https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLJsXnTIS6Q The career of an entomologist.

We are learning:

What an entomologist studies and how this is important.

How insects can be used to solve murder cases How to identify insects using a key

Using the information sheet, identify the different insects which have been found on  the corpses.

Explain how an entomologist can use this information to estimate the time of death of  a person.

Malaria and the mosquito.

We are learning:

To describe the life cycle of a mosquito and the malaria parasite Plasmodium To explain how malaria is spread from mosquito to human.

To interpret data from graphs showing the deaths caused by malaria.

Life cycle of the malaria parasite.

The life cycle of malaria parasites. A mosquito causes an infection by a bite. First,  sporozoites enter the dermis, where they migrate to enter the bloodstream. They  specifically arrest in the liver to infect liver cells, where they multiply into merozoites,  which return to the bloodstream. Then, the merozoites infect red blood cells, where they  develop into ring forms, trophozoites and schizonts that in turn produce further  merozoites. Sexual forms are also produced, which, if taken up by a mosquito, will infect  the insect and continue the life cycle

Task 1.

Using the data in the graph, describe the trend of deaths caused by malaria.

Give at least 2 reasons why you think this trend may have occurred.

How can we minimise the chance of contracting malaria?
