Caricatures from the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune (1870-1871)

Caricatures from the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune (1870-1871): Call for academ- ic partners in UK HEIs

The British Library is currently looking for academic partners at UK universities for our AHRC Col- laborative Doctoral Partnerships programme to work on a project focusing on the Library’s collec- tion of caricatures from the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. The application dead- line is 22 November 2019 at 17.00

AHRC CDPs provide funding for PhD research drawing on our collections, resources and exper- tise. The research is co-supervised by the Library and selected academic partners at a UK universi- ty or Higher Education Institute (HEIs). Please note that the British Library has an allocation for three studentships from the AHRC for this round of the CDP programme. Consequently, only three of the four advertised projects will be developed into CDPS and allocated funding.

The project will draw on the Library’s extensive collection of caricatures and images as well as on other rare complementary material to explore representations of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune and the collecting, distribution and reach of the sets of caricatures.

The caricatures lend themselves to research in the fields of history, cultural memory, French and German studies, art history, cultural studies, gender studies, war studies, urban history, book histo- ry, the history of collections, etc. The project will add a new dimension to our understanding of several processes at key moments in French (and German) history: the development of national identities, the creation of a modern popular culture, and the development of caricature as a medi- um.

The application deadline is 22 November 2019.

Please feel free to get in touch with the BL supervisors (Sophie.Defrance@bl.uk <mailto:Sophie.De- france@bl.uk> ; Teresa.Vernon@bl.uk <mailto:Teresa.Vernon@bl.uk> ) if you would like to discuss your ideas with us before applying or if you have any questions.
