T h r e e p r o p o s a l s w e r e m a d e to s t u d y p u b l i c j u d g m e n t s o n r i s k y a c t i v i t i e s a n d d i f f e r e n c e s b e t w e e n e x p e r t s a n d l a y p e o p l e w h e n e s t i m a t i n g a n d e v a l u a t i n g r isks. S l o v i c et. al., (Eugene) f o r e x a m p l e , h y p o t h e s i z e , ‘b a s e d on p r e l i m i n a r y f i n d i n g s , t h a t
l a y p e o p l e a n d e x p e r t s a t t a c h d i f f e r e n t m e a n i n g s t o t h e n o t i o n of
" r i s k " . F o r e x a m p l e , e x p e r t s a p p e a r to e q u a t e r i s k w i t h a n n u a l f a t a l i t y r a t e s , w h i l e l a y p e o p l e f o c u s r i s k j u d g m e n t s on d i s a s t e r p o t e n t i a l a n d d r e a d of the c o n s e q u e n c e s .
