Eine madagaskarische Lebensregel,

Ich entnehme dieselbe dem Folk-Lore Journal vol. I
p. 2, welcbes über seine Quelle Folgendes bemerkt:
,The most valuable contribution to our knowledge of Mala¬
gasy Folk-Tales has been made by a le»rned member of the Nor¬
wegian Lutheran Mission , the Rev. Louis Dahle, who published in
the early part of 1877 a volume of 457 pages, small octavo,
entitled Specimens of Malagasy Folk-Lore. This was
printed at the Press of the Friends' Foreign Mission Association
at Antananarivo and dedicated to the Memory of the late Dr.
W. H. J. Bleek, of Cape Town, so well known for his laborious
investigations into South African languages and literature. Except
the preface and title-page, this volume is entirely iu Malagasy, and
is therefore as yet a sealed book to those who are unacquainted
with the language in which it is vmtten".
Der Verfasser des in Rede stehenden Aufsatzes im Folk-Lore
Journal, der Rev. James Sibree, Junior (The Oratory, Songs, Legends,
and Folk-Tales of the Malagasy) bemerkt weiterhin (p. 10):
,In Malagasy philosophy, as in that of all nations, there occurs
frequent mention of life and its shortness ; and, in the absence of
any certainty as to a future life, a sentiment somewhat parallel
to tbe old heathen saying. ,Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow
we die", as thus : —
Take your fill of Pleasure while you live.
,0 ye prosperous people, 0 ye well-to-do folks, take your fill
of pleasure while you live ; for when dead and come to the , stone
with the little mouth" [the native tombs, among the Hova, are
made of large undressed slabs of basalt rock, in one of which a smaU
entrance is cut] it is not to retum the same day, but to stop
there to sleep '); it is not to visit only , but to remain. The

Der Rev. Sibree hat oben den heidnischen Spmch angeführt
,Let us eat and drink, for to morrow we die", und ich verweise
in dieser Beziehung nur auf Athen. 8, 14 (p. 336 Cas.) cf 12, 39
(p. 529); dagegen wird einem jeden hier die Grahschrift der Ta-
Imhotep beifaUen , einer Priesterin zu Memphis , worin sie ihren
Brader und Gatten anredet Bmgsch , Die ägyptische Gräberwelt
S. 39 f hat dieselbe übersetzt, doch liegt sie mir eben nur vor in
der Uebersetzung von Soury, Contes et Romans de l'ancienne Egypte,
in der Revue d. deux Mondes 1875 T. VII p. 708 aus Maspero,
Du genre Epistolaire chez les anciens Egyptiens. Paris 1873, und
danach will ich sie hier wiederholen : ,0 mon frfere , ö mon ami,
6 -mon mari , ne cesse pas de boire, de manger, de vider la coupe
de la joie, de faire l'amour et de c616brer des fötes, suis toujours
ton d^sir et ne laisse jamais entrer le chagrin en ton coeur, si
longtemps que tu es sur la terre ! car 1' Amenti est le pays du sourd
sommeil et des tenfebres,' une demeure de deuU pour ceux qui y
restent etc. etc.
Ganz desselben Inhalts ist auch ,The solemn festal dirge of the
Egyptians* in den Records of the Past" IV, 117 f Alles dies dient
zur Bestätigimg dessen, was Herod. 2, 78 in Betreff der Aegypter
anführt und worin er berichtet:
„Bei den Gesellschaften der Reichen, wenn die Mahlzeit vorüber
ist, trägt ein Mann einen Leichnam in einem Sarge umher, welcher
Leichnam aus Holz gemacht und aufs genaueste an Farbe und
Arbeit nachgeahmt ist, an Grösse ungefähr ein bis zwei EUen lang ;
und indem er denselben einem jeden der Trinkgenossen zeigt, fügt
er hinzu: „„Sieh dir den hier an und trinke und ergötze dich;
denn nach deinem Tode wirst du gerade so einer werden" ". Dies thut man bei den Trinkgelagen".

Eine arabische Sage.

Sehr wohl bekaimt ist die Sage über den Untergang der
arabischen Stämme Tasm und Gadis, in welcher sich zwei Sagen
verbunden finden, nämlicb die von dem jus primae noctis und
die von dem wandernden Walde. Ersteres ist gleichermassen
viel besprochen worden , in neuester Zeit von dem Oberlandes¬
gerichtsrath Dr. Karl Schmidt in mehrfachen Schriften und Abhand¬
lungen, so z. B. in der Zeitschrift für Ethnologie „Der Streit über
das jus primae noctis' Band XVl, welche ich besonders deswegen
hervorhebe, weil sie die genannte arabische Sage und die arabischen
Quellen derselben ausführlich mittheilt. Ich selbst habe bereits
früher in Pfeiffer's (jetzt Bartsch's) German. X, 109 f auf die
arabische Sage hingewiesen, wiederholt in meinem Buch „Zur Volks¬
kunde S 179, und benutze ich diese Gelegenheit, um in Bezug auf
die daselbst erwähnte arabische Prau S'arka Aljemamah eine sie
betreffende Notiz anzuführen. Sie lebte nämlich in Aljemamah in
Central-Arabien als Frau des dortigen Fürsten, wie Mes-udiyy in
seinen Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems anno Heg. 333 (A. D.
943) c. 47 berichtet. S. Bedhouse in der Academy vom 24. Juh
1886 p. 58. Hinsichtlich der sogenannten Sage von dem jus primae
noctis ist wohl kein Zweifel, dass sie aus der uralten Sitte der
Gemeinehe hervorgegangen ist; denn: „comunal marriage was no
doubt aboriginal and founded ou natural instincts'. So John Lub¬
