HOW TO USE MICROWORLD

Despite its allure. the world of microcomputing can be an unwelcome place for the uninformed. New microcomputers, applications and systems software as well as peripheral de- vices are announced at a whirlwind rate. Keeping pace with this levcl of activity is a difficult, frustrating task. As a rcsult, purchase decisions are often based on outdatcd or incomplete information. To address this information explosion, AUERBACH has creatcd Micro World: Software/Hardware Selection Guide. Supplemented monthly, it is a comprehen- sive source of current, accurate information about both micro- computer software and hardware.

HOW DOES MICRO WORLD HELP?

MicroWorld's primary sections-Applications Software, Systems Software, Microcomputers, and Peripherals- encompass the major components of any microcomputer sys- tem. This helps ensure that purchase decisions are made in the context of an integrated, compatible system rather than on a piecemeal basis.

In addition, the types of reports contained in MicroWorld have been specifically designed for particular phases of software/hardware selection.

Software Selection

Aiding in the software selection process are three types of reports:

• Compatibility Matrix-In each Applications and Systems software section, a compatibility matrix cross-references software packages to microcomputer operating systems;

the matrix helps you determine the operating systems on which each application and systems package runs. In the microcomputer hardware section, a compatibility matrix cross-references operating systems to microcomputers;

this matrix provides you a quick overview of the operat- ing systems supported by each microcomputer.

• Features Matrix-In each Applications Software section, a features matrix cross-references every package to a set of features defined specifically for each application cate- gory. Using this matrix, you can readily compare the characteristics of all the packages in each application category.

• Softwarc Product Summary-Evcry applications and sys- tems softwarc package in MicroWorld is outlined in a Softwarc Product Summary. Thc summary briefly ex- plains the major characteristics of the packagc, including the latest pricing information, hardware system require- ments, and the vendor's address and telephone number.

This information helps you narrow your choice of pack- ages. Cross-references at the end of each summary indi- cate where each package can be found in the compatibili- ty and features matrices.

Hardware Selection

Four types of reports are used in selecting hardware:

• Microcomputer Ratings Guides-Thcse guides lend a quantitative perspective to the microcomputer selection process. Developcd for such major application areas as word processing and spreadsheet analysis, the Ratings Guides match cach major micro against a well-defined set of system features and characteristics and assign weighted quality points in each category. The sum of the quality points is divided by the price of a typical configuration for each system and then multiplied by 1,000 to give a whole number. The resultant quality rating is a useful in- dicator of the system's capability/price ratio.

• Hardware Specifications Chart-All microcomputers and each type of peripheral are featured in separate specifica- tions charts. Using criteria appropriate to the type of hardware it treats, each chart provides a quick reference and side-by-side comparison of competing micros and pe- ripherals. The Microcomputer Systems Specifications Chart, for example, features more than 40 key criteria, including system availability, random-access memory, system capacities, input/output control, data communica- tions, software, and pricing.

• Specifications Chart Guide-This report precedes each specifications chart and provides clear, concise defini- tions for each criterion found in the accompanying chart.

• Hardware Product Brief-This report provides informa- tion on the important system characteristics of major mi- crocomputers. Included in the reports are typical system uses, memory and disk storage capacities, software offer- ings, system configurations, and prices. This information allows you to screen micros according to their character- istics and costs. Product briefs are listed alphabetically by vendor name and include vendor addresses and telephone numbers.

MicroWorld Indices

To help you quickly find the information contained in its various reports, MicroWorld has a master index, as well as indices for each section. Updated quarterly with interim monthly supplements, the master index is a comprehensive reference to all the information in Micro World. The scction indices, located immediatcly behind thc section tabs, are con- venient subsets of the master index. Each scction indcx pro- vides a handy guide to the section; they are updated whenever information is added to or removed from a section.

Major entries in the master and section indices are accompa- nied by a lO-digit number indicating the section, report type, and page number(s) of the information.

WHO BENEFITS FROM MICRO WORLD?

Because it covers not only microcomputers but several cate- gories of software and peripherals, MicroWorld is useful whether you own a micro or are in the market for one. If you currently have a system, Micro World can help you expand that system's capabilities and extend its applications. Or, if you are planning to purchase a system, MicroWorld can ensure that your selection process is thorough and systematic.

Case 1-Purchasing a System

Step 1: Determine Your Application Needs Because a microcomputer is merely a tool, it is essential to carefully define the applications for which it will be used.

Once you have done that (or perhaps to stimulate your think- ing along those lines), tum to the MicroWorld table of con- tents. There you will find more than a dozen categories of ap- plications software from which to begin your search.

Step 2: Identify Your Application's Major Features and Select Appropriate Packages

Suppose, for example, you have determined that word pro- cessing is one of your major applications. Tum to the features matrix in the Word Processing section. The packages are list- ed (alphabetically by vendor) in the left-hand column of the matrix. Charted across the top are the features a word process- ing package should provide. After identifying the minimum number of features a package must have to satisfy your appli- cation, scan the matrix for those packages that meet your needs.

