J a h r h u n d e r t s i s t d a s V o r w o r t F r a n c i s K i r k m a n s z u s e i n e r Ausgabe d e s Don Bellianis of Greece^. Der damals r e c h t b e -

k a n n t e und angesehene Buchhändler, V e r l e g e r und A u t o r g i b t h i e r i n n o s t a l g i s c h e r Rückschau a u f e i g e n e L e s e e r l e b n i s s e e i n e n Überblick über d i e s e i n e r A n s i c h t nach z u w e n i g ge- schätzte G a t t u n g history, d i e e r v o n den romances a b s e t z t . Zu den historys r e c h n e t K i r k m a n Werke w i e Parismus, Seven Wise Masters, Bevis of Southampton und Amadis de Gaule. D i e ganze G a t t u n g i s t nach K i r k m a n i n d e r G u n s t d e s e n g l i s c h e n L e s e p u b l i k u m s d u r c h d i e romances verdrängt worden. Zu d i e - s e n r e c h n e t e r Werke w i e Parthenissa, Clavia, Astrea, L ' I l l u s t r e Bassa, d. h. a l s o n e o c h e v a l e r e s k e Romane, d i e zum überwiegenden T e i l aus dem Französischen übersetzt wor- den waren. S e i n e A u s s a g e n über d i e historys l a s s e n e r k e n n e n , daß d i e s e Werke im G e g e n s a t z z u den romances an e i n b r e i t e s , w e n i g g e g l i e d e r t e s P u b l i k u m g e r i c h t e t waren. D i e Seven Wise Masters z. B. wurden nach K i r k m a n i n I r l a n d den K i n d e r n i n

and O l d t a k e i n R e a d i n g t h e r e o f " . S e l b s t würdige ältere Bürger l a s e n n a c h K i r k m a n historys, da s i e s o n s t g l a u b t e n , befürchten z u müssen, v o n d e r jüngeren G e n e r a t i o n wegen i h r e r U n w i s s e n h e i t v e r l a c h t z u werden.
Der Buchhändler d i f f e r e n z i e r t h i e r a l s o nach l e s e r s o z i o - l o g i s c h e n G e s i c h t s p u n k t e n . D i e romances r i c h t e n s i c h primär an e i n a d e l i g e s P u b l i k u m , historys a b e r an e i n e s c h i c h t e n - s p e z i f i s c h kaum f e s t l e g b a r e L e s e r s c h a f t , " o f what Age, o r Sex s o e v e r " . ^ Bestätigt w i r d K i r k m a n s E i n t e i l u n g s k r i t e r i u m d u r c h e i n e Sammlung v o n populärer U n t e r h a l t u n g s l i t e r a t u r , d i e v o n Samuel Pepys während d e r Z e i t v o n 1680 b i s 1690 z u - s a m m e n g e s t e l l t und Vulgaria g e n a n n t wurde.^ D i e b i s h e r unbe- a c h t e t g e b l i e b e n e vierbändige K o l l e k t i o n enthält i n d e n e r - s t e n d r e i Bänden nahezu a l l e v o n K i r k m a n aufgeführten history

a b e r k e i n e romances. Schon wegen des hohen P r e i s e s waren d i e se m e i s t mehrbändigen n e o c h e v a l e r e s k e n Romane n u r einem begü- t e r t e n L e s e r k r e i s zugänglich, können daher n i c h t " v u l g a r " , a b e r auch n i c h t " p o p u l a r " g e n a n n t werden.
2. Weder i n K i r k m a n s L i s t e noch u n t e r den Vulgaria t a u - chen R i t t e r aus d e r T a f e l r u n d e a l s P r o t a g o n i s t e n bzw. T i t e l - f i g u r e n s e p a r a t e r Erzählungen a u f . Wohl a b e r erwähnt K i r k - man e i n e history über Arthur of Great Britain, und Band I I I d e r Vulgaria enthält e i n e A r t chapbook über Brittains Glory:

s c h w e i g e n v o n Amadis und Don Q u i c h o t e . *0 D i e Heroen d e s e i g e n e n Landes a b e r s e i e n i g n o r i e r t worden.**
Der Britenkönig w i r d v o r a l l e m aus p o l i t i s c h e n Gründen i n s B l i c k f e l d gerückt. T u d o r s und S t u a r t s h a t t e n i h r e Ahnen- s c h a f t a u f König A r t h u r zurückgeführt; b e i d e Königshäuser b e n u t z t e n den N a c h w e i s d e r H e r k u n f t v o n dem berühmten B r i t e n a l s R e c h t f e r t i g u n g d e s e i g e n e n T h r o n a n s p r u c h s . Das I n t e r e s - se d e r T u d o r - H i s t o r i o g r a p h e n f i x i e r t e s i c h d a h e r a u f d i e Ge- s t a l t König A r t h u r s s e l b s t . D i e Idee d e s rex futurus, s e i t dem 11. J a h r h u n d e r t immer w i e d e r l i t e r a r i s c h d a r g e s t e l l t , wurde nun a l s Rückkehr z u s e i n e r L i n i e gesehen und d a r g e -
s t e l l t . A u f f a l l e n d i s t , daß g e r a d e immer dann, wenn d i e T h r o n - f o l g e u n g e s i c h e r t bzw. u m s t r i t t e n w a r , d i e Abstammung v o n Kö- n i g A r t h u r b e h a u p t e t wurde. So nannte H e i n r i c h V I I . , d e s s e n E r b a n s p r u c h a u f den e n g l i s c h e n T h r o n vom A d e l n u r w i d e r s t r e - bend a n e r k a n n t worden w a r , s e i n e n ältesten Sohn A r t h u r , um
s e i n e H e r k u n f t v o n dem berühmten A h n h e r r n z u b e t o n e n . Nach dem A u s s t e r b e n d e s Hauses Tudor ließ s i c h E l i s a b e t h s Nach- f o l g e r James v o n den zeitgenössischen D i c h t e r n immer w i e d e r a l s d e r Arturus redivivus f e i e r n , d e r dem Königreich F r i e d e n und E i n h e i t b r i n g e n würde.
