Fact sheet: Demonstration of feasibility for the disposal of low and intermediate level waste

In 1988, the Federal Council accepted that a demonstration of feasibility for the disposal of low and in- termediate level waste had been given. Nagra had submitted the required evidence based on studies of a marl layer beneath the Oberbauenstock in the canton of Uri.

In order to identify a suitable site for a deep geological repository for low and intermediate level radioactive waste, Nagra had carried out a selection procedure comprising several stages and which led to the specification of three siting regions.

In 1983, it submitted applications for licences for geological explorations at three locations: Bois de la Glaive (Canton of Vaud), Oberbauenstock (Canton of Uri) and Piz Pian Grand (Canton of Grisons). Three geological studies were then conducted, although the study at the Bois de la Glaive site between 1991 and 1993 could only be carried out after lengthy legal proceedings and negotiations with the involved municipality.

Then in 1987, Nagra submitted an additional application for a licence to explore the Wellenberg site, which was granted in 1988. That same year the Federal Council announced its decision regarding Nagra's 1985 submission of a demonstration of feasibility ("Gewähr" Project), stating that Nagra had provided the required demonstration of feasibility for low and intermediate level radioactive waste, which had been based on studies of a marl layer be- neath the Oberbauenstock.
