DI AGNOSTI C TECHNI QUES General Proc edures A c us t omer normally learns of 1442 f ailures f r o m the us ing system, f r o m indic at or light s on the operat or panel, o r f r o m ex aminat ion of the punched cards. The Cus t omer Engineer is normally c alled af t er the c us t omer has v erifi ed the f ailure. A t t his t ime, i t is we l l f or the CE to gat her as muc h inf ormat ion as pos s ible, s uc h as: • W h i c h e r r o r indic ations did the c us t omer r e ceive f r o m the using s y s t em? • W h i c h 1442 indic at or light s c ame on? • C a n the f ailure be duplic at ed? • D o e s the f ailure tend to s t ay wit h one c ard c olumn; wit h a part ic ular punch or group of punches? •. r w. D o the f ailures f o r m a pat t ern?. I f the c us t omer can releas e the system, t he diagnostic programs prov ided can be used to f urt her is olat e the f ailure. Af t er a f ailure has been diagnosed and repaired, the diagnos t ic programs should be r u n f or a fi nal check of 1442 operat ion. Card Ex aminat ion. I ndic at or Lamps Power On indicates that both AC and DC power are applied to t he 1442. I f the light is off, a power f ailure is indicated. Ready, n o r ma l l y light ed by the us ing s y s t em's proc es s ing unit to indic at e that the 1442 has c ards in the feed and is ready to process t hem. I f the indic at or is off, i t implies one o r mo r e of the f ollowing conditions: • P o w e r off. • C a r d not regis t ered at read or punch s t at ion (no c ard required at punch s t at ion on c y c le immediat ely f ollowing r u n - i n cycles). • H o p p e r empt y . • S t a c k e r f ull. • C o v e r int erloc k open. • C h i p box f ull or not in place. • A t t e n t i o n or check light on. Chip Box (1442-6 & 7 only ) indic at es that the c hip box is f ull or not in place. At t ent ion (1442-5 only) indic at es one o r bot h of the f ollowing conditions: • C h i p box f ull or not in place.. I n many instances, a f ailure that t urns on an indic at or res ult s f r o m s omet hing int erf ering wit h the normal mov ement of c ards t hrough the feed. S u c h int erf erenc e of t en appears as a mark or nic k on the c ard. Reading f ailures can be caused by of f -punc hed c a r d . (11) CHAPTER H. MA I NTE NA NCE FEATURES. DI AGNOSTI C PROGRAMS. L A MP TEST. Diagnos t ic programs are prov ided f or online t es t ing of the 1442-5, 6, and 7. Th e s e rout ines are part of the diagnos t ic program package f o r the proc es s ing unit to whic h the 1442 is attached. Det ailed inf ormat ion about these diagnos t ic programs is inc luded in the maintenance and/ or prog r a mmi n g manuals supplied wit h the proc es s ing unit.. A lamp test line i n the 1442 indic at or lamp c irc uit s gives the c us t omer and the CE a quic k met hod of detecting burned out indic at or lamps . W h e n t his line is activated f rom the proc es s ing unit , a l l lamps on the 1442 are activated.. CE SWI TCH. This rot ary s wit c h connects v arious s ignal lines t o an adjacent hub. The check, adjus t ment , and remov al proc edures f or mec hanic al units of the Serial Reader Punch (SRP) not prov ided in this section are prov ided in the I B M Field Engineering Maintenance Manual, Serial Reader Punch, Fo r m 231-0026.. Objective Check ov erall clutch operat ion by det ermining the t ime required f or the c lut c h to engage af t er i t is mec hanic ally activated. Proc edure. CARD FE E D CL UTCH RESPONSE SERVI CE CHECK Objective Check clutch operat ion by det ermining the t ime r e quired f or the clutch to engage af t er the c lut c h magnet is energized.. Proc edure 1. S y n c scope: — Feed Clut c h Select (ER 181). 