InthisopinionpaperwepromotetheideaofanopendialoguetotakeplacefromwithintheSustainableFutures journalthatwilloffertheopportunitytoawiderangeofactorsandstakeholderstopresenttheirideas,concerns andworriesonavarietyofissuesrelevantandrelatedtoaspectsofsustainability.Suchanopen-endedapproach willhelpovercomeopposingdynamicsthatcurrentlycaterforpolarizationandasaresulttothesegregation withinthescientificcommunityandthesocietyatlarge.Onthepositiveside,thereisawidespectrumofam- bitious,game-changinganddisruptiveinitiativesthatcanbetakenfromacademia,fromtheindustry,fromthe activists’movementsandthecitizensatlarge,whichwillaimtoincreaseourfreedomsandnotreducethem.

1. Awidefieldofopposingdynamics

Pre-ChristmasperiodandBlackFridayofferagoodopportunityto discussissuesrelatedtosustainableconsumption[1–3].Apartfromthe casethatthis maybe aparadoxasconsumptionpresupposeslackof sustainabilityatallorkeepingthisatanecessaryminimum,wemayall beusedtotermslikeimmaterialandintangiblegoodsorservices– so wherevertherearegoodsandservices,theremayalsobeconsumption aswell.Discussionssuchasthecalculationofthecarbonfootprintof agooglesearchisnotnewasseenin[4]andsparkeddiscussionsand furtherresearchasseenin[5–7].

Whatmayappearasaworryingphenomenonisthatthereappear trendsinthesocietyandtheeconomythattriggeropposingdynamicstostake- holdersandthesocietyatlarge.Whileforinstancewemayincreaseour WebandInternetuseandsearchrates,wetrytoteachourselvestogive upflights (whatwerefertoasflyingor flightshame).Furthermore, whattheCEOofamajorairlinecompany suggestedfortheincrease ofthepricessothatnoflightticketscouldbepurchasedforunder100 SwissFrancs(about91Euros,712ChineseYuanor101USdollars)may bewelcomedasavoiceofsensibilityandreason[8].

Theideaofintroducing informationsystemsatthecorporateand organizationallevelthatwilltakecareofmonitoringandreportingen- vironmentalorothersustainability-relatedandsustainability-relevant aspectsisalsonotnewasonecanseein[9–11]thoughthereisalways thepossibilitythatthismaynothavetakenoff asoftodaybecauseofa lackofpoliticalimperativesoadéjà vutowhathappenedincorporate financialreportingwiththeintroductionoftheSarbanes–OxleyActof 2002[12].

Theissueisthatlegislationandregulationmaycarefortheabso- luteminimumincompliance – andhencetheymaynever leadusto

innovations.Whatwemaynowratherbadlyneedisthatawidespectrum ofambitious,game-changinganddisruptiveinitiativeswillbesparkedfrom academia,fromtheindustry,fromtheactivists’movementsandthecitizens atlarge,whichwillaimtoincreaseourfreedomsandnotreducethem.

Thecurrentlyexistingloopholeinthelegislationandtheregulation internationallyisourbiggestopportunity– wehavetoseizeitbefore someimprovised(asweallknow,evengreatideascanberuinedby committeethinking),autoschediasticandad-hocapproachwillbesug- gestedforadoption.Weratherallofushaveevidenceofhowthisworks forreducingasubjecttowhatisconsideredasacommondenominator.

Theapplicationoflegislationandregulationasironcorsetsshowsthat doesn’thelpinnovationandcompetitiveness– itratherhelpscreatedis- economies.Globalisationaswenowadaysexperienceitmayhaveits originsasacost-reductionsaga– atthattimevaluecreationmayhave notbeenanissueatall.

1.1. Roleofteachingandneedforaction

Fromourownaccumulatedexperiencesofseveralyearsofteaching andresearchactivitieswithourstudentsweareawarethatlearningis notaunidirectionalactivityforthestudentsandjustaserviceprovi- sionfromthetutor’sside.Forteachingtobesustainableitencompasses alsoalearningdimensionforthetutorsthemselves.Asweallknow,in researchthequestionsmatterusuallymorethantheanswers;thelatter may(andareusually)wrong-whileaquestion,evenanaiveseeming one,maywaitforyearstogetagoodorcorrectanswer.Mostdiscussions forchangemanagementthattakeplaceincompaniesandorganisations takeafinger-pointingformandnurturegapsorschisms,withoutcon- tributinginapositivewaytothecorporateororganizationalculture.So, thereshouldbenodoubtleftabouttheirinherentlackofsustainability.

Toavoidawrongreadingoftheabove,wearenotsupportingthe ideaofdoingnothing– quitetheoppositeandasitwillbemoreexplic- itlymadebelow,thereisneedforactionnow.

