Abstract

Sustainable recycling of homogeneous catalysts is a continuing challenge in the fine and specialty chemicals industry. In this context, product isolation and innovative pro- cessing concepts in alternative reaction media play an indispensible role, bringing them also into the focus of academic research. In this thesis the concept of catalyst recycling and product isolation in three-phase microemulsions by phase separation as proposed by Schomäcker and Strey et al. was adapted to the synthesis of Boscalid

®

. For its initial step, a Suzuki coupling in which the polar phase is used for the removal of undesirable byproducts that deactivate the catalyst, the scope and limits of microemulsion sys- tems with selected pure, technical grade and sugar based surfactants were investigated regarding binary and ternary phase behavior as well as recycling of the catalyst con- taining microemulsion phase. To set up the three-phase state the reactants' impact on the phase behavior of non-ionic microemulsions was studied systematically revealing a synergetic addition of their individual effects. Using this reactant based phase behavior the composition of the system was chosen in such an extent that the three-phase state is generated in the course of the reaction allowing fast subsequent phase separation.

To use the oil excess phase containing the product without intermediate purification in the following stages, atom emission spectroscopy measurements were performed, which prove no measurable leaching of the catalyst into this phase. In addition, the accu- mulation of the catalyst complex at the internal inteface was validated by small angle neutron scattering experiments. Concerning the catalyst extraction into the water ex- cess phase, HPLC-UV/Vis studies of strongly and weakly structured systems show that efficient, long-chain surfactants are required to keep more than 90% of the free water- soluble ligand in the microemulsion phase. To enable the use of cost-efficient, technical grade surfactants for this purpose, extraction phenomena had to be eliminated. These investigations led to an extension of the original concept: The oil excess phase, which still contains monomerically dissolved surfactant molecules after isolation of the final product is led back into the first reaction vessel for a further cycle of Suzuki coupling without intermediate solvent treatment procedures. It was possible to reuse the reac- tive microemulsion phase in five consecutive reaction cycles at constant temperature.

Finally, using the influence of the reactants on the phase behavior the three-phase state

of hydrophilic sugar surfactant systems could be shifted to the reaction temperature

without the addition of co-surfactants; thereby allowing more ecologically friendly and

simple reaction media.

Kurzzusammenfassung

In diesem Zusammenhang
