Notes on the Syriac Chronicle of 846.

(ZDMG., LI, 569ff.) By E. W. Brooks.

In the present number of this Journal p. 153 appeared some

notes by Dr. Fraenkel on my edition of a portion of the above

chronicle. Several of Dr. Fraenkel's criticisms and suggestions, such

as the certain emendation oj^V**/ ^'^^ ^■^«♦Z P- 1- 2

(Michael has in fact Jojo^^a/) and the correction of the slip

JI[Vq]2Dj1. for JL[;]X5JL at p. 578 1. 1, I gladly accept; but there

remain the following points which appear to call for an answer.

p. 574 1. 16. I do not see any difficulty in the statement

as it stands. There were no doubt many Syrians who had fled

into Asia Minor to escape from Arab oppression. This the Arab

rulers would regard as defrauding them of tribute and would there¬

fore be glad to bring them back when an opportunity offered.

This explains why after bringing them back to their own country

they let them go free : they were wanted, not as slaves, but as

tribute-paying subjects. It is not necessary to take the chronicler

so literally as to suppose that the Syrians were in the neighbour¬

hood of Sardis and Pergamos : they may have been in the more

easterly provinces traversed by the invaders on their way.

p. 575 1. 8. I cannot understand why | ^ rN-'> [^xii.]

is impossible ; and Dr. Fraenkel's emendation is founded upon a

misunderstanding. Where I have supplied words in brackets, it is

not because there is something wanting in the sense, but because

there is a gap of corresponding length in the MS, and Dr. Fraenkel

will scarcely contend for so violent an alteration as ■N'*^ V> for Äwfco

foUowed by a space long enough for .^\.» . . Moreover on examining

the MS again I find that the first letter of the missing word must

be Mu , since it begins with a projecting horizontal line, which does not occur in any other letter.

1. ult. and p. 576 1. 1. When first I examined this passage,

I thought with Dr. Fraenkel that J^i,V) was an error for )bOi.V/;

but, finding that Michael has n^o^^/ and Theophanes xaTaanogas,

I saw no justification for changing the text. In the Hexaplar of

Josh. 21. 2 and Judg. 1. 18 (I take the references from Smith)

the word \t)iJi) seems to mean 'agricultural land round a town',

which is just what we require here.

p. 676 1. 5. The J. of the word printed J)^[ji-»]» is quite

clear, so that to read Jj-^JO with Dr. Fraenkel involves* a departure

from the MS. Jfcas»>D is, I admit, not the word which we should

expect here, but I cannot think of any other possible word that

is consistent with the MS.

p. 575 1. 7. Dr. Frankel's comment upon this passage depends

upon the same misunderstanding as that noticed above. There is

nearly half a line missing here.

p. 578 1. 17. 18. I do not think that any supplement is

required. The sentence is a slipshod one, which would not be

written by any literary writer , but it does not follow that it was

not written by our chronicler; we find in fact an exactly similar

one at p. 572 1. 3, 4.

• With regard to the difficult jLaiz^ .n«o>i « (p. 578 1. 2>

possibly we may render 'to go out to prayers', i. e. from theirj

towns and villages to the place frequented by Morutho. I

With respect to Dr. Fraenkel's concluding remarks I certainly,

hope to be able to publish the whole chronicle at no very distant]

date : if the matter had depended only on my own wishes, it would,

have been published before now. \

nischen Haggada zu thun, was früher Angeführtes vervollständigen

soll.
