CAA 2003 Panel: Negotiating the Boundaries of American Modernism: The New Negro Renaissance as Case Study

Location: New York, United States Call for Papers Deadline: 2002-05-13

provided by H-Announce, http://www.h-net.msu.edu

We are seeking one or two additional papers for a panel at the College Art Association Annual Conference in February 2003. This panel explores the lasting impact of visual artists in the moment of American cultural renewal understood broadly as the New Negro Renaissance. Though artists such as Aaron Douglas, Archibald Motley, and Augusta Savage seldom figure centrally in mainstream studies of modern American art, their work reflects and constitutes modernist form and purpose. Is the concept of American modernism sufficiently flexible to include this art, or is some other conceptualization

necessary

We invite papers on any aspect of New Negro Renaissance art and artists. Possible topics include: Defining modern American art through the work of New Negro artists; the role of the visual

arts in shaping the New Negro Renaissance movement; the significance of the position of artist as teacher; and the meaning of recent

exhibitions and collection

purchases. Interdisciplinary papers encouraged.
