Abstrat.WeextrataninvarianttakingvaluesinN[f1g,whihweallthe
orderofalgebraitorsion,fromtheSympletiFieldTheoryofalosedontat
manifold,andshowthatitsnitenessgivesobstrutionstotheexisteneofsym-
pletillingsandexatsympletiobordisms.Aontatmanifoldhasalgebrai
torsionoforder0ifandonlyifitisalgebraiallyovertwisted(i.e.hastrivialontat
homology),andanyontat3-manifoldwithpositiveGirouxtorsionhasalgebrai
torsionoforder1(thoughtheonverseisnottrue).Wealsoonstrutexamples
foreahk2Nofontat3-manifoldsthathavealgebraitorsionoforderkbut
notk 1,andderiveonsequenesforontatsurgeriesonsuhmanifolds.
TheappendixbyMihaelHuthingsgivesanalternativeproofofourobordism
obstrutionsindimensionthreeusingarenementoftheontatinvariantinEm-
beddedContatHomology.
1.Introdution
1.1.Main results.Sympletieldtheory(SFT)isaverygeneraltheoryofholo-
morphiurvesinsympletimanifoldswhihwasoutlinedbyEliashberg,Givental
andHofer[EGH00℄,andwhoseanalytialfoundationsareurrentlyunderdevelop-
mentbyHofer,WysokiandZehnder,f.[Hof℄. Itontainsasspeialasesseveral
theoriesthathavebeenshowntohavepowerfulonsequenesinontattopology|
notablyontathomologyandGromov-Wittentheory|butthemoreelaboratestru-
tureof\full"SFThasyettondappliation,asitisusuallyfartooompliatedto
ompute. Ourgoalhereistointrodueanumerialinvariant,whihweallalge-
braitorsion,thatisextratedfromthefullSFTalgebraandwhosenitenessgives
obstrutionstotheexisteneofsympletillingsandexatsympletiobordisms.
Algebraitorsionisdenedinalldimensions,andweillustrateitseetivenessby
provingexpliitnonexisteneresultsforexatsympletiobordismswhoseendsare
ertainpresribednonllableontat3-manifolds,seeCorollary1below.Tothebest
ofourknowledge,resultsofthistypearenewandseemtobebeyondthepresent
reahofmoretopologiallyorientedmethodssuhasHeegaardFloerhomology.
Fromthepointof viewtaken inthis paper,whihisadaptedfrom[CL09℄and
desribedinmoredetailinx2,theSFTofaontatmanifold(M;)isthehomology