H i e r a u s e r g i b t s i c h , daß i n den e r s t e n J a h r z e h n t e n d e s 17. J a h r h u n d e r t s v o r a l l e m das P r o b l e m d e r Historizität König
A r t h u r s d i s k u t i e r t wurde. D i e H i s t o r i o g r a p h e n d i e s e s Z e i t - raums s t e h e n d e r Historia Regum Britanniae d e s G e o f f r e y o f Monmouth, i n s b e s o n d e r e dem A r t u s t e i l , w e s e n t l i c h p o s i t i v e r gegenüber a l s d i e d e s v o r a u s g e h e n d e n J a h r h u n d e r t s . T y p i s c h für d i e neue H a l t u n g d e r H i s t o r i k e r s c h e i n t R o b e r t S h e r i n g h a m , d e r nachdrücklich d a r a u f b e s t e h t , daß man a u f g r u n d e i n z e l n e r nugae und mendacia n i c h t d i e ganze H i s t o r i a Regum Britanniae v e r w e r f e n dürfe: "Omnia tarnen quae n a r r a t non s u n t p r o p t e r e a s i n e j u d i c i o & d e l e c t u r e p u d i a n d a , cum i n t e r s c r i p t o r e s hominem neminem i n v e n i e s , q u i non m u l t a ex fama & rumore n a r r e t ; p a u c o s ad modum, q u i ex amore p a t r i a e non a i i q u a n d o m e n t i a n t u r " .
Der Kampf z w i s c h e n B r i t e n und Sachsen i n A r t h u r s E n g l a n d f i n d e t im 17. J a h r h u n d e r t g l e i c h s a m s e i n h i s t o r i s c h e s Gegen- stück i n den A u s e i n a n d e r s e t z u n g e n d e r R o y a l i s t e n m i t den P a r - l a m e n t a r i e r n . Am Verhältnis z u König A r t h u r können w i r d e n p o l i t i s c h - i d e o l o g i s c h e n S t a n d o r t d e s A u t o r s a b l e s e n . Wo d i e p o l i t i s c h e Macht d e s Königs und d e s Königtums, i n s b e s o n d e r e d i e königliche Prärogative, i n den B l i c k p u n k t gerückt werden s o l l , f i n d e n w i r I n t e r e s s e an den B r i t e n a l s V o r f a h r e n und b e s o n d e r s an A r t h u r s e l b s t ; l i e g t den A u t o r e n a b e r d i e Stär- kung d e r Macht d e s P a r l a m e n t s am H e r z e n , f i n d e n w i r A n g r i f - f e a u f d i e B r i t e n und a u f König A r t h u r .
3. Gemeinsam i s t nahezu a l l e n einschlägigen A u t o r e n d e s 17. J a h r h u n d e r t s , daß s i e König A r t h u r aus p o l i t i s c h e n , p a t r i o - t i s c h e n , m o r a l i s c h e n o d e r h o m i l e t i s c h e n Gründen z u i h r e r e i g e -

nen Z e i t i n B e z i e h u n g s e t z e n . A u t o r e n und L e s e r haben zwar k e i n e s w e g s den Geschmack für w u n d e r b a r e , v o n j e g l i c h e r h i s t o -
r i s c h e n Realität w e i t e n t f e r n t e A b e n t e u e r v e r l o r e n , w i e d i e z a h l r e i c h e n heroic romances b e w e i s e n ; König A r t h u r aber w i r d d i e s e r F a b e l w e l t e n t z o g e n , i n a k t u e l l e Zusammenhänge e i n g e - o r d n e t , näher an d i e zeitgenössische W i r k l i c h k e i t h e r a n g e h o l t .
Das i s t k e i n e e i n m a l i g e E r s c h e i n u n g i n d e r e n g l i s c h e n
a r t h u r i s c h e n L i t e r a t u r . Schon d e r D i c h t e r des Alliterierenden Morte Arthure^^ s t e l l t den Britenkönig m i t e i n d e u t i g e m B l i c k
a u f König Edward I I I . d a r , d e r anläßlich e i n e s T u r n i e r s i n W i n d s o r geschworen h a t t e , s i c h A r t h u r zum V o r b i l d z u nehmen und ihm n a c h z u e i f e r n . D i e B e l e h r u n g d e s D i c h t e r s r i c h t e t s i c h d a h e r an Edward, d e r i n F r a n k r e i c h ähnlich grausame S c h l a c h t e n g e s c h l a g e n h a t t e ( C r e c y , 1346) w i e d e r A r t h u r des a l l i t e r i e r e n d e n G e d i c h t e s . A r t h u r macht i n d i e s e r romance o f f e n s i c h t l i c h e i n e E n t w i c k l u n g d u r c h . Aus dem s t r a h l e n d e n
I d e a l h e r r s c h e r des e r s t e n T e i l e s w i r d e i n t y r a n n i s c h e r und b a r b a r i s c h e r Erobererkönig, dem d i e G e s e t z e d e r M e n s c h l i c h - k e i t und des R i t t e r t u m s n i c h t s mehr b e d e u t e n . I m p l i z i t e w i r d d a r g e s t e l l t , daß j e d e r , d e r hoch a u f s t e i g t , d u r c h d i e Macht k o r r u m p i e r t w i r d und d a d u r c h s e i n e n e i g e n e n casus auslöst.
Der A l l i t e r i e r e n d e Morte Arthure i s t f o l g l i c h e i n e A r t Fürstenspiegel, z u m i n d e s t a b e r e i n e tragedie im m i t t e l a l t e r -
l i c h e n W o r t v e r s t a n d und s o m i t Vorläufer d e r Mirror for Magistrates-DarStellungen. D i e e r s t e M i r r o r - G e s c h i c h t e über König A r t h u r s c h r i e b 1610 R i c h a r d N i c c o l s . Das s e i n e r z e i t r e c h t bedeutende Buch i s t h e u t e n u r noch i n einem E x e m p l a r

Für d i e w e i t e r e E n t w i c k l u n g d e s A r t u s s t o f f e s i s t d a s Werk d e s h a l b w i c h t i g , w e i l e s e i n V e r b i n d u n g s g l i e d z w i s c h e n den spätmittelalterlichen L a n g v e r s i o n e n und den populären chapbooks d e s 1 7 . / 1 8 . J a h r h u n d e r t s d a r s t e l l t , d i e
auf d i e s e s o d e r ähnliche Werke a l s Q u e l l e zurückgegriffen haben könnten.