1.2. Opendialogue

Whatwesuggestisthatadialogueshallopen,andwesuggestthat thiswill takeplacefrom withintheSustainable Futures journalthat willoffertheopportunitytoawiderangeofactorsandstakeholdersto presenttheirideas,concernsandworries.

Sustainabilitydoesnotcompriseaneconomiconlydimension.Phe- nomenarelatedtoradicalizationinthesociety,theemergenceofhate speechinthesocialmediaandnetworksareveryrelevantastheyre- latetoour understandingofwhat maykeepustogetherorhelpsus notdisintegrateandfallapartasasociety.Toleranceisaratherold- fashionedtermandqualitybutmayhavecontributedtosustainability morethanwemaybeabletoconceive.Fakenewsisalsoadrivingforce thatwealsoneedtoconsiderinrelationtosustainability:theirgrowing influenceonsocialmediaandtheWebshouldalertusfortheirpossi- bleeffectsonconsumerattitudeandbrandreputation.Climatechange shouldnotworryusmorethanthefactthatmanypeopleidentifythemselves asclimatechangedeniers.

Oncethisdialogueopens,weshallneedtoreflectandassessallopin- ionsthatwillcomefromthedifferentsidesandpartsofthesociety.

Someof themmaybe– wearesureonthis – heavilybiasedand deeplypolarizing.Ignoringthemisnotagoodideaatall– firstlybe- causeitisnot… sustainable.Takingintoaccountawidegamutofex- ceptionsmaymakedifficulttobuildrules.Inthatcasewemayneed toreconsiderwhat isthevaluein generalorthevaluehereandnow ofstrictrules.However,onemayalsoseeachallengetherefromare- searchperspective:somethingthatthehumanmindmaybeunableto conceptualiseorperceive,mayberelativelyeasyortrivialoncecompu- tationalthinkingisappliedandthesupportofAIandmachinelearning isbroughtonboard.

Itisacommondiseaseinacademicandresearchcircleswhatone callsparalysisbyanalysis.Andthereisundoubtedlyagreatcontribution thatcomesfromindividualsandgroupsofactivists.GretaThunbergsuc- ceededinmobilizingorganisationsandstakeholdersandinspiredmil- lionsofpeopleandespeciallytheyoung(er)ones.However,andstrictly speaking,herapproachwasaratherpopulistone– butwemayagree thatthoughpopulist,itwasforagoodpurpose.Isn’tthispossiblynotifying theopportunitytocapitalizeonthefuelthatonemayfindinpopulist movementsandusethemforgoodpurposeaswell?

1.3. Responsibilityofacademicinstitutionstoexpandcivicspaceforaction

Universitiesaresupposedtoteachyoungpeoplequalitiesthatthey mayneitherpossessnorcaretobuildoracquire.Thedyingartofdis- cussionwithpeoplethathaveadifferentopinionorideologyisleftto thefew.Hoipolloiprefertonot‘playtheballbuttheman’.

Afterall,anydiscussiononsustainabilitytakestheformofanopen- endedchallenge,similartoajourneytoIthaka:thejourneytosustain- ability,inallitsexcessesandrollercoaster-likemanifestations,offersan unprecedentedopportunitytorevisitone’svaluesandforimprovingdif- ferenttypesofintelligenceofourorganizations(emotional,digital,en- vironmental,etc.).Therearenumerousexamplesofcompaniesshouting withwholepageadvertisementsthattheycareforsustainability,while everythingtheydospeaksfortheopposite.Sometimesagreatpartof

theworkweneedtoundergotowardsmoresustainablefuturesforall doesn’tneedanypompousgrandchallengesinvolvingAIorBigData, andamilddoseofcommonsenseandgoodwillsuffices.

RankingsastheonesthatappearintheGlobalCompetitivenessIndex [13]andtheGlobalInnovationIndex[14]bringclosetogethercoun- tries thatexhibitextremebigdifferences inmany aspectsofsociety, economy,culture,andinsomecasesalsotheideologiesandtheruleof law.However,theunifyingelementthatbringsthemclosetogetheris theimperativeofstayingcompetitiveandinnovativewhateverthecost maybe.Societies,independentonhowburdenedthesemaybefroma varietyofreasons,possessthequalitytosolveproblemsefficientlyonce theyadmittheyareimportant.

Fortheformofthedialoguethatwesuggesttakingplaceweare confidentthattheeditors,theeditorialcommitteeaswellasthereaders oftheSustainableFuturesjournalshallbeabletoreflectandsharetheir viewsandmakeithappen.Thegainswillbemanyandinvariouslevels.

Asystematizationoftheresultsofthedialoguemaynotbegivenprior- ityatthisstage:noneedtobuildtaxonomiesthatnoonewillcaretouse orconsiderintheiractions.Whatisnowimportantistotakeaninclu- sive,all-embracingapproachthatwillreachaudiencesthatmaynotbe informedatallorevenbeenconsideredandtowhichtheopportunity willbenowgiventoincludesustainabilityaspartoftheiragendas.