Step 3: Review the Characteristics and Pricing of the Candidate Packages

Once you have selected candidate packages, consult the sec- tion's index (just behind the Word Processing tab) to locate the packages' product summaries. These contain current pric- ing information as well as the address and phone number of the packages' vendors. This information enables you to nar- row your choices even further. Note the cross-reference at the end of each product summary to the compatibility matrix;

these page numbers are needed in the next step of the selection process.

Step 4: Identify Operating Systems Compatible with the Candidate Packages

Before you can begin your search for a microcomputer, you must first determine which operating systems support your candidate packages. For this information, consult the Word Processing Compatibility Matrix. Using the page numbers from the product summaries' cross-references, find your pack- ages in the left-hand column of the appropriate matrix pages.

(Remember, the listings are alphabetized by vendor.) For each package, read across the columns headed by the major operat- ing systems to see which is (are) compatible with the packages.

Step 5: Determine the Microcomputers that Support the Suitable Operating Systems

You are now ready to begin your search for a microcomput- er. In the Microcomputers section, a compatibility matrix

HOW TO USE MICRO WORLD

cross-references major operating systems to the micros cov- ered in the section. Locate the operating systems (at the top of the matrix) that you identified as compatible with your candi- date packages. By reading down those columns and across the rows containing bullets, you will discover the microcomputers on which the packages will run.

Step 6: Review the Characteristics and Pricing of the Candidate Micros

For descriptions of the micros you have found, tum first to the Microcomputers section index. The index will direct you to the product briefs and/or specifications chart describing the systems. Use the information in these reports to screen sys- tems whose features and capabilities do not match your needs.

Step 7: Evaluate the Candidate Micros' Price/Capability

You can continue the screening process by turning to the Microcomputer Ratings Guides. Read the introduction to the appropriate guide to understand how it is constructed and how it should be applied in the selection process. Then consult the section's index to determine if and where your candidate sys- tems are covered in the guide. Determine which of the system features heading the guide are most important for you and see how the potential systems scored in those categories. To get an idea of the systems' capability/price ratio across all the fea- tures, compare the quality rating figures in the column to the far right. The higher its quality rating, the better the system's value.

Quality rating, however, should not be the only deciding factor in choosing a system. How a system rated in those fea- tures crucial to your application is just as important as how it rated across all the features. When using the Ratings Guides, be sure to factor your particular needs into the equation.

You can round out your system configuration with any sys- tems software or peripherals required by your application.

Step 8: Select Compatible Systems Software If you need additional systems software (e.g., data commu- nications packages, languages) tum first to the compatibility matrix in the appropriate systems software section. Scan down the columns headed by the operating systems of your candi- date micros until you come to a bullet. Read across the row at this intersection for the name of a package that will run on that operating system. When you have collected several packages, tum to the section index for the page numbers of the packages' product summaries. Use the information in the summaries to further narrow your choices.

Step 9: Select Appropriate Peripherals

For peripheral devices (e.g., disk drives, printers, add-on memories, monitors, modems), go first to the specifications chart guide in the section covering the type of peripheral you are seeking. As noted earlier, the guide explains the features used to describe the device. Decide which features are vital to your system and evaluate the devices in the accompanying chart accordingly.

Case 2-Expanding the Capabilities of an Existing System

If you already own a micro, you are likely at some time to want to extend its use or expand its capabilities.

Step 1: Determine Your Application Need You might, for example, want to develop a spreadsheet ap- plication for your system. The application necessitates trans- mitting data to a compatible system at a rcmotc site. To ac- complish this, you discovcr that you necd not only a spreadshcct and a data communications packagc but additional mcmory as wcll.

Step 2: Identify the Application Packages that Run on Your Operating System

To find a spreadsheet package, tum to the compatibility ma- trix in the Budgeting/Forecasting section. Locate your micro's operating system along the top of the matrix. Scan down that column, noting which packages (listed alphabetically by ven- dor on the left-hand side of the matrix) will run on your sys- tem. Go next to the Budgeting/Forecasting Features Matrix to determine which of the compatible packages have the features you need; this exercise will eliminate many of the packages.

Step 3: Review the Characteristics and Pricing of the Candidate Packages

To eliminate even more packages, consult the section's in- dex to locate the packages' product summaries. These provide

195.0005.003

more descriptive information on the packages, including the latest prices and the vendors' addresses and phone numbers.

Step 4: Select Compatible Systems Software Selecting a data communications package is done in a simi- lar fashion. The compatibility matrix in the Data Communica- tions section will identify which packages are compatible with your operating system. You can find descriptions and costs of the candidate packages in the section's product summaries.

(Remember to use the section index to locate each package's product summary.)

Step 5: Select Appropriate Peripherals

For add-on memories, go first to that scction's specifica- tions chart guidc. The guide dcscribcs the features against which add-on memories are compared in the accompanying specifications chart. Based on the requirements of your partic- ular system and application, determine the features that an add-on memory must have and peruse the chart for devices that have those features.
