Der vielseitige Linguist, Ethnologe und Diplomat Ferrand war auf Ma¬
dagascar spezialisiert. Am 22.1.1864 in Marseille geboren, studierte er Ma-
laisch an der Ecole des langues orientales in Paris und erwarb darin sein
Diplom. Dann trat er in den konsularischen Dienst ein. Seit 1897 war er
in verschiedenen Stellungen auf Madagaskar stationiert, wurde im Fe¬
bruar 1897 Vize-Konsul in Bender-Busir (Persien), aber bereits im Septem¬
ber desselben Jahres nach Thailand versetzt. 1900 wurde er Vizekonsul in
Rest (Persien), 1904 Konsul in Stuttgart und 1909 Handelsattache für die
deutschsprachigen Länder sowie Belgien, Niederlande und die Schweiz.
Während eines Zwischenaufenthaltes in Paris verteidigte er seine Disser¬
tation: Essai de phonétique comparée du malais et des dialectes malgaches
[par] Gabriel Ferrand (Paris 1909. XLVIII, 347 S.). Schon vorher hatte er sich
in einer Reihe von Publikationen mit Madagaskar beschäftigt, wie Contes
populaires malgaches (1893), Les Musulmans à Madagascar et aux îles Co¬
mores 1811-1902, Les Çomalis (1903), Essai de grammaire malgache (1903).
1914 wurde Ferrand zum Generalkonsul in New Orleans ernannt; 1918
dem Ministerium zur Verfügung gestellt, ging er 1920 in den Ruhestand. 1 Er
starb am 3.2.1935. Trotz seiner bedeutenden Arbeiten scheint keine größere
wissenschaftliche Würdigung vorzuliegen.
Die beiden hier gebotenen Briefe fügen sich in die in Berthold Laufer 2 :
Kleinere Schriften (Band 3. Stuttgart 1985) publizierten Briefe Ferrands

Prof. J .W. de Jong 4 für den genannten Band der Kleineren Schriften zur
Verfügung gestellt, konnten aber nicht mehr berücksichtigt werden, da sich
das Werk bereits beim Verlag befand.
Ein gemeinsames Interessengebiet der beiden Gelehrten hat Ferrand in
seinem Werk Relations de voyages et textes géographiques arabes, persans
et turks relarifs à l'Extrême-Orient du Ville au XVII le siècles
5behandelt.
Das Vorwort ist übrigens „Berlin, le 15 août 1912" gezeichnet, wie sich auch
in den Briefen zeigt, daß Ferrand der deutschen Sprache gut mächtig war.
In all diesen Briefen zeigen sich die kollegiale Wertschätzung wie auch
der weite Horizont der beiden Gelehrten.

Many thanks for your amiable letter of December and the indication of the
French works which you kindly recommend me to read. I shall so endeavor
to procure them, and I am sure that I shall greatly enjoy these books.
The Glossdrio Luso-Asiático 6 has no publisher on the title-page. On
the top: Academia das Sciências de Lisboa; below: Coimbra, Imprensa da
Universidade. I received my copy from Luzac in London, but I note that
P. Geuthner, 13 rue Jacob, Paris, announced it in one of his recent book-lists;
he procured for me a copy of Garcia's Colloquios éd. Ficalho 7 , which is a
valuable work, though his commentary does not quite conform to modern
scientific standards. A detailed commentary to this important work would
be an urgent desideratum. It is a great pity that your volume III s which is
ready cannot be printed now; could you not receive some support from the
Société asiatique or from some Government Institution? Dealings with Le¬
roux I have always found exceedingly difficult; we have just been notified

