The 7th ESTIEM Couneil Meeting took plaee from Nov.
30th to Dee. 5th. 1993 in Kai- serslautern, Palatinate (Rhein- land-Pfalz). Three members from the loeal WIV-student group attended the quite exhausting meeting.
ESTIEM stands for Europe- an Students of Industrial Engi- neering and Management and is an apolitieal democratic associa- tion aimed to develop and fo- ster eontacts among European students ofIEM and to inerease the opportunities for students to study and work abroad. Pre- sently, there are about 43 mem- bers and associates in 19 states:
Austria, Belgium, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Ger- many, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Nor- way, Poland, Portugal, Roma- nia, Russia, Spain, and Sweden.
ESTIEM was founded at the WIV congress in Berlin in No- vember 1990, with Graz being a founder member; the official ESTIEM language is English.
The administration is mainly done by a five person board, whose members are eleeted for a year on the biannual Council Meetings.
Tbe main ESTIEM activities are:
.CORS (Catalogue of Reeo- gnizable Subjects),
• EEMA (European Enginee- ring and Management As-
sociation), including pro- fessors and mana-gers,
• ESTIEM Alumni (associa- tion of graduates),
• ICP(Inter-University Coo- peration Programmes wit- hin ERASMUS),
• publication ofthe ESTIEM magazine and the Study Guide,
• TIMES (Tournament in Management & Enginee- ring Skills),
• ESTIEM-vision (Semi- nars),
• Company contacts and
• Case - studies.
Party - life and singing are not neglected, too. We eould feel the proverbial "ESTIEM - Spirit" during the various activities.
Besides, we had some time to see the infrastructure at Kaiserslautern's University of Technology, which is quite young, being 'established in 1970, witb the TU Linz as a partner university in Austria.
Two experienees were of special interest for me:
• Firstly, especially in northwestern Europe and Germany, the local student groups have lots of mem- bers (up to 300) and stu-
r dents join them at the be- ginning of their studies.
This is not the ease in Graz, beeause students rather concentrate on passing
their exams in their first seme- sters (don't they?) and eonsi- der it as a time-eonsuming risk joiningthe student group, which it is not. In my opinionitwould be useful and profitable especially for younger students to experienee the work in the student group.
• Seeondly, especially in Scandi- navian eountries and Germa- ny, English is quite a eommon language ofteaehing, witb many professors having been abroad for several years and doing English leetures.
So, ifyou are studying Industrial Engineering and Management (Wirt-schaftsingenieuiwesen) and liketo
• travel to European meetings and see other universities,
• eommunieate with students from all over Europe and get to know their approach to student life,
• join in international student work,
• experienee the process ofEuro- pean integration and
• influence international opini- on-leading, eome and join the WIV student group at the TU Graz (room 153) and then, go ESTIEM!
By the way: tbe next ESTIEM CM will take plaee at Ensehede, Netherlands, from April 5th to April 10th, 1994.
