Let and make

When let and make are followed by an object and another verb, the second verb is not preceded by to.

 One of them let me play with his binoculars!

In the following sentences, make has a different meaning.

 It might make Bridget laugh. (make = cause)

 It makes me want to cry. (make = cause)

 They made me work until 10 o'clock at night. (make = force)

A. Complete these sentences with let or make. Be careful to choose the right tense.

1. They didn't ________ _ ____ me work late – I agreed to do it.

Allow, permit, force, order

The following verbs mean more or less the same as let or make, but you have to use them differently.

 One of them let me play with his binoculars!

 One of them allowed me to play with his binoculars!

 One of them permitted me to play with his binoculars!

In the following sentences, make has different meanings.

 They made me work until 10 o'clock at night.

 They forced me to work until 10 o'clock at night.

 They ordered me to work until 10 o'clock at night.

NOTE:

You cannot use let in the passive.

If you want to express the same idea, you must use allow or permit.

 I was allowed / permitted to play with the binoculars.

NOT: I was let to play with the binoculars.

You CAN use make in the passive, if make means force.

 I was made to work until 10 o'clock at night.
