5 The line numbers are those of the new edition; Dow's line numbers are given in parentheses.

In the margin of his text Dow labeled with letters of the Roman alphabet the various cutters who inscribed the text. In the pages which follow these labels are referred to at several points. The reader may well find it helpful to consult Dow's text.

Line 54 (53). No legible traces of the original text remain. The correction was made, as is readily apparent from Plate 2, a, by a different cutter and, therefore, subsequent to B's work on this panel.

Diotimos, the correct name, was shorter by one letter than the incorrect name.

Line 55 (54). This word is indented 0.067 m.

Line 59 (58). Vacat 0.013 m.

Line 60 (59). Vacat 0.009 m.

Lines 76-84 (78-86). Agora I 5045, after having been attributed to B on the basis of letter shape, was found to join here. Cf. Hesperia, XXXVI, 1967, pp. 245-247.

Line 76 (78). The organization of this line, i.e. divided between two separate entries, is unparalleled in the other parts inscribed by B; he probably compensated for it by leaving a large uninscribed space to articulate them visually, thus the restored blank. Vacat 0.014 m.

Line 78 (80). Vacat 0.03 m.

Line 81 (83). B omitted the left horizontal of the omega.

Line 87 (89). Vacat 0.012 m.

Line 88 (90). The bottom stroke of the sigma was never inscribed (P1. 2, b).

Line 89 (91). Vacat 0.013 m.

Line 90 (92). Vacat 0.007 m. The gouge of recent origin visible in this and the following line (P1. 10, a) is due, the ephor Dr. Mitsos recalled, to damage in the fighting at the end of the Second World War.

At that time the stele was set up in the courtyard outside the museum.

Line 91 (93). A glance at Plate 10, a will reveal that a different cutter inscribed this last entry in a space originally left blank between this panel and the next.

Year III (101/0 B.c.), lines 123-126 (125-128) (P1. 10, b).

THE INSCRIPTIONS BY THE II2 1028 CUTTER Year VI? (98/7), lines 147-149 (149-151) (P1. 11, a).

Height of letters, 0.013 m.

For attribution, note tau in line 148 and alpha and phi in line 149.

Line 149 (151). Under the first vertical of nu appears a small omikron (P1. 11, a). In shape, size, and location it corresponds to one of the round elements of phi. No traces of erasure appear. This indi- cates that B, after inscribing the initial alpha, took his eye from the stone to his working copy where it fell on the letter following the second alpha, viz., phi, which he then began to inscribe. He perceived his mistake at once and inscribed nu over the small portion of the phi without troubling to erase.

The large size of these letters, compared with those of the second-year panel, is due, in part, to the large lettering preceding. Thisdoes not appear to be the principal reason for them, however, for Hand E, who made the entry immediately preceding, was not deterred from making small letters (ca. 0.007 m.) according to his usual practice. B, rather, clearly intended to make thi entry fill the space at the bottom of the first column; he achieved his purpose by making large letters and by including the patronymic (usually omitted in this column) thus extending the entry to three lines. This shows that when he inscribed these lines he knew that this was to be the last entry of the first column; it also suggests that entries had already been made in column two.

Year V (99/8 B.C.), lines 162-163 (164-165) (P1. 11, b).

Height of letters, ca. 0.011 m.

For attribution, note the epsilons in line 162 and tau in line 163.

162. otsE d7TErCOKav Tas a7rapXas (rm HpoKAXov[s a]pXovTos

Since the cutter who inscribed the first entries of a given year usually inscribed the heading at the same time, the fact that B cut the heading for this year rather than E

(who made the first entries) suggests that B inscribed it in advance, at a time when he made another entry. Most probably, he cut it when he made the addition in lines 147-149. Since the second column was begun by Hand D, who inscribed continuously to 160 (line 161 is left blank), B's addition at the end of column I appears to have been the last (speaking chronologically) made in the first column. He was instructed, it appears, to inscribe both this last entry and the heading for the record of the fifth year.

Incised guidelines with an interval of 0.012 m. occur here; they commence at line 228, where Hand G began, and end at line 238. Since B did not usually incise guidelines, it is probable that G, who inscribed to line 236, also cut the guidelines in preparation for this entry.

Year VII (continued), lines 243-244 (247-248) (P1. 12).

Height of letters: line 243, ca. 0.015 m.; line 244, 0.013 m.

The letter height corresponds to the interval between the guidelines which are drawn here. The guidelines begin here and continue to line 256 (i.e. to the end of Hand F's lettering); except for the first line they all have the same interval, 0.013 m. The identical interval and the knowledge that it was not B's practice to incise them indicate that Hand F incised them in order that he might correctly place the entries he was to inscribe; he left the first two lines uninscribed, and inscribed to line 256. F thus in- scribed lines 245-256 before B inscribed 243-244. From this it appears likely that B inscribed lines 243-244 and 257 at the same time. It is even possible that he inscribed lines 237-238 at this same time.

Lines 241-242 by Hand H do not have guidelines; H therefore cut before F. In addition, Hand X (lines 239-240) probably preceded H, for it is difficult to believe that H could have left space knowingly for X's entry, the tardy contribution of the