N i c c o l s s c h r e i b t zwar auch e i n e tragedie, a b e r d e r casus- C h a r a k t e r d e r G e s c h i c h t e i s t kaum noch zu e r k e n n e n . A r t h u r w i r d e h e r a l s exemplum bonum v o r Augen geführt. I n V e r b i n - dung m i t w e i t e r e n e p i s c h e n H e l d e n E n g l a n d s s t e h t d e r König e i n e r m y t h i s c h e n O p p o s i t i o n gegenüber, zusammengesetzt aus den H e l d e n d e r g r i e c h i s c h e n Sage und denen d e r m i t t e l a l t e r - l i c h e n Z y k l e n . T a t e n d r a n g und Ruhmbegierde A r t h u r s werden e h e r g e l o b t a l s g e t a d e l t .
N i c c o l s g e h t a u f d i e HRB zurück, k e n n t a b e r auch z a h l r e i - che w e i t e r e , zum T e i l r e c h t p e r i p h e r e Werke d e r matiere de Bretagne. Der B e r i c h t über d i e E n t s c h e i d u n g s s c h l a c h t stammt t e i l w e i s e aus späten s c h o t t i s c h e n C h r o n i k e n . E i n p i k t i s c h e r Verräter r u f t a u s : " E r g e b t e u c h , i h r B r i t e n ! König A r t h u r i s t t o t ! " D a r a u f h i n b e g i n n t e i n e a l l g e m e i n e F l u c h t . A r t h u r erhält a u f dem S c h l a c h t f e l d d i e Todeswunde. F r e u n d e b r i n g e n

Aus N i c c o l s Mirror o d e r ähnlichen Werken könnten d i e chapbook-Autoren i h r e I n s p i r a t i o n geschöpft haben. D i e un- m i t t e l b a r e n V o r l a g e n s i n d j e d e n f a l l s n i c h t mehr e r h a l t e n . So w i s s e n w i r z. B. n i c h t , von welchem Buch d e r chapbook- A u t o r J . S. s p r i c h t , wenn e r s a g t : " I ' v e a b s t r a c t e d h e r e K i n g A r t h u r ' s n o b l e a c t s w h i c h d o t h appear more f u l l y i n t h e

S e i n Name i s t M a r t i n P a r k e r , v o n B e r u f tavern-keeper und a l s s o l c h e r s i c h e r l i c h m i t den u n t e r e n S c h i c h t e n d e r Be- völkerung w o h l v e r t r a u t . Während d e s 17. J a h r h u n d e r t s e r f r e u t e e r s i c h großer B e l i e b t h e i t a l s B a l l a d e n a u t o r . George, Robin Hood, Bevis of Hampton, Tom Thumb, Scoggin' Jests e t c . r e c h t g u t k a n n t e .
P a r k e r d a c h t e v o n s i c h und s e i n e r d i c h t e r i s c h e n L e i s t u n g k e i n e s w e g s g e r i n g ; e r s a h s i c h i n d e r R e i h e d e r großen eng-

A g a i n " (1643) w e i s t P a r k e r a l s R o y a l i s t e n a u s ; s e i n e o f f e n e n p o l i t i s c h e n Äußerungen haben ihm e t l i c h e J a h r e Gefängnis e i n - g e b r a c h t .
D i e w e s e n t l i c h e n Daten und F a k t e n d e s A r t u s t e i l s , d e r m i t d e r G e s c h i c h t e V o r t i g e r s b e g i n n t , entnimmt P a r k e r d e r Historia Regum Britanniae, v e r m i s c h t s i e a l l e r d i n g s m i t E i g e n e r f i n d u n - gen. W a h r s c h e i n l i c h erzählte P a r k e r d i e A r t u s g e s c h i c h t e aus dem Gedächtnis. D i e Namen d e r Nebenpersonen stimmen a l l e n i c h t g a n z . So w i r d z. B. I g e r n e , d i e F r a u d e s Duke o f C o r n - w a l l , b e i ihm z u I g r e n , d e r e n Gemahl z u C o i s e n . B e i dem wäh- r e n d d e r P f i n g s t w o c h e v o n A r t h u r v e r a n s t a l t e t e n T u r n i e r i n R e r u l a m b e i S t . A l b a n (gemeint i s t d a s a l t e römische Verulam) t r e t e n a l s H a u p t a k t e u r e zwar Gawain und Cador a u f , daneben a b e r f i n d e n s i c h merkwürdige Namen, d i e dem a r t h u r i s c h e n O n o m a s t i c o n fremd s i n d : Duke H a i s t e i n , D a u p h i n o f V i e n a , Lady J a q u i n t a e t c .
D i e G e b u r t A r t h u r s erzählt P a r k e r ähnlich w i e G e o f f r e y . E r g i b t z u , daß d i e A u s e i n a n d e r s e t z u n g z w i s c h e n U t e r und dem Duke o f C o r n w a l l d u r c h d a s Liebesverhältnis z w i s c h e n U t e r und I g r e n z u s t a n d e kam, s t e l l t a b e r dennoch d i e Legitimität
A r t h u r s n i c h t i n F r a g e . B e i d e r Wahl A r t h u r s zum König gab es n a c h P a r k e r k e i n e r l e i D i s s e n s . B a r o n e , Prälaten und d a s e i n f a c h e V o l k e n t s c h i e d e n s i c h e i n s t i m m i g für A r t h u r .
A r t h u r kämpft zunächst im Lande s e l b s t gegen d i e h e i d n i - s c h e n S a c h s e n , denen e r v e r n i c h t e n d e N i e d e r l a g e n b e i b r i n g t . Nach d e r e n " e x s t i r p a t i o n " rüstet e r e i n e F l o t t e von v i e r - h u n d e r t S c h i f f e n aus und e r o b e r t Dänemark, Norwegen und G o t l a n d . Nach Ende d e s F e l d z u g e s s o w i e d e r Bekehrung und T a u f e d e s n o r w e g i s c h e n T h r o n f o l g e r s E r i k überlegt A r t h u r , w i e e r s e i n e t a p f e r e n und immer s i e g r e i c h e n S o l d a t e n b e l o h - nen k a n n . Um N e i d und Mißgunst z u v e r m e i d e n , r i c h t e t e r i n d e r S t a d t W i n c h e s t e r den Orden d e r T a f e l r u n d e e i n . D i e b e - s t e n R i t t e r d e s Landes werden f e i e r l i c h i n d e n K r e i s a u f g e - nommen, i n s g e s a m t einhundertfünfzig. S i e s p e i s e n an r i e s i - gen r u n d e n T i s c h e n , v o n denen A r t h u r e i n i g e i n A u f t r a g g i b t .