2. O b s e r v e output of Feed CB 1 (ER 101). 3. I n i t i a t e clutch operations by moment arily depressing the NPRO key. 4. F e e d CB 1 line should become ac t iv e at about 17 t o 24 millis ec onds af t er the sync. A c t u a l t ime v aries between machines because of dif f ering machine speeds. Ho we v e r , t he t iming on successive cycles should not v ary more than 2. 0 millis ec onds . 5. F a i l u r e to obt ain the t iming in step 4 may be caused by one o r more of the f ollowing:. 1. S y n c scope on Feed CB 1 line (ER 101). 2. O b s e r v e + Read Emit t er line (ER 131). 3. U s e the NPRO key t o run the mac hine wit hout cards. 4. T h e fi rs t emit t er pulse should go plus at between 7 and 11 millis ec onds af t er the sync. Ac t ual t ime v aries because of dif f ering mac hine speed and emit t er adjus t ment . W i t h the NPRO key held down, t he s t art of the fi r s t emit t er pulse should v ary no mo r e than 500 usec between cycles. 5. F a i l u r e t o obtain the t iming in step 4 may be caused by one or more of the f ollowing: • I n c o r r e c t adjus t ment of c ont rol s leev et o-lat c h a r m clearance. • Co n t a mi n a t i o n . • L a c k of lubric at ion. • W e a k or defective helic al s pring. • B i n d i n g c ont rol sleeve.. • I n c o r r e c t adjustment of c ont rol s leev e-t o-lat c h a r m clearance. • Co n t a mi n a t i o n . r a t . (18) READ DA TA PULSE SERVI CE CHECK, MODELS 6 AND 7. Adjus t ment Objectives • E m i t t e r pulse caused by fi rs t s lot in emit t er disk should oc c ur during c olumn one read t ime.. Objective Check f or c orrec t operat ion of read station. Proc edure 1. S e t up 1442 t o continuously read a dec k of cards prepunched (all punches) in c olumn 40. This can be done by programming or by plac ing both leads to the hopper s wit c h on one t erminal and us ing the NPRO key. 2. W h i l e running c ards continuously, s c ope i n puts and outputs of phot ot rans is t or amplifi ers (ER 121, 131) and check: a. 1 4 4 2 Model 6 • M i n i m u m amplit ude of any part of any data pulse f r o m phot ot rans is t ors should not be low enough to cause shortened output f rom ampl i fi e r (see Figure 4-9). • D a t a pulses should begin wit hin 100 usec of each ot her. b. 1 4 4 2 Model 7 • M i n i m u m amplit ude of any part of any data puls e f r o m phot ot rans is t ors should not be low enough to cause shortened output f rom a mp l i fi e r (see Figure 4-9). • D a t a pulses should begin wit hin 75 usec of each other. If data pulses do not meet these s pec ifi c at ions , c hec k read s t at ion adjustments (SRP Maintenance Manual) and light source lamp voltage adjus t ment (this chapter). READ E MI TTE R TI MI NG AND DURATI ON MODELS 6 AND 7 Fo r convenience, t wo decks of cards s hould be av ailable: o n e pre punched wit h all punches in c olumn one, t he ot her pre punched wit h all punches in c olumn 40. Th e s e decks mus t be punched in accurate regis t rat ion. Service Check. • E m i t t e r pulse s hould begin 65 usec 1-40 usec bef ore the c ent er of the data pulse f or Model 6; 50 usec ± 40 usec bef ore the c ent er of the data puls e f or Model 7. • I n a c t i v e t ime of emit t er puls e should be 400 usec ± 200 usec f or Model 6; 300 usec ± 150 usec f or Model 7. NOTE: Do u b l e t rac es , o r a wide and a n a r r o w pulse, w i l l be seen when scoping the output of the read phot ot rans is t or amplifi ers . T h e nar r ow pulse is the data pulse; the wide pulse is caused by the space between cards.
