In den Ancient Syriac Documents relative to tbe earliest
establishment of Christianity in Edessa and the neighbouring Countries
veröffentlichte W. Cureton 1868 auch ,The Acts of Sharbil* aus
dem 15. Jahr Trajans = dem 8. Abgars VII. = 416. Alexanders
in syrischem Text und englischer Übersetzung. Das Stück ist
wiederholt worden von P. Bedjan im ersten Band seiner Acta
Martyrum et Sanctorum (1890 p. 95—119). R. Duval in seiner
preisgekrönten Histoire politique, religieuse et litteraire d'Edesse (Paris 1892) bespricht es S. 129—132.
Cureton führt in den Anmerkungen (p. 178) aus dem Martyro¬
logium Romanum zum 29. Januar an :
Edessae in Syria Sanctorum Martyrum Sarbelii et Barbeae Sororis
ejus, qui ....
Und aus dem Menologium Graecum zum 15. Sept.:
Sarbelius, idolorum saeerdos, unacum sorore Barbaea conversus
est ad fidem Christi per Barsimaeum Edessae Episcopum ....
Er verweist ferner anf Assemani BO I, 331 und die AS zum
29. Januar.
Über den Namen Sharbil schreibt er p. 179:
The etymology of this word, as given by Dr. Land in bis
Anecdota Syriaca p. 20 is unquestionably erroneous. He writes
^^'^-"Nyw est , progenies Dei'; contrabitur e ,3;*. (caeteroquin
adhiberi solet forma fem. Jfco;*,, sed vide Ewaldum in Gramm.
Hebr. edit. IV, p. 326 init.) et^J cum vocali copulante*. The
last syllabe ist^^,o, Bel, the same as we find used in Hebrew,
ia the compound of proper names, for Baal, whose Higb Priest
Sharbil was. The compounds in'^), Hebrew bN, refer to the
God of the Israelites , the true God , and not to the Chaldeans,
worshippers of Baal. The analogy, thereforv. , of and

Jo^_o>. is not applicable. He might bave found an analogy in

Im Schlußband des Thesaurus Syriacus (1897) findet man zu dem
Namen Sp. 4324:
1) martyr Edessenus, commemoratus 29. Jan. mit einigen Beleg¬
stellen ;
2) catholicus Orientis mit zwei Belegstellen.
Icb notierte mir dazu vor längerer Zeit:

Neuerdings stoße ich in Delehaye's Ausgabe des Syna.xarium ecciesiae
Constantinopolitanae (Propylaeum ad Acta Sanctorum Novembris
1902) gleicb beim 5. Sept. (p. 18) auf folgenden Eintrag:

Die Register verweisen unter &ov&arjl noch auf den 4. Sept.
(in G); 10. Dez., 11. Dez. (in F und Fa) und auf einen zweiten
&ov&arjl zum 4. und 5. Aug. [nlrjcLov tov nalat (ov) , der aber
mit dem ersteren identisch sein wird. Auch verweist das Register
noch auf HäQßrjkog und unter 2!. umgekehrt auf &ov&a'ijL
Unter £aqßrjlog finden sich Verweise auf 29. .Tan., 4., 5. Sept., 15. Okt., 4. März.
Am 29. Jan. hat nur Cb einen ausführlicheren Eintrag; am
4. Sept. hat nur Mv ZaQßr'jlov, &a&ovrj). xal Beßaiag, äbnlich am
15. Okt. M Mv Mb Saqßrjlov xal Btßaiag (rfjs uStXcprjg avtov).
Zum 4. März erzählt Mc Sarbels Geschichte. Endlich ist er
unterm 30. Jan. beim Martyrium des Barsimaias im Synaxar von
Konstantinopel als mit seiner Schwester Bebaia bekehrt genannt.
Es ist keine Frage, daß Sarbel^ und Tutael derselbe Mann ist;
aber niemand, der sich bisher mit Sarbel bescbäftigte, hat auf den
zweiten Namen hingewiesen.
Die Schlußlieferung des Thesaurus (1901) verzeichnet, ohne
auf Sarbel zu verweisen, col. 4416 Tutael als nomen virorum:
1) Mart, cuius festum 5. Sept.
2) Tewäth-Tl, oeconomi magnae ecciesiae Edessenae, Jos. Styl. ed.
Wr. 38, 1 = BOI, 271.
Wright scbreibt zu seiner Wiedergabe Tewätb-il (p. 32): Assemani

authority I do not know.
Die vorstehenden Anführungen aus den Synaxarien zeigen,
daß Assemani recht hatte. Um so mehr entstehen aber nun die
Fragen :
1) Was bedeutet der Name Tutagl?
2) Was bedeutet der Name Sarbel?
3) Wie kommt dies Wort dazu, Name einer Göttin und des
edessenischen Priesters zu sein? V
4) Woher stammt die Gleichsetzung Tutaöl - Sarbel ?
Icb kann auf keine dieser Fragen eine bestimmte Antwort geben,
habe sie auch nicht eigens untersucht ; ich wollte mit diesen
Zeilen nur einmal wieder zeigen , wieviel Materialen bereit liegen
und zur Forschung einladen.
1) Mösingor's Buch von 1874 Acta ss. martynjm Edessenorum Sarbelii, Barsimaei ... ex fontibus . . . collecta, explanata atque defensa (Oeniponte, Wagner) ist mir nicht zur Hand. Ob dort ein Hinweis auf Tutael kommt, weiß ich nicht. Den Namen seiner Schwester wiirde man nach der stehenden Form Btßaia für griechisch halten; sie heißt aber in den orientalischen Quellen Babai.

Lexicographical Addenda to the St. Petersburg Lexicons
from the Väsavadattä of Subandhu.

That many of the words and meanings cited in the St. Petersburg
lexicons only on the authority of the Hindu lexicographers are
actually contained in Sanskrit literature is obvious , nor is it less
self-evident tbat tbe vocabulary of Böhtlingk and Roth may be
supplemented by new terms and significations from works either
not read at all or not exhaustively excerpted in the preparation
of their marvellous thesaurus. In the copiousness of its vocabulary,
the smaller lexicon (pw.) is far superior to the larger (PW.)i), as
is but natural in view of its later date, and tbe Wörterbuch in
kürzerer Fassung should, therefore, serve as a basis for lexico¬
graphical addenda.
Lists of additional words and meanings of tbis type are no
new thing. They have recently been prepared by Meyer for the
Kuttanimata and Samayamatrka in his Indische Schelmenbücher,
II, 151—156; by Schmidt and Hertel for the Subhäsitasamdoha
of Amitagati in ZDMG. 59, 266—267, and by myself for the
Viddhadälabharijikä of Räjagekhara in JAOS. XXVI, 7 (comp,
also the brief list for the Sisupälavadha by Fauche , in Une
TStrade, III, app. 1—33). By far the most important, however,
is the Two Lists of Words from Bäna's Harsacarita by Thomas
in JRAS. 1899, 485—517, a list closely analagous to the one
bere presented from the Väsavadattä of Subandhu-), of which I
hope to publish a translation within the current year. A study of
the lexicography of Bäna's Kädambari is still a desideratum.
1) Eighty words and meanings where the only occurrence cited is from the Väsavadattä are given by the pw. as additions to the PW. , in wliich these terms and significations are either not given at all or are quoted only oh the basis of the native lexicons.
2) The numbers attached to the words here recorded refer to the pages and lines of Hall's edition of the Väsavadattä (Calcutta, 1859), and those in parentheses to the pages and lines of Vidyäsägara's edition (Calcutta, 1874).
