Abstract: The paper analyses the concepts of (1) context, (2) practice and (3) technique in view of the contemporary Marxist critical position. Firstly, context is reconceptualised through the critique of determinism, and also in terms of randomness and the newly introduced concept of distext. This also highlights the inevitability of our post-factum understanding. Secondly, the classic 20th-century tension between practice and critique is examined through emancipation. The paper also discusses the crucial Enlightenment problem of emancipation being lost in the unfolding of history (i.e. there is no historical necessity for capitalism to be followed by a more just social form). And, thirdly, the concept of Homo sapiens technicus is analysed through its everlasting historical overlays, and the sapientia-Tg^vv] system, which always transforms Homo, is discussed: the pure technical reason is now reconceptualised as pure technological reason.
