Two options are available: erase DIRECTORY ONLY, or erase WHOLE DISC. When the DIRECTORY ONLY option is specified, only the directory and sector 1 are
cleared. Entries are replaced 'by x'OO'. When the WHOLE DISC option is chosen, the entire disc is cleared and all entries are replaced by x'OO'.
After this parameter is established and you have pressed RETURN, the screen displays the warning:
MAINTAIN DIRECTORY disc initialization begins. A progress indicator appears on the screen indicating the current location being erased: CLEARING SECTOR sssss.
When the process has been completed, the screen displays the MAINTAIN DIRECTORY menu.
Use this option to change the directory capacity,

where: "xxxxx" is the current number of maximum entries;
"yyyyy" is the number of entries currently in use ·

"zzzzz" is the number of entries presently available (the difference between xxxxx and yyyyy).
Enter the desired directory size.
The utility must RESERVE the specified disc in order
to function. If any other task has a file open on the disc, or has the disc RESERVED or DISABLED, the screen displays the following message:
UNABLE TO RESERVE DISC (n) TO CHANGE DIRECTORY CR TO RETURN, CTL-IV TO EXIT
If you press CTL-IV to abort the procedure, the
utility returns the MAINTAIN DIRECTORY menu shown in Figure 3-10. Or you may make sure that all files are closed and the disc is not RESERVED or DISABLED, and press RETURN to attempt the procedure again.
After this disc has been successfully RESERVED, the utility displays a verification message:

If the directory is being expanded and files currently reside in the area required for the directory, the screen displays:

Once information has been entered in response to the prompts listed above, the utility goes through the following steps to change the size of the directory:
1. The utility backs up the directory, displaying the message:

2. Files residing in the area required for expansion are moved to the first available location.
3. The expansion or reduction process begins and the message is displayed:

EFFECTS OF THE UTILITY
The parameters of the MAINTAIN GAP FILE utility and their options are as follows:
1. FUNCTION - Available options are to DISPLAY GAP FILE or to UPDATE GAP FILE.
2. OUTPUT DEVICE - The listing or display can be sent to the TERMINAL, the LINE PRINTER, or to a SELECTED PRINTER (if more than one printer is configured). If the SELECTED PRINTER option is chosen, the program prompts for the name of the printer:

Two different displays result from the MAINTAIN GAP FILE utility, depending on whether the user has elected to DISPLAY or UPDATE the gap file.
