New York, Feb 10–13, 2021 Deadline: May 18, 2020 Shira Gottlieb, 6522418
This call is for submission of presentations that if selected, will be included in a full panel propos- al for the CAA 2021 conference
(Re)Presenting the Old: Aging and Old Age in the Arts
Organizer: Shira Gottlieb, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
Aging and old age are not solely biological processes but also cultural and social constructions.
For example, while the characteristics of an elderly person in ancient times were a symbol of wis- dom and experience, the recent Coronavirus Pandemic has labeled the elderly population as vuln- erable and excluded.
This session aims to examine representations of aging throughout history. What are the narrative roles of old age in the visual culture? How is old age represented in different cultures and times?
How have political and medical processes affected visual expressions of old age? What is the cor- relation between artists’ age and their depiction of aging? How are elderly figures represented in an intergenerational society?
Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Stereotypes of old age
· Identification with the elderly
· Fear or disguise from aging
· Exclusion of elders
· The elder as the Other
· Self-portraiture at an old age
· Aging parents of the artists
· Aesthetics of aging