In d e r M i t t e d e r o f f e n b a r n i c h t a l l z u großen round tables s t a n d j e w e i l s B r o t und S a l z . D i e Namen d e r 150 R i t t e r zählt M. P. a u f . E i n i g e Namen s i n d aus d e r A r t u s l i t e r a t u r b e k a n n t ; d i e m e i s t e n a l l e r d i n g s h a t M. P. e r f u n d e n .
Während d e r A b w e s e n h e i t A r t h u r s rühren s i c h o f f e n b a r d i e n o c h n i c h t völlig ausgelöschten S a c h s e n und suchen zusammen m i t P i k t e n , S k o t e n und I r e n d a s Land h e i m . A r t h u r e i l t m i t
s e i n e m Heer a u s Dänemark h e r b e i , s u c h t d i e S c h l a c h t und s i e g t . M i t e i g e n e r Hand erschlägt e r C o l g r i m , den Sachsenkönig. Aus d e r Bemerkung, daß e r d i e F r a g e d e r Rechtmäßigkeit des A n s p r u c h s A r t h u r s a u f den e n g l i s c h e n T h r o n a l s n i c h t z u r S a - che gehörig e r a c h t e (... " t h a t ' s n o t p e r t i n e n t t o o u r s t o r y " , S. 5), läßt s i c h schließen, daß P a r k e r aus d e r V i e l z a h l d e r überlieferten G e s c h i c h t e n über König A r t h u r d i e r e l e v a n t e n und den h i s t o r i s c h e n T a t s a c h e n e n t s p r e c h e n d e n auswählen w o l l - t e - schließlich s t a n d ihm für s e i n chapbook nur e i n D r u c k - bogen z u r Verfügung. Wenn e r a l s o v i e l P l a t z v e r g e u d e t , um d i e hundertfünfzig Namen d e r T a f e l r u n d e n m i t g l i e d e r aufzuzäh- l e n , so muß e r dafür g u t e Gründe g e h a b t haben. P a r k e r w o l l t e o f f e n b a r a u f d i e s e Weise d i e Authentizität s e i n e r Erzählung u n t e r m a u e r n ; e r b e h a u p t e t nämlich, d i e s e L i s t e i n einem a l - t e n C h a u c e r - M a n u s k r i p t g e f u n d e n z u haben. Den E i n d r u c k v o n Historizität s o l l e n o f f e n b a r auch d i e genauen L e b e n s - und R e g i e r u n g s d a t e n d e r H e r r s c h e r v e r m i t t e l n .
Zu P a r k e r s A n l i e g e n d e r E i n g l i e d e r u n g König A r t h u r s i n d i e e n g l i s c h e G e s c h i c h t e p a s s e n d i e an mehreren S t e l l e n e r - k e n n b a r e n zeitgenössischen Bezüge und A k t u a l i s i e r u n g e n . So
g r e i f t M. P. e i n im gesamten 17. J a h r h u n d e r t a k t u e l l e s , überall d i s k u t i e r t e s P r o b l e m a u f , wenn e r b e h a u p t e t , daß d e r König n i c h t eo ipso d e r geborene Regent des V o l k e s s e i ,
s o n d e r n d a z u vom V o l k e e r s t gemacht werde, e i n e n A u f t r a g e r h a l t e . P a r k e r s p r o t o t y p i s c h e r b r i t i s c h e r H e r r s c h e r w i r d vom g a n z e n V o l k e gewählt. I n d i e s e r B e z i e h u n g v e r t r i t t d e r A u t o r e i n e den R o y a l i s t e n e n t g e g e n g e s e t z t e P o s i t i o n : daß nämlich d i e Souveränität vom V o l k e a u s g e h t . Auf ähnlich u n i - v e r s a l e Zustimmung w i e A r t h u r war auch K a r l I I . b e i s e i n e r W i e d e r e i n s e t z u n g 1660 gestoßen.
A r t h u r b e g i n n t den Kampf gegen d i e S a c h s e n m i t einem A u f r u f an s e i n V o l k . Damals war es n i c h t nötig, so s a g t M. P., S o l d a t e n d u r c h " p r e s s i n g gangs" zum W a f f e n d i e n s t z u z w i n g e n - e i n H i n w e i s a u f d i e um 1660 übliche P r a x i s d e r Re- k r u t i e r u n g von S o l d a t e n . A l l e wehrfähigen Männer s t e l l t e n s i c h v i e l m e h r f r e i w i l l i g z u r Verfügung, und zwar ohne B e z a h - l u n g .
E i n e n w e i t e r e n Bezug z u r zeitgenössischen Gegenwart s t e l l t M.P. d u r c h den H i n w e i s h e r , A r t h u r s v i e r h u n d e r t S c h i f f e umfas- sende F l o t t e s e i e i n Vorgänger d e r berühmten e n g l i s c h e n navy.
U n t e r James I . war das e n g l i s c h e S c h i f f s w e s e n i n V e r f a l l g e r a - t e n , u n t e r K a r l I I . a b e r , d e r den tüchtigen Samuel Pepys a l s Se kretär d e r Admiralität einsetzte,blühte d i e R o y a l Navy, w i e s i e s e i t d i e s e r Z e i t genannt wurde,auf. n i c h t z u e r m i t t e l n war. Das i n d e r B r i t i s h L i b r a r y a u f b e - 27 w a h r t e E x e m p l a r i s t nach dem K a t a l o g 1675 e n t s t a n d e n . Sämtliche z e i t g e s c h i c h t l i c h e n A n s p i e l u n g e n b e z i e h e n s i c h j e d o c h a u f James I . ; d a h e r l i e g t d i e Vermutung nahe, daß das chapbook z u einem s e h r v i e l früheren Z e i t p u n k t - etwa um 1625 - e n t s t a n d e n i s t .
Im V o r w o r t heißt e s , daß d a s e n g l i s c h e Königreich z a h l - r e i c h e R e v o l u t i o n e n durchgemacht habe, i n denen " p r i n c e s , w a r r i o r s , and n a t i v e s " d a s Land gegen a l l e A n g r e i f e r v o n außen v e r t e i d i g t hätten. U n t e r i h n e n a l l e n r a g e d e r berühm- t e König A r t h u r h e r v o r , d e r z u den größten b r i t i s c h e n H e l d e n zu zählen s e i .
