online, May 28–Jun 6, 2021 Deadline: Feb 10, 2021 Ornella Castiglione

Italian Art and Architecture on Film: an Interdisciplinary Overview

This session seeks papers which highlight traces of Italian architecture, sculpture or painting in cinematographic production. Well-known cases of direct pictorial quotation include the Rosso Fiorentino Deposizione and Mantegna Compianto sul Cristo morto in Pasolini’s first Roman period movies, or Hayez in Il gattopardo, as well as the inspiration of Caravaggio for the lighting in Murnau’s Faust, or the most recent shot of Bramante’s Tempietto di San Pietro in Montorio in La grande bellezza by Sorrentino. Research in this field could help to maintain an active interest in Italian art and architecture for general audiences as well as students, and to enhance and promote cultural heritage. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome.

Session to be submitted to the American Association of Italian Studies (AAIS), meeting held virtu- ally 28 May - 6 June 2021. If interested in participating, please send a brief proposal (max 100 words), title, affiliation, contact information and a synthetic biographical note by February 10 to the session organizer, Ornella Castiglione. ornella.castiglione@unimib.it
