Supplementary Material 1. Glossary of the variables included in the present study.

DEMOGRAPHICS

Age Age calculated as the difference in decimal years between the date of inclusion in the study and the date of birth.

Sex Male/Female

Body mass index Calculated by dividing kilograms of body weight by height in square meters:

body mass index (BMI) = weight [kg]/ height [m2] = kg/m2) MEDICAL HISTORY

Charlson comorbidity index†

immunosuppression Neutropenia, solid / hematopoietic organ transplantation, onco-

haematological patients with active chemotherapy, HIV infection with CD4

<200 and pregnant women.

Smoking Yes/No/former smoker

TREATMENT AT HOME

Hydroxychloroquine Receiving treatment with hydroxychloroquine Azithromycin Receiving treatment with azithromycin Amoxicillin Receiving treatment with amoxicillin

Other Antipyretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs VITAL SIGNS AT EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ARRIVAL

Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure

Measured in mmHg of the patient on arrival to the ED. This value can be that obtained during triage or the first taken on initiating care.

Heart rate Central heart rate measured as beats per minute of the patient on arrival to the ED. This value can be that obtained during triage or the first taken on initiating care.

Respiratory rate Respiratory rate measured as beats per minute of the patient on arrival to the ED. This value can be that obtained during triage or the first taken on initiating care.

Room air pulsioxymetry Oxygen saturation expressed as percentage obtained by capillary

pulsioxymetry on arrival to the ED. This value can be that obtained during triage or the first taken on initiating care.

Temperature Temperature of the patient on arrival to the ED measured in degrees celsius.

This value can be that obtained during triage or the first taken on initiating care

CHEST RADIOGRAPHY (X-RAY)

Describes whether the patient shows the following in a chest X-ray:mild unilobar or multilobar alveolar pneumonia (radiological opacities < 50%

pulmonary area).

Chest radiography reported by a board certified radiologist BLOOD TESTS AT EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ARRIVAL

Lymphocyte cells/ml

(2)

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)

In ml/min/1,73m²by CKD-EPI formula*

Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT)

In mg/dl

Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT)

In mg/dl

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) In mg/dl

D-dimer In ng/ml

T-hs-troponin in ng/L

DISPOSITION

Revisit at ED Patient discharged directly home from the ED without hospital admission and revisit to the emergency department within 30 days after discharge Hospital admission Patient transferred to an in-hospital ward after ED management within 30

days after discharge from the ED

The possibility to discharge eligible COVID-19 patients from the ED and provide adequate care at home may be an effective strategy to reduce the need for COVID-19-dedi- cated

One of the reasons for the reduction of admissions is probably the fear of contagion, accentuated by the alarmistic coverage of the pandemic by the media, especially among patients

Outcome: Potential ED/HH care model savings The ED/HH model provided potential savings per mild COVID-19 pneumonia patient, not requiring hospital admission (102 patients)..
