Under suitable conditions, the synthesis of oxide precursor nanoparticles in (micro)- emulsionsallows for the preparation of aggregate-free spherical nanoparticles with a narrow size distri-bution. 5 nm ZrO2, Fe2O3 and BaTiO3 precursor particles are synthesised from thermally stable w/o emulsions and employed to prepare nanostructured ultrathin layers and coatings by colloidal processing. Nanocomposite coatings can also easily be prepared enabling to enter the new field of nanoparticle and nanocomposite chemistry and to study synergistic effects. In situ transmission microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy are performed to study crystallization, phase evolution, particle orientation and sintering of single particles. This allows a systematic comparison with results obtained for aggregated powders and solid compacts.
