The Saint Louis Art Museum seeks a collegial, collaborative, experienced, flexible, and energetic scholar to join one of the seven departments in the Museum’s curatorial division. Part of SLAM’s encyclopedic collection, the Department of European Art to 1800 covers artwork made in ancient Mediterranean civilizations and in Europe from the earliest communities through the end of the 18th century, in its collection of approximately 1400 objects, primarily works in painting and sculp- ture. Candidate must demonstrate expertise in at least one of the following fields in European art:

Ancient Mediterranean, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, or 18th century. An ideal candidate will have some prior museum experience (for Assistant Curator) or at least 5 years’ experience (for Associate Curator) and should be comfortable working within a global context and willing to seize the opportunities provided by an encyclopedic collection. A successful candidate must also demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, both within the institution as well as a sen- sitivity to the community and public that the museum serves. The candidate must have a demons- trated commitment to advanced scholarship, evidenced by a record of research, publication, activi- ty in professional associations, and in organizing exhibitions. Familiarity with current legal and eth- ical topics in collection stewardship and in museology are essential. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills and be conscientious in meeting deadlines.

Under the supervision of the curator and with a high degree of independence, the Associate or Assistant Curator will contribute to the oversight and care of the Museum’s collection in this department. This includes working on acquisitions, collection research and cataloguing, research and collaboration in caring for objects, developing and carrying out exhibitions and gallery dis- plays, preparing publications, and many public-facing projects based on the Museum’s collection and on topics that relate to fields within the department. Intra- and interdepartmental collabora- tion is essential. The Associate or Assistant Curator will also be active in development and mainte- nance of donor relationships.

DUTIES, WORK PERFORMED:

- Assist with the stewardship of the collection, enhancing its quality through research, pursuit and recommendation of acquisitions (purchases and gifts), and deaccessions.

- Research, interpret, provide and track information on the collection including outcomes such as

cataloging and documenting of objects, publications, lectures, docent training (all in-person and/or remotely using digital tools).

- Develop and generate art exhibitions that vary widely in scale and scope

- Assist in continuous planning and execution of changes to the installation of the collection.

- Collaborate with curatorial, learning & engagement, digital, and development colleagues to pro- vide content, support, and programming as needed, in digital and in-person formats, for public, member, collector, and patron groups.

- Support and collaborate with conservators, installation crew, collections data personnel, and reg- istrars to assure proper storage, handling, restoration, preservation, documentation, and display of objects in the collection.

- Assist with and maintain individual, foundation, corporate, community partner, and other impor- tant donor prospect research and cultivation efforts in a collaborative manner and, when appropri- ate, participate in solicitation and stewardship, while following Museum guidelines and best prac- tices.

Qualifications: Master's degree required, Ph.D. preferred. Proficiency in one or more foreign lan- guages appropriate to the specific field of scholarship is required; fluency preferred

Additional Details:

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and will have an annual starting range in the low $50,000s (assistant curator) to the low to mid $60,000s (associate curator) with compre- hensive benefits.
