International Soft Matter Conference 2007
1 – 5 October 2007 Eurogress Aachen
January 2007 2nd Announcement
1st Announcement
Aachen, as conference location Aachen is a hospitable town.
Even the Romans felt at home here. Situated in the midst of green areas, a city, and yet easily accessible.
Aachen is pedestrian friendly:
you can comfortably explore the town on foot. Whether you go on a shopping trip, a health cure or for a confe- rence: Aachen has it all!
Aachen is the city of water.
And this is not because it rains a lot there, but because hot springs have been bubb-
ling out of the earth from time immemorial. The Romans enclosed the springs, which have temperatures between 38 and 78 degrees, with walls and developed them, and started using them. Thus, the largest Roman baths of West Germania were built in Aachen.
Charlemagne is considered to be the true founder of the city. He has been dominating the history of Aachen for 1200 years and he has shaped the city permanently. The central buildings were the Royal Hall, today’s city hall, and Aachen cathedral, the centre of which – an octagonal domed building – has survived in the original until now. This rotunda was consecrated around the year 800. It is here where the famous marble throne of Charlemagne is to be found, which was ascended by thirty German kings between 936 and 1531.
Scope of the Soft Matter Conference:
This conference will bring together students and scientists interested in soft matter systems such as polymers, colloids, surfactants, membranes, biomaterials and their composites.
Soft Matter is characterized by multi component mixtures, large ranges of length and time scales and many interacting degrees of freedom, leading to complex structures, phase behaviour and dynamics. This implies high sensitivity to external fields and ubiquitous and significant non-equili- brium phenomena.
Soft matter science requires an interdisciplinary approach connecting theoretical, computational and experimental physics, physical chemistry, material science and biology.
A special focus of discussion in this context will be the application of soft matter concepts to biological and bio- mimetic systems.
In this field, basic science and a broad range of modern technological application – encompassing also many aspects of nano-science – are closely related. These links will be emphasized during this conference, thereby foster- ing the exchange between academia and industry.
There will be four types of presentations: plenary talks, invited and contributed talks, and posters. These will be chosen by the program committee in cooperation with the advisory board. The contributed talks will be selected from submitted abstracts.
The Conference is supported by the European Network of Excellence “SoftComp”.
