No to austerity

Governing europe means strengthening – not attacking – the social model.

The financial crisis has plunged Europe into a dire situation: more than 23 million unemployed across Europe, millions of European citizens in vulnerable and precarious situations whilst social tensions continue to grow almost everywhere.

The only response of European governments to this situation has been to take austerity measures, reduce social standards, cut wages and recommend wage moderation throughout the continent. These decisions will affect solidarity and social cohesion.

We did not cause this crisis.

We are against an ideology that makes competition the only element of social life. Austerity measures, taken essentially to calm the financial markets, have been geared primarily towards public spending which ensures social cohesion. Such measures should target speculators, not workers!

We reject:

» Austerity plans in Europe, cuts in wages and pensions,

» Insecurity and unemployment among young and less young workers,

» Deregulation of labour standards and social regression,

» Rising social inequalities.

Governing europe means working for a more social europe with greater solidarity for european citizens, especially for young people, retired people and women.

We are asking for:

» Access to quality jobs, stable jobs and better training for all,

» A guarantee of decent pay,

» Strong social protection, the only guarantee of social cohesion and solidarity,

» Protection of purchasing power,

» A guarantee of better pensions,

» Quality public and social services available to all.

Governing europe means taking action for real sustainable growth.

We are asking for:

» The introduction of a tax on financial transactions to ensure a public investment policy,

» Issuing Eurobonds to clamp down on speculation, to pool the risk and finance a European recovery plan,

» The development of sustainable and dynamic industrial polices based on low-carbon growth,

» Greater fiscal coordination and transparency to prevent social dumping in Europe.

Governing Europe means

More jobs, more justice and solidarity

Giving higher priority to employment and decent jobs Refusing precarious employment
