s t a -l t u n g des M o t i v e s d u r c h d e n S t e m p e l s c h n e i d e r w a r v o m A u f t r a g g e b e r u n d l e t z t l i c h w o h l a u c h v o n d e n p o t e n t i e l l e n E r w e r b e r n g e w ü n s c h t , s o n d e r n v i e l m e h r die möglichst s t a n d a r d i s i e r t e W i e d e r g a b e aller s p e z i f i -s c h e n M e r k m a l e de-s K u l t b i l d e -s . E -s m a g die-s n i c h t n u r d e m W u n -s c h e n t s p r o c h e n h a b e n , möglichst o r i g i n a l g e t r e u e A b b i l d e r z u e r h a l t e n , s o n d e r n w o h l a u c h d e r A b s i c h t , e i n e r s o l c h e n M e d a i l l e e i n m ö g l i c h s t u n v e r w e c h s e l b a r e s Gepräge z u g e b e n . H i n z u k a m , daß die M e d a i l -l e n u m s c h r i f t e n unmißverständ-lich E -l c h i n g e n a-ls K u -l t o r t n e n n e n . D e n n diese M e d a i l l e n h a t t e n , v e r g l e i c h b a r m i t a n d e r e n D e v o t i o n a l i e n , s i c h e r a u c h eine k u l t p r o p a g a n d i s t i s c h e F u n k t i o n .

E i n e w e s e n t l i c h b r e i t e r e u n d v o n d a h e r a u c h aufschlußreichere M o t i v v a r i a n z w e i s e n die Medaillenrückseiten auf. 3. Denjenigen, so vom Teufel angefochten werden, bringen sie Beschirmung.

4. Wenn das Vieh bezaubert ist, und man den Pfennig ins Was-ser legt und das Vieh damit waschet, so muß die Bezauberung weichen.

5. Wenn in der Milch oder Butter ein unnatürlicher Schaden ver-spürt wird, so soll man den Pfennig ins Wasser legen, und das