Dennoch a b e r hätten e i n i g e n e i d i s c h e Ausländer ("envious a l i e n s " ) b e h a u p t e t , daß es e i n e n König A r t h u r i n d e r G e s c h i e h t e des Landes n i e m a l s gegeben habe. Sämtliche G e s c h i c h t e n

über A r t h u r s e i e n daher f i k t i v . A u f e i n e s o l c h e Argumenta- t i o n s w e i s e läßt s i c h d e r V e r f a s s e r a b e r n i c h t e i n . Es s e i e v i d e n t , so s a g t e r , daß a l t e und i n t e g r e H i s t o r i o g r a p h e n König A r t h u r a l s Sohn v o n U t e r p e n d r a g o n b e z e i c h n e t hätten, und daß A r t h u r f o l g l i c h aus u r a l t e m b r i t i s c h e m A d e l stamme.
Der Tenor d i e s e s V o r w o r t e s läuft a l s o e b e n f a l l s d a r a u f h i n a u s daß A r t h u r e i n e h i s t o r i s c h e G e s t a l t i s t , und daß d i e G e s c h i e h t e n über i h n d e r h i s t o r i s c h e n W a h r h e i t e n t s p r e c h e n .
D i e w e s e n t l i c h e n F a k t e n und D a t e n d e r A r t u s g e s c h i c h t e e n t - stammen wiederum d e r Historia Regum Britanniae und s i n d d a - h e r m i t denen d e r Famous History i d e n t i s c h . Wenn d i e Lektüre des chapbook dennoch e i n e n völlig a n d e r e n E i n d r u c k macht, so l i e g t d a s d a r a n , daß J . S. e i n e r s e i t s Zusammenhänge aus
d e r HRB genauer r e p r o d u z i e r t , a n d e r e r s e i t s a b e r völlig neue E p i s o d e n e i g e n e r E r f i n d u n g einfügt. Aus d e r HRB w i r d z. B.
M e r l i n s A n t e i l an A r t h u r s Zeugung übernommen. Da e s U t e r p e n - d r a g o n n i c h t g e l i n g t , I g r e y i n s K e u s c h h e i t z u überwinden, z i e h t e r den Z a u b e r e r M e r l i n z u H i l f e . J . S. i s t n i c h t ganz k l a r , w i e M e r l i n d i e gewünschte W i r k u n g z u s t a n d e b r a c h t e , entweder d a d u r c h , daß M e r l i n I g r e y i n d u r c h Z a u b e r e i täusch- t e , o d e r daß e r den König täuschend ähnlich i n d i e G e s t a l t des H e r z o g s v o n C o r n w a l l v e r w a n d e l t e . J e d e n f a l l s v e r b r a c h t e U t e r e i n e N a c h t b e i d e r schönen H e r z o g i n und z e u g t e König A r t h u r .
Im V e r g l e i c h zum e r s t e n chapbook fällt f e r n e r a u f , daß d i e ro/nance-Merkmale s e h r v i e l stärker b e t o n t werden. " A r t h u r seemed more t h a n man": s e i n P f e r d heißt B e a u c e p h a l o s , " a f t e r t h e name o f G r e a t A l e x a n d e r ' s h o r s e " . Das S c h w e r t A r t h u r s war fünf Fuß l a n g und a c h t Z o l l b r e i t . Es h a t t e z w e i s c h r e c k - l i c h e S c h n e i d e n . Ähnliches g i l t für d i e L a n z e d e s Königs:
s i e war a c h t E l l e n l a n g . D i e S p i t z e a u s massivem S t a h l war a l l e i n s e c h s P f u n d schwer. A r t h u r s P a n z e r war aus l e u c h t e n - dem G o l d h e r g e s t e l l t , e i n M e t a l l , d a s s i c h für e i n e Rüstung s i c h e r l i c h wenig e i g n e t . Überdies war d e r P a n z e r m i t E d e l - s t e i n e n r e i c h geschmückt. Angaben d i e s e r A r t s i n d t y p i s c h für d i e populäre U n t e r h a l t u n g s l i t e r a t u r , d i e s e l b s t b e i k u r - zen Erzählformen a u f d e k o r a t i v e s D e t a i l n i c h t v e r z i c h t e t .
Ähnlich w i e d i e A u t o r e n d e r französischen Chansons de geste sowie d e r d e s Alliterierenden Morte Arthure b e n u t z t d e r chapbook-hutor den K u n s t g r i f f d e s v o r v e r w e i s e n d e n Traumes.
Während s i c h a b e r i n den v o r a u s g e h e n d e n V e r s i o n e n d i e Träu- me a u f e x i s t e n t i e l l e D i n g e , z. B. A u f s t i e g und U n t e r g a n g b e -
z i e h e n , träumt A r t h u r h i e r v o n s e i n e r Aufnahme i n d i e T a - f e l r u n d e . Ähnlich w i e i n d e r T r a d i t i o n d e r HRB d e u t e n d i e umstehenden E d e l l e u t e und M e r l i n den Traum. A r t h u r macht s i c h s o g l e i c h an d e s s e n Umsetzung i n d i e W i r k l i c h k e i t . E r läßt e i n e H a l l e bauen m i t Glastürmen. I n d e r M i t t e e r r i c h t e t e r d i e T a f e l r u n d e für v i e r h u n d e r t R i t t e r . J e d e n Tag werden a u f d i e s e r T a f e l d i e e r l e s e n s t e n M a h l z e i t e n s e r v i e r t . D i e T a f e l r u n d e w i r d a l s R i t t e r o r d e n i n s t i t u t i o n a l i s i e r t . J e d e s M i t g l i e d erhält h u n d e r t Mark jährliche P e n s i o n - e i n für das E t h o s des A u t o r s und s e i n e A u f f a s s u n g v o n R i t t e r t u m s i - c h e r l i c h bedeutsamer P u n k t .

