Announcement of an open position at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technische Universität Wien for an Assistant Professorship (Tenure Track) in

“Risk assessment of water hazards”

The Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technische Universität Wien is announcing the position for a fulltime Assistant Professorship (Tenure Track) in “Risk assessment of water hazards”, expected to begin on 1st February 2017.

The work contract is initially limited to six years. The candidate and TU Wien can agree upon a tenure evaluation, which when positive, opens the possibilty to change the position to Associate Professor with an unlimited contract. The assistant professorship will be associated with the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Ressources Management at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, TU Wien.

The position involves research and teaching in the field of risk assessment in water management, particularly in connection with extreme natural events such as floods and droughts and their impact on the entire water management system. A holistic approach is required that examines the interactions of the system components. The profile of the position includes research on and development of innovative concepts of risk assessment that enable efficient and sustainable use of water resources and management of water hazards in the future. Successful candidates have experience in several of the following areas:

- Analysis of process controls of risk-related events in water management, in particular floods and droughts, as well as evaluation of their probabilities;

- Analysis of the feedbacks between the components of complex water − management systems (social, economic, hydrological and technical components) by socio-hydrological methods;

- Development of statistical methods for using and combining different sources of information for estimating risks in water management;

- Analysis of temporal changes of water-related risks (e.g. floods) and attribution of the observed changes to the process controls;

- Analysis of the spatial interactions of extreme events and spatial combination of the probabilities of such events.

In teaching, the position represents all areas of risk assessment in water management for the Bachelor and Master degree programmes in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Willingness to attract external funding and to cooperate with other research groups at the TU Wien in research and teaching is expected.

Requirements:

• Adequate completed Austrian or equivalent foreign university education with relevant PhD

• Scientific publications in international in specilalized literature

• Experience in teaching (lecturing and presentation skills)

• National and international research cooperations

• Experience in external funding aquisition

• Scientific work outside of TU Wien
