It is affiliated with the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management. The responsibilities of the position comprise research and teaching in the fields of hydraulic structures and hydraulic engineering.

The professorship will promote the design and implementation of hydraulic structures in an integra- tive way within the framework of coupled human-environment systems. The subjects to be covered will range from construction and maintenance of hydraulic structures, be they industrial structures or protective structures, to fluvial modifications. In order to achieve these objectives the research focus will use a systems approach which, e,g., integrates the planning of hydropower schemes with concepts of energy economics and environmental management, or flood protection through struc- tural measures with concepts of flood risk management. The link between fundamental research all the way to the planning implementation will be achieved through field measurements, laboratory experiments, modelling and structural design. The appointed professor will be responsible for the operation of the hydraulic engineering laboratory.

In terms of teaching the professorship will cover all subjects of hydraulic structures and hydraulic engineering within the curricula of the bachelors and masters degrees in civil and environmental engineering at TU Wien. Successful candidates will have gained experience with the planning, de- sign and construction of hydraulic structures, preferably in the international construction industry.
