Himyaritic Sepulchral monument.

The descriptions of the Himyaritic sepulchral monument con¬
tained in the Z. d. D. M. G. vol/xXIV, pp. 178, 200, and 237,
are all more or less inaccurate. 1 have now before me a squeeze
of the slab, brought by Mr. Poole of the British Museum from
Alexandria, of which that gentleman and Dr. Birch have kindly
permitted me to make use.
The stone is about 18 English inches in height by 11 inches
in breadth , and divided into two compartments , the upper one of
which is excellently reproduced in the Zeitschrift. The lower com¬
partment (see p. 200) represents a figure reclining on a fourfooted
couch or bedstead, with the feet turned towards the right. The
head is supported by the right hand. At the head of the bed, on
the left, stands a single attendant, who helps with her left hand
to support the head of the recumbent figure. There is an animal
in the background, as in tbe upper compartment, but on the right
of the picture.
With regard to the inscription, both lines are correctly re¬
produced in the lithograph, p. 178. The person who copied it for
Mr. Vaux (p. 200) evidently read the Himyaritic characters, like
Greek or Latin, from left to right, which explains the position of
the four letters ■p-'bi in the lithograph HI b. The meaning seems
to me to be: „The image (or likeness) of Gh., the daughter of M.;
and may 'Athtar hinder (o r repel) him who shall [try to] break it."
The prayer of the second line is directed against violators of the
tomb or injurers of the monument.
I have fortunately been able, within the last two or three
days, to inspect Mr. Kirk's three inscriptions, nos. VI, VII, and
VIII. Professor Levy is mistaken in speaking of the first two as
fragments (p. 201). On the contrary, all three are entire tablets,
aud every letter is quite sharp and clear. The rubbings, taken
hurriedly at Manchester by Mr. Franks, are, I am sorry to say,
defective in several points.

In no. VI the letter O should in every case be Q), so that
the inscription reads
In no. VII there are also some corrections to be made. In
line 2, the penult letter is pj ; in line 3 , the antepenult letter is
, and tbe last letter ^ ; in line 5 , the second letter is '
and the last IJ| .
The rubbing of no. VIII has turned out better, but the strokes
forming each letter should always be connected. The eighth letter
of line 1 tJ- The first letter of line 5 is also Q, but the
tenth is n . In line 12, the sixth letter should have a crooked
shaft , ^ , instead of a straight oue. In line 13, the crossbars
of the eighth letter should be slanting, Jsj . Lastly, in line 14,
the two perpendicular strokes after the antepenult letter are cor-

Being neither antiquarian nor palaeographer, I am reluctant
to express any opinion about these three inscriptions ; but 1 may mention
that their genuineness has been suspected by at least one good
authority. It is desirable therefore that they should be more
closely examined

glaubt, sich noch um das zweite Bild kümmern zu müssen, da er nur auf die

Ueber die Auffindung der Moabitischen Inschrift
des Königs Mesa.

Ende August des Jahres 1808 kam der mir befreundete bei
der englischen Mission angestellte Prediger Klein von einer llund-
reise um das todte Meer nach Jerusalem zurück, und den folgenden
Tag schon erstattete er mir im Beisein von drei andern Freunden
Bericht darüber, wobei er mich namentlich auf einen Stein auf¬
merksam machte, welchen die Beduinen ihm in der Nähe von Diban,
dem alten Dibon, mit der ausdrücklichen Bemerkung gezeigt hatten,
dass er der erste Europäer sei, der Kunde davon erhalte. Nach
seiner Angabe, wie er sie in seinem Tagebuch verzeichnet hatte,
war er 3 Spannen breit, 5 Spannen lang und IV2 Spanne dick
(genau 70 Centimeter breit, 1, 13 Meter lang, 35 Centimeter dick),
wahrscheinlich Basalt, und hatte eine sehr deutliche Inschrift vou
33 Zeilen, sehr gut erhalten, uur am obern Theile waren einige
Zeilen etwas verwischt. Auf solchen Fund nicht vorbereitet hatle
er kein Papier zum Abklatschen mitgenommen; und, da er bald
wieder abzureisen genothigt war, konnte er auch keine Abschrift
davon machen, sondern kopirte nur einige Zeichen, die ich sogleich
als phünicische erkannte. Mit der nächsten Post, den 2'J ten August,
schrieb ich darüber nach Berlin, und bat, weil ich Gefahr im Ver¬
zug glaubte, um telegraphische Antwort, ob die Direction der
köuiglichen Museen geneigt sein würde, für die Erwerbung dieses
Steins nöthigenfalls 100 Nap. zu zahlen. Schon den löten Septbr.
d. J. erhielt ich von H. Lepsius ein Telegramm, wornach ich er¬
mächtigt wurde, diese Summe dazu zu verwenden.
Um eine zu fürchtende Concurrenz zu vermeiden , bat ich so¬
wohl den Pred. Klein als auch die drei andern Mitwisser, niemand
etwas davon zu sagen. Einer derselben aber gestand mir, dass er
schon mit dem ersten englischen Geistlichen bei der Mission unter
den Juden, Dr. Barclay, davon gesprochen habe. Wahrscheinlich
hat dieser es dem Cap. Warren mitgetheilt, wie aus dessen Bericht
hervorzugehen scheint. — Beide aber waren discret genug, keinen
