Parameter

Dive, stomach temperature profile [°C] Abbreviation: DSTP Parameter no: 51216 In accordance with data derived from electronic instruments of several manufacturers we use processed data on the animal’s behaviour in different formats and at varying

resolutions.

Stomach temperature profiles at varying time resolutions contain temperature measurements recorded continuously over periods of up to 12 days inside an endotherm’s stomach. This configuration is optional for Pillbox logger devices manufactured by Driesen & Kern. The units are designed to record internal body temperature and evaluate feeding behaviour by monitoring fluctuations in stomach temperature caused by the ingestion of fish or other “cold” prey. After the food is swallowed, its arrival in the stomach causes a depression or even a precipitous drop in stomach temperature, given that the amount of food is large enough to cause a

substantial temperature gradient, which will then gradually rise again. These instruments are usually operated in combination with behavioural loggers providing data on diving behaviour, optionally collected in tandem with additional data on physiological or locomotory variables.

It is imperative to read the “Further details” section of each event label prior to data retrieval and analyses. The section summarizes the hardware configuration and the user- defined settings upon deployment. For technical specifications on hard- or software configurations of the different satellite transmitters you have to consult the respective manufacturers.