those issued long before the war, by 60 %, so that our Director was obliged
to cancel a large order which he had received. I regret not having yet received
the number of the Journal asiatique, which contains the first instalment of
your K'ouen-louen 9 ; I anticipate it with great pleasure. Your translation of
the Livro dos Pesos by Nunes 10 will doubtless be very useful and interesting.
I wish we had more men like you, men, who are not merely good scholars
(hommes de cabinet), but also gentlemen with a warm and tender heart and
a sympathetic soul, who take an unselfish interest in their friends and all hu¬
man affairs. Yes, I remember little Takakusu 11 , although I have not seen him
for twenty-three years; he spent one semester at Leipsic, while I was there,
and he was a very quiet, modest, and reserved little chap.
While writing, your good letter of Dec. 28 with the photos just lands here
safely. Many, many thanks for your friendly words for my book 12 , which
touch me deeply. Of course, you are kind enough to look upon my work
with the indulgent eyes of a friend; but let us wait till Pelliot is through with
it and his merciless criticism, and I fear not much will be left of my results. 13
Thank you for calling my attention to the misprint Sibäb instead of Sihäb, I
am sorry for it & shall point it out in my Supplementary Notes which I hope
to publish in the near future. I am also obliged for your remarks on Arabic
(Tj, which with your kind permission I shall embody in my Notes. I had no
intention of solving the problem of the Malayan Po-se, but I merely wanted

to place the necessary materials at the disposal of others. I shall be most
happy to see you take up this problem, especially with references to po-se =
Bar°s, Bar's.
The photos of your tiki u are quite satisfactory and answer their purpose.
It is an admirable specimen, and I shall endeavor to at once interest some
„patrons" of the museum in its acquisition. Your characterization of Ameri¬
can life is quite to the point. Quite often I feel almost discouraged here; par¬
ticularly in Chicago there is little intellectual life. Many people here consist
merely of a stomach to which they pander as their god, not to speak of dol-
larism which rules everything; but on the other hand there is also a minor¬
ity band of truly cultivated and spiritual men and women who merely need
guidance to turn their wealth to a good purpose.
Maspero's 15 appointment to the Chinese chair at the Collège de France is
a gratifying event and an excellent choice. I wrote him at least three times
during the last years, also sent him my articles, but never received a reply
from him. Maybe he was too busy, maybe (and there are many of this type)
he does not wish to correspond.
Is it very difficult to procure the ancient French accounts of Madagas¬
car? I am anxious to look them over for my study of American plants and
to ascertain particularly at what time maize, tobacco, pineapple (ananas),
sweet potato, papaya, guava, etc., were introduced there. I presume that Fla-
court's Histoire 16 may contain some references. 17 I am just reading François
Leguat's Voyages et aventures 18 (1708) which interests me very much. Did

of India I know of.

I am pleased to receive your good letter of May 7, but profoundly regret to
learn that you have been suffering from the grippe all this winter and were
the victim of an automobile accident. My best wishes for a speedy recovery!
We look down on primitive tribes and past ages for their human sacrifices
and other barbarities, and in this U. S. we kill about 50,000 people a year in
automobile, railway and factory accidents, in Chicago alone about a thou¬
sand a year only with automobiles, we might say, in honor of the god of
traffic and speed.
No, you shall not purchase any of our museum publications, you are too
good a friend and have done so many favors to us that we shall gladly present
to you any of our publications that you desire. I have requested the director
of the Museum to send you the whole series of leaflets with our compli¬
ments.
I shall be very glad to receive the Introduction à l'astronomie nautique
arabe, and if possible, to write a compte-rendu of it. M. Geuthner sent me
in your name the Ibn Fadl Allah Al-'Omarî by Gaudefroy-Demombynes 20 ,
it is an excellent piece of work teeming with many valuable scientific data!

book entitled The Prehistory of Aviation 21 in which I tried to record every¬
thing done by Oriental nations in the line of aviation. I trace, e.g., the con¬
nection of our aeroplanes with chinese kites, the idea of airships in ancient
India, and have a long story of carrier pigeons. You will, of course, receive
a copy in due time.
Linton 22 has brought back wonderful collections from Madagascar and a
mass of novel and excellent information. He is busy preparing a report of his
results and exhibiting his material.
