Preface

This guide is designed for the IBM 3205 console operator. It contains simple steps to follow when a problem occurs. Store this guide in the pocket of the console so that is readily available when needed.

Second Edition (March, 1985)

Chapter 1. Indicators, Switches and Controls

The IBM 3205 has visual indicators, operator messages, audible indicators, as well as various switches and controls. This section describes the indicators, switches, and controls.

1.1 Indicators

The visual indicators are the power-on light and the status light. The power-on light. which is on the video unit, goes on when power is applied. The status light is on the logic unit and indicates machine status, depending on the setting of the Test/Normal switch. When the switch is set to the Test position, the status light blinks after diagnostics verify the operation of the IBM 3205 hardware. When the switch is set to Normal. the status light is on when the IBM 3205 receives data or commands from the host processor.

The bottom line on the video screen is used to indicate machine status and error conditions. These messages are described more thoroughly in "Operator Messages."

Another indicator is the audible alarm which is used to attract the operator's attention and to generate the keyboard click sound. The audible alarm is adjustable.

1.2 Switches

• The Power On/Off (I 0) switch on the video unit controls power to the display console.

• The Test/Normal switch on the logic unit sets the IBM 3205 to offline test mode or to normal mode of operation.

• The Monocase/Dualcase (A/A,a) switch is on the logic unit. When the switch is set to monocase (A). all characters are displayed in uppercase. When set to dualcase (Aa), the characters are displayed in

uppercase and lowercase.

• The security keylock on the logic unit is a key-controlled lock for the IBM 3205. When the key is in the off position, the screen is blank (except for the cursor and operator information area) and data cannot be entered, modified, or displayed. The key can be removed when the key lock is in either position.

• A color switch (00/0000) selects the number of colors that can be used on the screen.

• The setup switches are located on the under side of the keyboard. These switches, set by the CE at installation, identify the keyboard language. The switch setting for your keyboard is marked in the label adjacent to the switches.

1.3 Controls

• The brightness control on the video unit allows you to adjust the intensity of the display image.

• The audible alarm volume control knob at the rear of the logic unit allows you to adjust the sound level of the alarm and click.

• Identify the faulty unit before you call for service. This will greatly reduce service time.

• Select the problem area from the following list and go to the indicated page for details.

3.1 Problem Reporting

When you call for service, describe your symptom and report the number associated with that problem identification code.

3.2 Problem Identification Codes

The numbers for your machine are filled in by the CE at installation.

3.4 Power On Light Stays Off

• Ensure that the Power On/Off (I 0) switch is set to I (On).

• Check that the power cord is securely plugged in the outlet and in the IBM 3205.

• Verify that the outlet iSVllorking, or try a working outlet.

• If the problem still exists, goto 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code B.

3.5 Status Light Stays Off

1. Set the Test/Normal switch to Test. The Status light should start blinking in about 5 seconds.

2. Is the Status light blinking?

• Yes· An IBM 3205 problem cannot be identified. Continue with the host processor problem determination or call for service.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code L.

3.6 Display Problems

1. Ensure that Power On/Off (I 0) switch is set to I (On).

2. Turn the Security Key counterclockwise (off).

3. Turn the Security Key clockwise (on).

4. Turn the Brightness Control Knob fully clockwise.

5. Set the Test/Normal switch to Test.

6. Is the Status light blinking?

• Yes - Continue with step 7.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code L.

7. Is the test pattern correct? (See Figure 1-2 on page 1-2.)

• Yes - No IBM 3205 problem can be identified. Continue with the host processor problem determination or call for service.

• No - Continue with step 8.

8. Does transferring the 00/0000 switch change the test pattern?

• Yes - Leave the switch in 0000 and continue with step 9.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code A.

• Not sure (part or all of pattern is missing or too distorted to tell) -go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code A.

10. Does transferring the A/ A,a switch change the test pattern?

• Yes - Continue with step 11.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code L.

3.7 Keyboard Problems

1. Set the Test/Normal switch to Test.

2. Is the Status light blinking?

• Yes - Continue with step 3.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code L.

3. Is the test pattern correct? (See Figure 1 -2 on page 1 -2.)

• Yes - Continue with step 4.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code C.

4. Is the block cursor blinking in area

• Yes - Continue with step 5.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code K.

5. Hefer to the appropriate figure on page 3-4 and 3-5. Press the keys you want to test. And verify that the correct characters are displayed.

6. Are the correct characters displayed?

• Yes - Continue with step 7.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code K.

Note: The keyboard setup switches may be wrong.

7. Is the normal cursor displayed?

• Yes - No keyboard problem has been identified; call for service if the problem continues.

• No - Go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code L.

3.8 Cursor Problems

Follow the instructions for keyboard problems 3.7.

3.9 Security Key Problems

• The display fails to go blank when the security key is turned off; go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting" on page 3-1; use problem identification code S .

• The security key message is displayed when the security key is turned on; go to 3.1, "Problem Reporting"

on page 3-1; use problem identification code S.

3.10 Audible Alarm Problems

1. Set the Power On/Off (I