Plötzlich öffnen s i c h d i e S t a d t t o r e . D i e B r i t e n g l a u b e n an e i n e n A u s f a l l , a b e r e i n e Gruppe v o n Damen kommt h e r a u s , a n - geführt v o n G e n u r a , d e r S c h w e s t e r d e s dänischen Königs. S i e fällt König A r t h u r z u Füßen und b i t t e t um M i t l e i d für s i c h und i h r Land. Außerdem v e r s u c h t s i e , A r t h u r z u F r i e d e n s v e r - handlungen m i t i h r e m Bruder z u bewegen. A r t h u r s t i m m t b e r e i t - w i l l i g z u , da e r b e r e i t s " l o v e ' s p o i n t e d s h a f t s " fühlt. E r s c h e n k t d e r P r i n z e s s i n e i n e Krone aus G o l d , d i e m i t P e r l e n und Diamanten b e s e t z t i s t .
In den f o l g e n d e n V e r h a n d l u n g e n s t e l l t A r t h u r zunächst d i e Gründe für s e i n e n K r i e g d a r ; d i e Dänen haben d i e e n g l i s c h e Ostküste geplündert und g e b r a n d s c h a t z t . Dafür v e r l a n g t A r t h u r R e p a r a t i o n e n , d i e im e i n z e l n e n aufgezählt werden. Der Dänen- könig B u r n a m i s s a b e h a u p t e t , daß a l l d i e s e Piratenzüge ohne
s e i n W i s s e n und ohne s e i n e E i n w i l l i g u n g e r f o l g t e n . A r t h u r schlägt m i t schmachtendem B l i c k a u f Genura v o r , daß d i e s e e n t s c h e i d e n s o l l , w i e v i e l Wiedergutmachung z u z a h l e n i s t . I h r e B e d i n g u n g e n f i n d e n natürlich d i e v o l l s t e Zustimmung B u r n a m i s s a s , d e r z u m i n d e s t d a m i t g e r e c h n e t h a t t e , Norwegen zu v e r l i e r e n . B e i d e S e i t e n äußern s i c h über den W a f f e n s t i l l - s t a n d i n Ausdrücken höchster Z u f r i e d e n h e i t .
A r t h u r eröffnet Genura s e i n e L i e b e und w i r d v o n i h r e r - hört. B e i d e werden nun a u f dänischem Boden v o n einem b r i t i -
s c h e n E r z b i s c h o f e n t s p r e c h e n d den R e g e l n d e r b r i t i s c h e n K i r - che g e t r a u t . Es w i r d e i n F e s t g e f e i e r t , d a s vornehmer und großzügiger i n Rom n i c h t hätte s t a t t f i n d e n können.
E i n w e i t e r e r i n t e r e s s a n t e r Zug d e s chapbook b e s t e h t d a r i n daß König A r t h u r nach s e i n e r Rückkehr von dem e r s t e n F e l d z u g
f e s t s t e l l e n muß, daß Genura e i n e n Sohn g e b o r e n h a t . D u r c h d i e F o r m u l i e r u n g w i l l J . S. a n d e u t e n , daß A r t h u r über d i e s e T a t s a c h e v e r w u n d e r t i s t ; o f f e n b a r i s t e r n i c h t d e r V a t e r . D i e s e r merkwürdige Zug g e h t v i e l l e i c h t a u f den A l l i t e r i e r e n - den Morte Arthure zurück,wo e s i n V e r s 3550 heißt, daß M o r d r e d m i t Waynore e i n K i n d g e z e u g t h a t . I n den m e i s t e n a n d e r e n V e r s i o n e n w i r d G u i n e v e r e a l s u n f r u c h t b a r d a r g e s t e l l t E n t s p r e c h e n d a l t e r Volksüberlieferung mußten s i c h F r a u e n i n und um G l a s t o n b u r y s o g a r hüten, m i t G u i n e v e r e s Grab i n B e r u h rung z u kommen, da d i e bloße Berührung U n f r u c h t b a r k e i t z u r F o l g e haben k o n n t e .
Neu eingefügt und w a h r s c h e i n l i c h e i n Unikum i n d e r a r t h u - r i s c h e n L i t e r a t u r s i n d d i e E r l e b n i s s e A r t h u r s a u f d e r Rück- f a h r t aus dem H e i l i g e n Land. Nachdem A r t h u r v o r d e r S t a d t J e r u s a l e m e i n e n riesengroßen H e i d e n im Zweikampf b e s i e g t
und d a d u r c h J e r u s a l e m gewonnen h a t , macht e r s i c h a u f den Heimweg, d a d i e S a c h s e n i n s e i n Land e i n g e f a l l e n s i n d . A u f dem Rückweg l a n d e t A r t h u r i n K a r t h a g o , wo e r v o n v i e r h u n - d e r t Mohren überfallen w i r d . Zwei D r i t t e l davon werden e r - s c h l a g e n , d e r R e s t f l i e h t . Sechzehn Löwen aus dem Muritanian Forest g r e i f e n König A r t h u r an. E r tötet m i t H i l f e s e i n e r R i t - t e r zwölf, d i e a n d e r e n werden i n d i e F l u c h t g e s c h l a g e n . Auch d i e Begegnung m i t den P i r a t e n i n d e r Gegend v o n M a l t a i s t e i n n e u e r Zug d e s chapbook. A r t h u r nimmt d i e S c h i f f e d e r P i r a t e n und b e f r e i t a l l e Gefangenen. D i e P i r a t e n s e l b s t a b e r werden getötet.
Schließlich i s t a u c h d a s Ende v o n A r t h u r s L a u f b a h n b e - m e r k e n s w e r t und e i n m a l i g . E r beschließt, das k r i e g e r i s c h e Leben a u f z u g e b e n und heiligmäßig z u l e b e n . Der A r t h u r v o n M. S. w i r k e n bürgerlich- philiströs, z u m i n d e s t a b e r u n r i t t e r l i c h , s o , wenn e r f e s t - s t e l l t , daß den T a f e l r u n d e n r i t t e r n e i n e R e n t e a u s g e s e t z t
wurde. Ähnlich heißt es z u B e g i n n d e s Dänenkrieges, A r t h u r habe d i e T a f e l r u n d e ergänzt, da z w a n z i g R i t t e r g e f a l l e n bzw.
