Feminist Studies, special issue, 2021-22: 40th Anniversaries of This Bridge Call

Deadline: Jul 1, 2020 Bibiana Obler Call for Content

Feminist Studies: 40th Anniversaries of This Bridge Called My Back and All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men, But Some of Us Are Brave

In the foreword to the first edition of This Bridge Called My Back (1981), Toni Cade Bambara wrote: “Quite frankly, This Bridge needs no Foreword; it is the Afterward that will count.” And what an impactful afterward it has been. But Some of Us Are Brave, published the following year in 1982, also ushered in nothing less than what Audre Lorde called “a new era” in women's studies.

Honoring of the power and longevity of these two collections, the journal Feminist Studies will devote a special issue in 2021-2022 marking the 40th anniversaries of This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (eds. Cherríe Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa, 1981) and All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men, But Some of Us Are Brave: Black Women's Studies (eds. Gloria T. Hull, Patricia Bell Scott, Barbara Smith, 1982).

We invite contributions of three kinds :

1) Short pieces (3000 words) in the genres that these collections exemplify: creative, urgent, per- sonal theoretical writing that can reach a range of readers, addressing questions of social justice.

2) Full length papers (10,500 words) analyzing the institutional transformations that these two texts generated and/or continue to generate.

3) Concrete reflective essays (3000-5000 words) about the pedagogical uses of these texts and the changing responses of students over the decades.

For essays on art and visual culture, "short pieces" are probably the best format. It would be won- derful to feature art by emerging or established contemporary artists in this context.

Please submit it by July 1, 2020 to submit@feministstudies.org. Inquiries can be directed to the journal's editorial director Ashwini Tambe at atambe@umd.edu. Details about our journal's history and content can be found at http://www.feministstudies.org/aboutfs/history.html

Feminist ideas can help guide us as we move through this crisis. Our journal can be a potential home for your new work that contends with the current moment and outlines the paths ahead.

Our anticipated special issue on Feminism and Capitalism (2021, vol 47:1) would be an especially good venue for scholarly or activist commentaries on feminist responses to the COVID-19 pan- demic. We welcome 1500-3000-word pieces from locations around the globe that take up the implications of this pandemic for feminism analyses of capitalism. Our original call for papers on feminism and capitalism highlighted our interest in the crises of care and social reproduction, on non-material labor and work, risk and debt, bioeconomies, and on the Anthropocene and environ- mental destruction. Work along these angles would be an especially good fit.

Due date for commentaries: July 15, 2020. Please send it to submit@feministstudies.org
