The Legacy of Surrealism (MSA 5, Birmingham UK)

Raymond Spiteri MSA 5: MODERNIST CULTURES

25-28 September, 2003, Birmingham, UK The Legacy of Surrealism

Co-ordinator: Raymond Spiteri, University of North Dakota

Although the Second World War is often taken to signal the decline of surrealism as an avant-garde movement, surrealism continued to exist after the war not only as an organized movement but also as an historically decisive experience. It has continued to influence a broad range of

endeavors from critical theory and psychoanalysis to contemporary art and gender studies. This seminar interrogates the contemporaneity of

surrealism and invites contributions focused on legacy of surrealism as an aspect of our modernity. Topics can range from surrealism's influence on theory, surrealism as an interlocutor in cultural dialogue, surrealism and the question of gender, to the re-reading of surrealism after modernism.

Call for participants in a peer seminar on the Legacy of Surrealism I have just been advised that there is still room available in the peer seminar I am organizing for the 2003 Modernist Studies Association conference. This year¹s conference is located in Birmingham, UK, during 25-28 September.

For more information on the conference see <http://msa.press.jhu.edu>

Seminars are small-group discussion sessions (of no more than 15 people) for which participants write brief "position papers" that are read and circulated prior to the conference. Seminars generate lively and valuable exchange during the conference and in some cases have created a network of scholars who have continued to work together. Further, the peer seminar model allows most conferees to seek financial support from their institutions as they educate themselves and their colleagues on subjects of mutual interest.

To participate in this seminar you need to send an email message to Samantha Skinner at <sjskinner@yahoo.com> by June 25, 2003 and include summer contact information. Or visit the MSA 5 website and follow the instructions. You may also nominate for other seminars being held at this years conference.

For more information on this seminar contact Raymond Spiteri at
