Chronic obstruc ve pulmona-

ry disease (COPD) is a chronic infl amm-

atory disease of the airways. The spirometry is

the gold-standard in the diagnosis of the disease and

Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) is used to gra- de the severity of the disease and is the strongest predictor of

the mortality in these pa ents. However, COPD pa ents have sys- temic infl amma on that is not actually refl ected by FEV1. The analysis

of breath air is not a new concept. Vola le organic compounds (VOC) are un l now inves gated by several methods in lung diseases, such as airway infec ons, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, asthma and COPD. In our study we used the technology of the ion mobility spectrometry to detect VOCs in the exhaled breath of pa ents with COPD. The ion mobili- ty spectrometry allows a non-invasive, easy and fast detec on of VOCs and especially in very low concentra ons. The purpose of this study was to iden fy peaks of VOCs that could discri-

minate COPD pa ents from healthy subjects as well as to determine whether specifi c VOC peaks could

diff eren ate COPD pa ents with diff e- rent severity groups.
