3. Read the text about extreme sports.
Extreme Sports
The phrase “extreme sports” was first used by the BBC when the TV channel was planning the Extreme Games (X-Games) in 1995. Extreme sports differ from traditional sports because of the uncontrollable factors. Athletes in these sports compete not only against other athletes, but also against environmental obstacles and conditions. These environmental conditions are often weather and terrain determined, like wind, snow, water and mountains. These natural circum- stances cannot be controlled. That is why they have an immediate effect on the results in extreme sport activities or events. Some of these sports have been known as “outlaw sports” for a long time.
A few years ago, they were banned in many areas though for being too dangerous. Some people considered them as “alternative sports” to older, established sports. While the older generation of sportsmen is still sticking to their traditional sports, the new athletes have adopted an alternative life style, too.
Now extreme sports are being integrated into the mainstream more and more and snowboarding was the first extreme sport to become an Olympic event.
