ear Members, Many thanks to our friends at the Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, who visited us at our Sommerfest. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with them and with our other neighboring German Clubs. Also, congratulations go to the Ladies Division for their successful Flea market at the Sommerfest. As the wet summer falls behind us, we look forward to restarting our regular Club programs. There is truly something for everyone with all of the programs offered. Also, still ahead are some of our biggest events. On September 15th, we will march in the Steuben Parade with a 45-piece band from Schienen, Germany. They will also be at the Club after the parade and on Sunday, September 16th, at our Deutscher Tag. Our Club Oktoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 13th. The Oktoberfest in particular will require many volunteers, as it is an all- day event and we expect to have many guests. Please volunteer to help out at one or both of these events, so we can put on the high-quality affair that we are so well known for. The Big Raffle will also be drawn during the Oktoberfest. Please stop by the Club and purchase your tickets before then. The Club will be celebrating its 83rd Anniversary on Sunday, October 7th. Tickets for this event are on sale now at the bar. It begins with a cocktail hour at 2:30 PM and has an open bar all afternoon. Come join us for the entertainment and great food. Please see the inside of this newsletter for more details on this and the many other events. Remember, it’s your Club, support it, use it and enjoy it!

President’s Message

L

GERMAN LANGUAGE WORKShOP

DC German Lan- guage Students have formed a Summer Work-

shop, which

meets every Thursday at 6:30 PM

in the Grove . This workshop differs from the “Stammtisch” which meets monthly on Fridays, where everyone will be expected to speak and participate!!  The group is beginning to attract interest and has had some special guests stop by to practice with them (thank you Barbara Oberding).  The goal is for participants to build their phrase vocabulary and increase fluency.  If interested in joining, an inter- mediate/advanced knowledge of spoken German and/or a strong willingness to learn are required. The workshop employs several mediums as sources for discussion including, but not limited to: German books, podcasts, YouTube, and German language websites. The aim is to get a solid 2 hours of practice per session ideally, as the more time you put into practicing, the better your results!  Anyone interested in joining, just meet the group in the Grove on

Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM

or ask for them at the bar.

DIE SCHULTÜTE

E

THE KINDER CONE

I

t is September and in Germany, as in

many other countries, school begins. First graders especially, go to school with great expectations, as they proudly carry their

“Schultüte“(a large cone shaped container).  This tradition started in the 18th century in Jena, Dresden and Leipzig. At that time, parents created small, filled cones, with their child’s name on it and hung them on the “school cone tree.” A completed tree signaled the first day of school. Nowadays, the Schultüten are nicely decorated and filled with school supplies, candies and small presents.  The children carry their cones to school proudly, which makes their first day of school especially exciting.  Austria and the Czech Republic, as well as the German language schools in the U.S., have begun practicing this tradition. Barbara Oberding

Book Club

Our very own Member and esteemed Author, James Hockenberry, has volunteered to begin a

Book Club.

The first book,

“City of Women”

by David R Gillham, will be discussed on

Friday

evening

October 26th, at 7:30 PM

.

The book’s story takes place in 1943—the height of the Second World War. With the men away at the front,

Berlin has become a city of women. On the surface, Sigrid Schröder is the model German soldier’s wife: She goes to work every day, does as much with her rations as she can, and dutifully cares for her meddling mother-in-law.

But behind this façade is an entirely different Sigrid, a woman of passion who dreams of her former Jewish lover, now lost in the chaos of the war. But Sigrid is not the only one with secrets—she soon finds herself caught between what is right and what is wrong, and what falls somewhere in the shadows between the two . . . Please sign up at the bar if you are interested in joining the first meeting of the Book Club.

Bertha Benz and the Famous Road Trip

I

n 1885, Karl Benz invented the first Motorwagen, a three-wheeled vehicle with a gas-powered engine that he designed. The horseless carriage had a single cylinder with 2.5 horsepower and could reach 25 mpg.

The design was patented in 1886. Although Karl Benz was a talented engineer, he was a terrible marketer.

His wife Bertha, the investor in Karl’s Motorwagen, was well aware of the need to publicize the automo- bile as much as possible. Bertha planned a motor trip in August of 1888 to visit her mother in Pforzheim, about 56 miles away from the Benz home in Mann- heim. Bertha left Karl a letter, took her two teenage

sons, and pushed the Motorwagen out of the garage. Following roads meant for wagons, Bertha started on the first recorded road trip in a car. There were challenges. When a fuel line clogged, Bertha cleared it with her hairpin, brake pads were improvised with leather soles from a local shoemaker, a repair to the ignition was made with her garter, and fuel was purchased from a local pharmacy that sold ligroin. The Benz family arrived at Bertha’s parents’ home in less than 12 hours. Bertha sent Karl a telegram to say that they arrived safely, but news of the journey had already reached the press thanks to many eyewitness reports from people in the towns and villages that Bertha and the boys passed along the way. People were amazed by the automobile driven by a woman. Bertha Benz made history. In 2008, Germany created the Bertha Benz Memorial Route marking the round trip between Mannheim and Pforzheim following Bertha Benz’s pivotal place in industrial and motoring achievement.
