The Institut national d’histoire de l’art has partnered with the Terra Foundation for American Art to offer a one-year postdoctoral residential fellowship at the INHA. In addition, the fellow will benefit from a travel allowance.

The recipient’s objective will be to perform original research on the art of the United States prior to 1980 in view of publishing an article in the year following the end of the fellowship.

Visual arts that are eligible for the Terra Foundation fellowship include all visual art categories except architecture and commercial film/animation.

Within the framework of the recipient’s research trip, the INHA will encourage the dissemination of the recipient’s research in the United States.

Grant terms:

• The fellow will be welcomed at the INHA and have access to the institute’s facilities and library from September 1, 2019 to August 31, 2020

• Health insurance, visa costs, and housing in France are the fellow’s responsibility

• Funding, paid in euros, includes an annual grant worth 26,000 USD and a travel allowance worth 8,500 USD

Application process and deadline:

Applications must be submitted online by January 20, 2020.

Application materials:

• Résumé

• Research proposal (5000 characters)

• Travel plan

• Rapport de thèse, for candidates who defended their doctoral thesis in France

• Letter of recommendation concerning the postdoctoral research proposal (for candidates who defended their doctoral thesis in France)

or

• Two letters of recommendation concerning the thesis and the postdoctoral research proposal (for candidates who defended their thesis outside France)

Eligibility:

• The candidate should hold a PhD at the time of application

• The candidate should have successfully defended his or her thesis (in French or English) in a Francophone university less than 5 years prior to the application deadline

• The thesis subject must focus, totally or partially, on the history of art of the United States before 1980

• All nationalities, with the exception of the United States are eligible to apply.

• The grant may not be combined with other funding and can only be attributed to a PhD without institutional affiliation. The grant should not be accepted if recruitment for a lecturer position or public sector appointment is ongoing.

Selection process:

The recipient will be chosen by a jury consisting of the Director General of the INHA, the Director of the Studies and Research Department, the Director of the Library and Documentation Depart- ment, a scientific advisor, and an expert of American art history.

Results announcement:

The award will be announced in May 2020.
