Ed Ruschas Streets of Los Angeles-Archiv
Mehr als 500.000 Fotografien, hunderte Kontaktbögen, eine Vielzahl an Dokumenten und Notizen – Ed Ruschas Streets of Los Angeles-Archiv birgt eine unüberschaubare Menge an Informationen.
Im Rahmen des Ed Ruscha Streets of Los Angeles Project des Getty Research Institute, Los Ange- les (GRI) wurde seit 2012 ein Großteil von Ruschas fotografischer Dokumentation der Stadt Los Angeles digitalisiert. Nach über fünf Jahrzehnten werden diese Bilder erstmals für eine breite Öff- entlichkeit wie für den Künstler selbst digital zugänglich gemacht.

Eine Annäherung daran bietet "(Not Nearly) Every Picture": Die Website wurde von Bachelor- und Masterstudierenden des Instituts für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin entwickelt. Unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Eva Ehninger hatten die Student/innen während des ver- gangenen digitalen Sommersemesters Zugriff auf das bisher unveröffentlichte Bildarchiv des US- amerikanischen Konzeptkünstlers Ed Ruscha.
In der Auseinandersetzung mit dieser riesigen Datenmenge sind eigenständige Fragestellungen und Perspektiven entstanden: Zum Format des Archivs und seiner medialen Transformation, zur Ästhetik der Fotografien als einzelnen Bildern gegenüber dem Gesamtarchiv, sowie zur Darstel- lung, Dokumentation und Repräsentation der Stadt Los Angeles und ihrer Bewohner/innen.
Die Ergebnisse dieser wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung wurden von den Studierenden für die Website in Form von zwölf Essays aufbereitet, die nachdenklich, kreativ und kritisch mit Ruschas Projekt, das der Künstler seit über fünfzig Jahren fortführt, in Dialog treten.

notes - Ed Ruscha's Streets of Los Angeles archive contains a huge number of information. Since 2012, a large part of Ruscha's photographic documentation of the city of Los Angeles has been digitized as part of the Ed Ruscha Streets of Los Angeles Project of the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles (GRI). After more than five decades, these images are being made digitally accessib- le to a broad public as well as to the artist himself.

"(Not Nearly) Every Picture" is a first approach to this archive: The website was developed by Bachelor and Master students from the Institute of Art and Visual History, Humboldt-University, Berlin. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Eva Ehninger, the students had access to the previously undisclosed image archive of the US-American concept artist Ed Ruscha throughout the past digi- tal semester.
Confronted with this enormous mass of visual data, the students developed their own research questions: concerning the format of the archive and its digital transformation, the aesthetics of the photographs as single images and as elements of the entire archive, or the imaging, documen- tation and representation of the city of Los Angeles and its residents.
The twelve essays on the website are the result of the students’ scholarly work on the archive.
They enter into a thoughtful, creative and critical dialogue with Ruscha’s project, which has been an ongoing process for the artist for more than fifty years.