g e s t o r b e n s e i e n . Auch d i e s i s t e i n e common sense-Bemerkung, d i e w i r i n den k l a s s i s c h e n romances v e r g e b l i c h suchen wer- den. I n t e r e s s a n t i s t auch d e r H i n w e i s , daß A r t h u r a u f dä- n i s c h e m Boden v o n einem b r i t i s c h e n B i s c h o f e n t s p r e c h e n d den R e g e l n d e r b r i t i s c h e n K i r c h e g e t r a u t w i r d . H i e r w i r d e i n - d e u t i g a u f König J a k o b a n g e s p i e l t , d e r s e i n e r B r a u t , Anne von Dänemark, d i e a u f dem Wege nach S c h o t t l a n d w a r , e n t g e - g e n r e i s t e und s i e i n O s l o h e i r a t e t e . Das neuvermählte P a a r v e r b r a c h t e den W i n t e r i n Dänemark. O f f e n b a r w i l l d e r A u t o r des chapbook an d i e s e r S t e l l e d a r a n e r i n n e r n , daß d i e könig- l i c h e Ehe nach p r o t e s t a n t i s c h e m R i t u s g e s c h l o s s e n worden tyar - möglicherweise, um Befürchtungen z u z e r s t r e u e n , d i e b e i Annes Übertritt zum K a t h o l i z i s m u s i n E n g l a n d e n t s t a n d e n waren.
A u f g r u n d d e s N i e d e r g a n g e s d e r F l o t t e u n t e r James I . waren d i e e n g l i s c h e n K a u f m a n n s s c h i f f e j a h r z e h n t e l a n g den a l g e r i - schen und spanisch-flämischen P i r a t e n mehr oder w e n i g e r h i l f l o s a u s g e l i e f e r t : " i n 1625 t h e y c a r r i e d o f f lOOO o f o u r seamen a s s l a v e s , and t o o k t w e n t y - s e v e n v e s s e l s i n t e n d a y s "
S e l b s t d i e Küsten E n g l a n d s waren w i e z u r Z e i t d e r Dänenein- fälle v o r den Seeräubern n i c h t s i c h e r . D i e T a t s a c h e , daß d e r Britenkönig m i t den P i r a t e n k u r z e n Prozeß macht, muß v o n den L e s e r n d e s chapbook a l s e i n e A r t A u f f o r d e r u n g an d e n H e r r - s c h e r v e r s t a n d e n worden s e i n , es A r t h u r g l e i c h z u t u n .
Im U n t e r s c h i e d z u a l l e n a n d e r e n A r t u s v e r s i o n e n werden d i e Kriegszüge d e s H e r r s c h e r s d u r c h P r o v o k a t i o n e n und f e i n d s e l i - ge Einfälle v o n außen begründet. Während i n d e r m i t t e l a l t e r -
l i e h e n A r t u s t r a d i t i o n Ruhmbegierde und E r o b e r u n g s l u s t d i e t r e i b e n d e n F a k t o r e n w a r e n , v e r t e i d i g t s i c h A r t h u r b e i J . S.
gegen F e i n d e , d i e s e i n Land aus n i e d r i g e n M o t i v e n a n g e g r i f - f e n haben. V o r d e r E r o b e r u n g Dänemarks v e r w e i s t König A r t h u r s e i n e A d e l i g e n a u f d i e Küsteninvasion d e r Dänen, u n t e r denen v o r a l l e m d i e Bevölkerung des östlichen T e i l e s d e r I n s e l z u
l e i d e n h a t t e . Aber auch d e r K r i e g gegen F r a n k r e i c h w i r d d u r c h unerhörte G r e u e l t a t e n d e r F r a n z o s e n begründet, d i e d i e e n g l i s c h e Südküste überfallen und geplündert haben.
A r t h u r a n t w o r t e t m i t einem V e r g e l t u n g s z u g d u r c h ganz F r a n k - r e i c h . Nachdem M a r s e i l l e g e f a l l e n i s t , e r g e b e n s i c h d i e F e i n - de.
G r o t e s k und w a h r s c h e i n l i c h auch für d i e d a m a l i g e n L e s e r unglaubwürdig und u n a k z e p t a b e l a b e r s c h e i n t e s , daß auch d e r F e l d z u g gegen König Magor von I r l a n d d a m i t begründet w i r d , daß d i e I r e n i n E n g l a n d e i n g e f a l l e n s i n d . Es i s t schwer v o r - s t e l l b a r , daß d i e zeitgenössischen L e s e r b e i e i n e r s o l c h e n F e s t s t e l l u n g n i c h t g e s c h m u n z e l t haben; d i e u n t e r s c h w e l l i g e message von J . S. b e s t e h t i n dem H i n w e i s , daß d i e grausamen K r i e g e i n I r l a n d n u r b e r e c h t i g t wären, wenn es z u v o r i r i s c h e Raubzüge und Plünderungen i n E n g l a n d gegeben hätte.
A k t u e l l e z e i t g e s c h i c h t l i c h e Bezüge s i n d auch b e i d e r D a r - s t e l l u n g des l e t z t e n L e b e n s a b s c h n i t t e s v o n A r t h u r z u e r k e n - nen. Der König b a u t nämlich S c h u l e n und C o l l e g e s , e i n Faktum, das n i e m a l s z u v o r i n d e r a r t h u r i s c h e n T r a d i t i o n v o n dem Kö- n i g b e h a u p t e t worden war. James I . , e i n e r d e r ganz wenigen e n g l i s c h e n Könige, d e r G e d i c h t e und g e l e h r t e Abhandlungen verfaßte und d e r für s e i n e G e l e h r s a m k e i t , b e s o n d e r s auch s e i n
I n t e r e s s e an t h e o l o g i s c h e n F r a g e n berühmt war, h a t t e d i e
Universität E d i n b u r g h i n s Leben g e r u f e n und s t a t t e t e D u b l i n s T r i n i t y C o l l e g e m i t e i n e r R e n t e sowie beträchtlichen Lände- r e i e n i n U l s t e r a u s . V i e l l e i c h t a b e r haben spätere L e s e r d e s chapbook d i e s e A n s p i e l u n g a u f den königlichen Förderer d e r Künste und W i s s e n s c h a f t e n auch a l s e i n e v e r s t e c k t e K r i t i k an König K a r l I I . v e r s t a n d e n , d e r nach s e i n e r Rückkehr aus F r a n k r e i c h d a s S c h u l - und B i l d u n g s w e s e n im Lande sträflich vernachlässigt h a t t e . B e s o n d e r s überraschend i s t d i e F e s t - s t e l l u n g , A r t h u r habe den Bau v o n K i r c h e n und Klöstern geför- d e r t ; f a l l s auch d i e s e Aussage d u r c h den L e s e r a u f zeitgenös- s i s c h e Verhältnisse angewendet werden s o l l t e , paßt s i e n i c h t zu dem s o n s t e h e r p r o t e s t a n t i s c h e n Tenor d e s chapbook.
6. D i e A n a l y s e d e r chapbooks über König A r t h u r e r g i b t , daß auch d i e K o n s u m l i t e r a t u r d i e s e l b e n Tendenzen a u f w e i s t wie d i e r e s t l i c h e A r t u s l i t e r a t u r d e r Z e i t . Sämtliche w e s e n t -
l i c h e n v o n d e r a r t h u r i s c h e n T r a d i t i o n abweichenden M o t i v e , F a k t e n und Zusammenhänge haben ganz o f f e n s i c h t l i c h d i e Funk- t i o n zeitgenössischer A k t u a l i s i e r u n g ; s i e s t e l l e n e x e m p l a r i - sche H a n d l u n g s a n w e i s u n g e n bzw. K r i t i k an Mißständen d a r .
M. P.'s V e r s i o n muß s e l b s t a u f den g u t w i l l i g e n F r e u n d volkstümlicher L i t e r a t u r abstoßend w i r k e n . Der A u t o r k o n n t e s i c h e r l i c h b e s s e r und l o g i s c h e r s c h r e i b e n ; d a s w i r d j e d e r bestätigen, d e r P a r k e r s B a l l a d e n k e n n e n g e l e r n t h a t . V i e l l e i c h t i s t d a s chapbook n i c h t v o n ihm s e l b s t , s o n d e r n posthum v o n einem F r e u n d veröffentlicht worden. Im M a i 1660 war M. P. b e - r e i t s t o t .
Der S t i l des ganzen Werkes w i r k t b e f r e m d l i c h . D i e m e i s t e n Sätze s c h a c h t e l t M. P. a u f k o m p l i z i e r t e Weise i n e i n a n d e r ,
w o b e i e r i n s b e s o n d e r e v o n d e r e c k i g e n Klammer überreichlichen G e b r a u c h macht. S i m p l e S a c h v e r h a l t e verschlüsselt e r preziös, manchmal e u p h u i s t i s c h , so daß d e r s e m a n t i s c h e G e h a l t vom L e -
s e r mühselig e r s c h l o s s e n werden muß oder sogar manchmal u n - k l a r b l e i b t .
Das gesamte Werk i s t , i n s b e s o n d e r e im e r s t e n T e i l , v o l l von E i g e n v e r w e i s e n (im nächsten K a p i t e l w i r d d a r g e s t e l l t ,
im v e r g a n g e n e n K a p i t e l wurde g e s a g t ) und w i r k t d a h e r w i e d e r e r s t e E n t w u r f e i n e s w i s s e n s c h a f t l i c h e n R e f e r a t e s . D i e Q u e l - l e n werden m e i s t n i c h t g e n a n n t und schon g a r n i c h t z i t i e r t - dem L e s e r h a t z u genügen, daß es s i c h um zuverlässige Q u e l - l e n h a n d e l t . T y p i s c h i s t d i e B e g l a u b i g u n g d e r L i s t e v o n T a - f e l r u n d e n r i t t e r n d u r c h V e r w e i s a u f e i n a l t e s Chaucer-Manu- s k r i p t . T e i l w e i s e g i b t e s a b e r auch b l i n d e V o r v e r w e i s e auf Themen und E r e i g n i s s e , d i e dann n i c h t ausgeführt w e r d e n , so, wenn d e r i r i s c h e König um e i n Gespräch e r s u c h t , über das dann n i c h t b e r i c h t e t w i r d . M e h r e r e H a n d l u n g s k e t t e n s i n d nur aus d e r K e n n t n i s d e s A r t u s r o m a n s z u r e k o n s t r u i e r e n . V e r s c h i e d e n t l i c h g l a u b t man, Q u e l l e n und Vorläufer z u e r -
kennen, d i e M. P. mißverstanden o d e r i n e i n e n f a l s c h e n Zu- sammenhang g e b r a c h t h a t . I n k o n s i s t e n z e n f i n d e n s i c h i n ähn- l i c h e r Z a h l w i e i n den L a n g v e r s i o n e n , n u r s i n d s i e i n einem
chapbook p s y c h o l o g i s c h unverständlich - über v i e r u n d z w a n - z i g S e i t e n wäre Homer h e l l w a c h g e b l i e b e n ! K i n d l i c h w i r k e n d i e r h e t o r i s c h e n F r a g e n , d i e m e i s t a b r u p t z u einem neuen G e g e n s t a n d überleiten.
A l l e V o r s t e l l u n g e n über a n d e r e Länder, Menschen und m e n s c h l i c h e B e z i e h u n g e n machen e i n e n k l i s c h e e a r t i g - s t e r e o - t y p e n E i n d r u c k . Z w i s c h e n den F e i n d e n A r t h u r s w i r d n u r i n - s o f e r n d i f f e r e n z i e r t , a l s d i e a b w e r t e n d e n E p i t h e t a zunehmen, j e w e i t e r südlich d i e N a t i o n e n wohnen. N a t i o n a l i s t i s c h e Über- h e b l i c h k e i t w i r d auch im Verhältnis z u Dänemark, I r l a n d und S c h o t t l a n d spürbar. An chapbooks d i e s e r A r t können s i c h n u r a n s p r u c h s l o s e Gemüter g e l a b t haben.
E i n e n s e h r v i e l günstigeren E i n d r u c k macht a u f uns d i e V e r s i o n v o n J . S.; auch s i e w i r k t t e i l w e i s e summarisch und g e n e r a l i s i e r e n d , und manchmal kann man s i c h e i n e s Lächelns n i c h t e r w e h r e n , a b e r n u r s e l t e n r e a g i e r t d e r L e s e r m i t Ab- wehr. V o r a l l e m d e r e r s t e T e i l v o n J . S. l i e s t s i c h r e c h t
flüssig. Der A u t o r kann spannend erzählen, h a t e i n e n r o t e n F a d e n , a c h t e t a u f L o g i k und S t r i n g e n z und a r g u m e n t i e r t b e s -

A l l e r d i n g s können w i r b e i J . S. v o n e i n e r tragedie o d e r einem casus n i c h t mehr s p r e c h e n .
